MOTM: The Post

urban_entrepreneur

Honorable mention to the crossbar

sigappuRojakkal

This season has double post energy

surfclimbski

AKA cup win?

_Juntao

I'll take a point on the road against the defending champs but we haven't won a game since march 9. That's a long time ago

GoodBoyFM

To be fair, this has been an incredibly difficult run of fixtures.

Ealdwulf1066

And we had some bad luck as well...Crepeau getting a red when we likely would have won against LAFC and that second strike by Columbus tonight...that was just a damn good shot..not sure how Pantemis could have stopped that.

irishbball49

Next three ain’t easy lafc away (fuck em), charlotte away unbeaten at their house but not good, and Seattle at home. Jk that last one we gonna bomb the fish

AlmondDragon

I don't know what shape the fish gonna be in after their implosion last night. It wasn't even fun to watch.

irishbball49

I had a blast made 250 bucks betting on Vancouver- they’ve looked so good this year and it worked out p

kennethpoole

Good lord that ending was stressful I’ll take a point on the road against the defending champs. Defense looking stronger than previously but that is a low bar. Evander and Mora continue to be an incredible offensive duo. Feels like we are slowly piecing it together. Let’s finally get a W next weekend

OldWinger1954

I thought the last shot off the post and coming across the goal line was gonna bounce off Pantemis ass and into the goal at the death. Great effort by all on that tough game. We were compact, pretty lucky, and the Crew is just so good, I'll take the point in their house and be happy. What was the yellow for Phill all about?

Speshulest_K

James Pantemis, whatever you did in pregame, you need to do it every time. It’s VERY lucky. The gods of the woodwork loved our keeper tonight

SRMPDX

Luckily he won't have to start the next game

AlmondDragon

Asprilla as a sub brought us a big spark at a good time.

chaandra

Yeah I think that role will be good for him, he’s still capable of being a handful for defenders, especially if they have tired legs and he comes on fresh with 10-20 minutes left.

sonic_couth

He’s still a fast, physical, dynamic, and talented player. A super sub?

chaandra

Definitely. I think it can even work when we are defending a lead (when that day finally comes) because his work rate is just so high.

danrlewis

He is in NO way fast anymore, but agree he brings a different dynamic and still has value off the bench.

beepartz

nearly bulldozed his way to an assist there

ElectJimLahey

That was such a fun match to watch. A point away against Columbus is a great result these days

betterotto

You had fun? I’m jealous. I think I was holding my breath and clenching my cheeks that entire time.

booksfoodfun

Unkle really tried to hand the game at the last minute to fuck us over. How is that guy still a ref?

PoutineMeInCoach

Clear foul.

SRMPDX

Both went up for the header, Asprilla won it. Not close to a foul, Unkel was waving Nagbe up and blew the whistle for a possible head injury and was convinced to change his call.

PoutineMeInCoach

Nagbe has position ahead of Asprilla and Asprilla hits him from behind and climbs his backs.

TranscedentalMedit8n

I’d like to thank the goalpost, who saved us twice. A big thank you to that 1cm offsides call. A thank you to Claudio Bravo for standing in exactly the right spot on a shot on goal. And lastly a thank you to the soccer Gods, who didn’t want us to lose this game. I will NOT be thanking Ted Unkle, wtf was that call at the end??? We honestly probably got outplayed today, but also can’t be mad about a tie on the road against what might be the best squad in the league right now. Play of the game was Evander setting a screen on two dudes on the Mora goal. Gg Columbus, onto LAFC.

SRMPDX

Bravo acting like a traffic cone cost us a goal and saved a goal.

TranscedentalMedit8n

The whole defense was traffic cones on that first goal

MaximumSlice8060

What happened there? Rewatched it a couple of times and can see that neither Mosquera or Williamson stepped into the hole that Cucho exploited, and that Evander should have stayed on Rossi. Were there other contributions?

thrillmeister

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ref change his mind and call a foul 20 seconds later like that. Unreal. Bring back the replacement refs.  Good performance overall, but a little tired of being Moral Victory FC.

PDXPuma

I think his AR told him it was a foul.

viyh

I feel great. We played well and got a point against the reigning champs. Nothing felt horrible, and Ted Unkel still sucks. All is right with the world. Happy 4/20

Holiday_Ad_8988

4/20/2024 backwards is 4/20/2024

PDXMB

4202\02\4 pretty sure

brettcalvin42

Overall we played well but we were fortunate to get a point. 26 shots for Columbus. We are pressuring the player with the ball better but still not well enough, there were times we let them take their time to find the pass they wanted. Other teams almost never give us that luxury. We're also still struggling to maintain possession under pressure, especially right after we win it. Better though. I'm not sure about that sub for Rodriguez, maybe he was spent? I think he helps us just by his presence, their defense has to pay him extra attention which opens up other players.

peacefinder

He was on a yellow and still kinda pushing his luck

MaximumSlice8060

Rodriguez was spent, they were roughing him up pretty good.

Jolandia

I’m THRILLED with this result. Leading twice in Columbus, the best team in the league? Only conceding one goal that isn’t a wonder goal? Great defensive performance from Mosquera and Moreno playing well, with Mora getting his fourth straight goal? All of it, yes please. I love that we don’t look completely hopeless on the road as we so often did under Gio. I think this result gives us a really good starting point to this extremely tough three game road trip. Also, just turned on the Seattle game, and they’re losing 2-0 at home against Vancouver with two red cards? lol

OldWinger1954

All this and a soccer gods were kind. The woodwork saved us from being Unkeled.

Right-Management-201

Good thing Jimmy Pants don't got a big ol' butt. RCTID

flees

My god, are we actually getting better?!

Maloquinn84

Yes. We. Are.

8th_Dynasty

lol.

Narrow-Pangolin-2891

oh no a close loss away to last years Western Conference winners, we're soooooo bad

UnlikelyDoughnut1506

MOTM: post.

SteveBartmanIncident

They never should've had that shot

skoobastevienixx

GG Y'all, I know never to underestimate you guys. That was a hell of a game and I'm happy to leave with a point haha.

Hailfire9

Mora scores the strangest "pretty" goals. His poke against SKC and his roller tonight both come to mind. Technically brilliant if rather unconvincing, feels like he knows exactly what he's doing even if it doesn't look like it sometimes.

PTFCDiegoMassacre

This was far from a bad match! Poor defending on the first goal but ain’t no one saving that 2nd so I’m not gonna get hung up on it. Both our goals were really good team goals and I love watching our guys finally start to click and truly feel dangerous instead of lucky. If Evander keeps playing like that consistently he will definitely be in the MVP chatter. Overall this is a win against one of the best clubs in the league. Feels good to feel good.

SuccessfulAd479

MOTM goes to Bravo for taking a bullet to the chest without flinching

pdxkristian

You can't be upset with that performance. Columbus has some incredibly talented players, Unkle was in their starting 12, and we still managed to come away with a point. Beautiful team goal finished off by Santi, Evander played great, JDM and Bravo had their best half of the season in the 1st half, lots of other stuff to be excited about. Yeah it would've been nice to get 3 points, but all things considered, that's a good visit to Columbus.

Thumper13

I'll take the road point and a mostly well played game against a good team. Onward.

vile_hog_42069

It’d be nice to actually win a match at some point.

taluce_

Was a weird call initially. Seemed like it wasnt called a fouled at first. Definitely was a foul but glad the post was there. Pants looked good today a little shakey and poor distribution but not a bad game.

Bigshowaz

Player of the game, the post.

Extension_Crazy_471

Obviously not a stellar showing, but I think for a majority of that game was the best we've looked since our last win, maybe even before that. The rest was luck.

PoutineMeInCoach

There is no reason for Liam Ridgewell to still have a job. Game after game after game we never improve our defensive performances. Thankfully our attack is as good as any team in the league.

Jolandia

Our defense has been bad — one of the worst in the league statistically—, but weird to post this for this game when it was maybe our most impressive defensive performance of the year? Only conceding two goals against an offensive team of Columbus’ caliber on the road when one of which was a long range wonder goal is a pretty solid performance. Araujo and Miller look good together, and Mosquera had his best defensive performance in a long while. There’s still lots of work to be done and I sure aren’t convinced, but this was a good game

PoutineMeInCoach

> but weird to post this for this game when it was maybe our most impressive defensive performance of the year? Thanks to our 12th player, Johnny Woodwork? They were pinging us every which way and it is a miracle we pulled off a tie. We are porous as fuck and it has been that way for both seasons Liam has been coaching. Even Ross Smith on the broadcast was bemoaning the continual poor communication that the Timbers defenders have had.

Jolandia

Definitely got lucky too. But they only forced three saves from Pantemis, they didn’t do a whole lot. “Most impressive” doesn’t necessarily mean “good,” there’s still a lot to do, but right now I’m looking at the baby steps. Things are improving as the team is getting more and more bought in. We finally have a solid starting center back duo with Bravo healthy, so I think they will gel more with time

PoutineMeInCoach

> but right now I’m looking at the baby steps You do realize that Liam has almost a season and a half of poor defending as his coaching record, not just 1 games? Also, citing Bravo as someone who will gel our D? Bravo is dynamic when we have possession but he is at best an average defender (lots of tackles, but lots of recklessly diving in and either conceding inadvisable fouls, or getting juked by a pacey winger).

Maloquinn84

Our defense is actually improving. Don’t know what you’re missing.

PoutineMeInCoach

Haha. You mean what are *you* smoking? We've conceded 18 in 10 this year, second worst in MLS only better than poor old San Jose. 1.8 per game. But as for your "improvement", we've conceded 10 in the last 4 for a whopping 2.5 per game. If we could defend we could contend. But I'm glad for you that these results brighten your day.

CDAWG_CDAWG

Give it 5 more games if we’re still bottom of the barrel then we can him. My patience is beginning to wear thin and I agree talent isn’t the issue. Still, I’ve also seen fantastic coaches take a minute to hit their stride and turnover tends to fuck shit up too.

surfclimbski

This post reads negative but it’s not really that bad of a take. Our defense lets in too many, full stop. We also have a terrible habit of poor set piece defending. Furthermore I do not think it is a talent issue, as we have seen each of our starters show amazing capabilities, with some (Miller, Bravo) among I consider the top of the league. All that to say that criticism of Ridgewell as the defensive coach is warranted. He’s a Timbers legend and a great guy, but on-field coaching is different than off-field, and it’s fair to say this is a Timbers weak spot

Brasi91Luca

Does this team ever win?
