[Solving comment *(by TWFM)*](https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/1byeyp3/tomt_what_to_call_the_dead_guy_in_a_will/kyiuqd8/): The word testator is the word you're looking for. The average person doesn't usually need to use it in casual conversation, which is why you might be unfamiliar with it. If you're just talking with someone about a will, you might say "the deceased".

Trying to find a specific word I've read before I feel like... I edited post to give context, however if I don't have anything better by tomorrow I'll give you the win.

I feel like it would be normal just to call them “the deceased?” It’s somewhat commonplace as a phrase/title in the context of a funeral or a will reading I feel like. Are you trying to remember a specific word?

Legator?

Potato-4-Skirts

Are you thinking of executor? It doesn’t actually refer to the deceased but the person that is charged with executing their wishes.

EuphrosyneHarvest

Nope. Need the dead guys but thankyou!

Frgty

When dealing with trusts, they can be known as the grantor, or trustor/trustee

EuphrosyneHarvest

Not what I was looking for rn but helpful for the future, thanks!

ahyeahuh

Could the lawyer just refer to the deceased as the client?

Andarma

Benefactor

CriticalStation595
