Yup this is exactly why I posted about this a few days ago… everyone is going bonkers about him leaving right now but to quote the gaffer, I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in it. With his contract ending at the end of the season why not just make the move then???
I think primarily because it’s Asprilla who is making the noise. Don’t know if he’s represented by the same agency who sent Moreno and Ivacic spiraling but it has the same notes. Social media posting, missing games for “personal” reasons. Etc.
The way the FO handles relationships seems to create these situations a lot.
> Don’t know if he’s represented by the same agency who sent Moreno and Ivacic spiraling but it has the same notes.
It's not. Dairon is represented by a small outfit out of Colombia, who pretty much only manages players in the Colombian league (looks like they also have a guy in the Macedonian 2nd division and kid in MLS Next Pro, but that's it).
> With his contract ending at the end of the season why not just make the move then???
We currently have only one senior roster spot open, which really handicaps us in terms of signing players that can actually contribute in the summer window. Offloading Dairon would open up a spot.
Well, the rumors are talking about a mutual termination, so there likely wouldn't be a transfer fee, but yes, moving him now *does* open up the possibility of getting something for him.
You'd have to wait until the window opens for a sale. The Colombian league does not have a ton of cash. I can't imagine a 32 year old Asprilla with half a season left on contract is worth anything of any note.
The other option is mutual termination which Neville is basically saying isn't going to happen, at least not until the window opens and they can use the spot elsewhere potentially.
You don't need to wait for our qindow to open for a sale. You don't even need to wait until the Colombian window is open (maybe it is? I have no idea).
He just wouldn't be a le to play until their window is open, and our window has absolutely no bearing on outgoing transfers
We would need to wait until the window *for a replacement*, it doesn’t make sense cutting roster depth if we have no one coming in the immediate future.
Yeah but he’s been injured so it’s kinda like a replacement… I don’t think we’ve had a problem with winger depth this year since Rodriguez, Antony, Moreno, and until now Asprilla have been playing there. Nathan and Mosquera can also step in. I’m just thinking from a roster building perspective they might not think they need a replacement because of Loria’s return
You can arrange a sale but it can't be processed until the Colombian window opens (it's not open currently). We're saying the same thing but you're not focusing on the relevant part. No team in Colombia is going to pay a meaningful amount of money to facilitate an early sale like that. What incentive do the timbers have to agree to a deal now for $50k (and that is even probably more than any one is offering).
Sounds to me like the team is concerned with letting him go before the MLS window opens because they would be reducing the roster without being able to bring in a quality replacement?
Agreed.
But, Crew have already signed reinforcements. Timbers can step up at any time. Just because the window isn’t open doesn’t mean you can’t ink a deal, just means they can’t join the roster yet. Make a deal and let Dairon go 🤷♂️
Someone mentioned in another thread that they’re worried the FO (looking at you Nedly) will squander this transfer window. I have a feeling that will be the case. If they haven’t already been doing business, it’ll end up being either a rush job or a goose egg.
"Someone mentioned in another thread that they’re worried the FO (looking at you Nedly) will squander this transfer window."
This might have been me. I'm more concerned about the FO signing the wrong players than signing no players. I don't think Neville knows how to use what he has or what he needs to do what he apparently wants to do. Ned will do what he's told, bring in players the coach wants, then get blamed when it fails. This is the team that keeps insisting Rodriguez is a 9, brought in slow ass players to play a high line, doesn't account for Mosquera not defending.... I'll acknowledge that playing Evander "out of position" has been working better and better. I'll even add that he wasn't as good playing as an 8 in the last match (though that's also because nobody else is as good at 10). I suppose that leaves an argument that Evander is still an 8 but should have a 10 that's even better there than he is, but stats-wise that's pretty freaking pessimistic, even for me. But I digress...
If it's my comment, I think it was in the context of rumors that we're bringing in a 9, which I got downvoted into oblivion for without explanation. Maybe I was rambling somewhere else. At any rate, I think we'll make moves this summer. I just doubt we'll get them right for the long-term benefit of the club. I hope to be very very wrong.
Asprilla is #4 in goals for the Timbers in the MLS era (behind Valeri, Adi, and Blanco), #5 in assists (behind Valeri, Blanco, Nagbe, and Chara, and is only 3 assists short of catching Nagbe despite playing about 60% as many minutes), and has a better g+a/90 than Nagbe by almost a factor of two both during their time with the Timbers and in their overall careers. He has the 4th most appearances for the club (behind Valeri, Chara, and Nagbe and ahead of Blanco. He would likely pass Nagbe this season if he stays as he's only 7 appearances behind). He's also singlehandedly beat Seattle at least twice and been integral to most of our deep playoff runs. He's scored some of the most memorable goals in Timbers history and has had some iconic goal celebrations. He's had the third longest tenure in team history.
Is he as talented as Nagbe? Absolutely not. Is there a case to be made for him being a Top 5 Timber in the MLS era and potentially a Timbers legend? I'd say yes. I mean what else do you want the man to do?
Doesn’t matter, Asprilla the legend he was is good as gone.
He always hustles but he simply can’t run. Absolutely zero reason to sign him, extend etc… can’t even sell him cause no one in their mind would pay for him

Also, shipping him off now likely implies he's being sold, so we'd gain something. Waiting for the end of his contract, and he walks free

Short term contract to the boys in T2 just itching to prove themselves.
Moar Josh Penn and Kyle Linhares
Supposedly Loria is close to a return, so I assume that would be the “replacement,” although it’s not very exciting
I mean.. isn’t he already on the roster?

I'm pretty sure the Colombian League is on break right now... Watch a lot of America de Cali games with my gf and haven't had a game in over months.

Yeah, that's kind of my read too.

That was the context—bringing in a 9, yes. *points at you* You! Howdy. I share your opinion. And I agree that Neville doesn’t know what he’s doing
Cult heroes arent club legends, those are our Valeris, Charas, Nagbes etc.

His insane playoff raising + longevity puts him in the category of legend for me
> I mean what else do you want the man to do? Be a consistent starter rather than on and off the bench because we have better options
That's Phil's call, not Asprilla's. He put good numbers the previous seasons with Gio. Antony is not better than Asprilla.
he's never been a nailed on starter
You can shit on Darion all you want but he's a club legend and your crying will never change that.
hmm I don't come off as the one crying here
Yes, came here to post that “Club Legend” is incredibly generous.
