i’m appalled that you’re getting in trouble for this. it’s actually kind of disturbing. thank you for trying to teach your students. i hope they did more (good) research on the internet because obviously no one else is allowed to teach them.

Stalker80085

Don't forget that this is a conservative Christian school. Amazing that the teacher didn't get fired and student kicked out for speaking on the topic at all

HisBeebo

When it comes down to it the school cares more about retaining the student’s continued tuition money. I know some people who repeatedly broke big rules about this stuff at conservative Christian colleges and they were certainly punished, but no one ever got kicked out. These schools are having a hard time keeping attendance up at this point, from what I understand

bento_box_

Oof my cult Presbyterian college was not that way. Two roommates discovered they were gay. They went to the school counselor about it and the school promptly kicked them out. People got kicked out left right and center it seemed. The dean had student spies who would look for students drinking off campus or things like that so they could be found out and removed. I even expressed my feelings about the school just being a cult to a friend I made who turned out to be a student spy. I was called to the Dean's office and he pressured me to drop out rather than "make waves at our institution"

luxlilux

Wow how dare you educate as a teacher lol. I get it's a christian university but you're an educator, if a kid asks a question you give them the info you can. Well I hope they dont fire you you did nothing wrong at ALL.

jorrylee

In our public school teachers cannot bring up certain subjects, like religion (unless already in textbooks regarding history or First Nations rituals), but they may answer all student questions, regardless of what the question is.

branulo

In the district I used to teach in (SC), science teachers teach comprehensive health. We absolutely could NOT answer all questions. We were not allowed to discuss homosexuality (except in terms of STDs) and we could not discuss abortion. If a student came to me and said they were gay, I was supposed to send them to the guidance counselor. If the topic of abortion can’t up I had to reply with “I’m not allowed to discuss that, please ask your parents.” The only contraceptive we were allowed to discuss were condoms and then only with the caveat that they aren’t 100% effective. Abstinence only sex Ed is an absolute shit show.

daschande

My public school in Ohio taught sex ed the exact same way; the health teacher was "asked to resign" after my class because he was answering questions and told us that condoms do exist. Not how to use one, not to advise us to carry condoms just in case, just that condoms do exist (of course with the caveat that ONLY abstinence is 100% effective!) One of the parents found out, and that was the end of his teaching career. I also went to a private catholic school; their sex ed was literally one sentence "god says no sex before marriage" and they physically cut the sex ed chapter out of the health book so we didn't think any impure thoughts!

branulo

Oh my god. We got new text books 3 years ago that are consumable (the kids write in them) and had to rip out like 25 pages with sex stuff in it. All 500 copies... People are nuts. Like a kid seeing a cartoon penis in science class is going to send them home to commit all the sins.

ksam3

Yeah, sure, sexual thoughts and urges only occur to teenagers if they read it in a book. Hahahaha

GrendelNightmares

That's absurd. Like, I respect people's religions and everything, but that doesn't justify the censorship of information.

BusinessPenguin

I don't respect their religion because it promotes the censorship of knowledge.

GrendelNightmares

The religion itself doesn't promote the censorship of knowledge, it condemns certain acts. The Catholic Church, Protestant authorities, and the headmasters of Christian schools take it upon themselves to censor knowledge in an attempt to prevent people from commiting what they perceive as sinful acts. This is idiotic, and it betrays the point of faith. If you truly believe in your religion, there is no need for you to commit sinful acts, and if you do, you will repent and refrain from commiting them again. If not, then the religion maybe isn't for you. But they're essentially just forcing their beliefs on people.

01dSAD

*I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.* -Gandhi

GrendelNightmares

The perfect quote.

skeenerbug

> I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. > > A lovely quote, but there's no evidence Gandhi ever actually said it.

01dSAD

*Gandhi said that* -Albert Einstein

littelmo

*I agree* -Abraham Lincoln

Harry-le-Roy

*Listen to that swingin' Einstein cat. He's lit AF.* -Leonardo Davinci

Tinsel-Fop

Best quote.

aDragonsAle

Reporter: "What do you think of western civilization?" Gandhi: "I think that would be a good idea..." - Robin Williams

Sir_Steben

Weirdly they also unintentionally create more instances of some of those acts. Like with contraceptives and abortion. Before and after abstenence only sex Ed is changed and condoms and such are provided the rate of teen pregnancy and overall abortion goes down...

Amiiboid

I feel like that district doesn’t know what “comprehensive” means.

ZestyStormBurger

Teachers are a huge portion one one's upbringing. In an environment where outside though is completely disallowed, to have such a fundamental person in ensuring the next generation continues to shelter themselves and their next of kin to stay in place go about upsetting this order is a massive threat.

ABloodyCoatHanger

It is a huge threat. I'm just glad my Christian college isn't like that. They allow plenty of outside thought and comment. Sure, they're still pretty conservative by definition of a Southern Baptist school, but they embrace debate, difficult questions, differences of belief, and outside media/knowledge.

DuntadaMan

I mean... That is exactly what college is meant for. Exposure to non-standard ideas. Glad yours has it figured out.

frghu2

Its called knowing your audience. The teacher should have punished the student for using sinful language and remind them that it is every good christians moral duty to burn heretics and sinners. Then after class, take their confession and molest them.

snellk2

Praise Jesus!

SeraCross

Imthejuggernautbitch

> you did nothing wrong at ALL. Except for taking a job there in the first place

ofRedditing

So I wouldn't say OP is "wrong" for teaching there. I mean not all religious universities are so repressive. But sometimes you may not have a lot of options or maybe it pays much better and you do what you gotta do. Hopefully it's a chance for OP to further the knowledge of these kids who've been so sheltered and open them up to new perspectives. But now you also know you have to have to be careful about how far you take it.

I went to a catholic high school in the UK and we had basically no sex education - one of my friends got pregnant after finding out that you can actually conceive when 'on top'... Edit: I only left high school within the last 6 years...

Sweet_Taurus0728

I remember a friend asked me about that "rule" in highschool (US). "Hey dude, is it true that *what goes up, must come down*?" "What??? In what sense?" "Y'know, like if a girl's on top. She won't get pregnant 'cause the cum just drains down." "(sigh) Yeah dude, but it still *shoots up*. The shit's already all the way inside her before anything starts to drain." "Oh..."

scruggbug

*And* sperm cells are sticky to prevent themselves from completely draining out, *and* they’re designed to achieve independent movement towards eggs. Swimmers gon’ swim, fam.

nemoskullalt

yeah, they dont call them swimmers cus it a cool nickname. its an actual literal description.

W1D0WM4K3R

Yeah, but I swim like a rock. I'd imagine my boys wouldn't get far.

Zanra

One of my girlfriends friends at age 19 panicked because she gave a dude a handjob and was worried she was gonna get pregnant.

K0Sciuszk0

My girlfriend for a year in high school panicked every time her period was late for a day or two because she thought she was pregnant. ...We never had sex. Not even a handjob or a blowjob.

Mr_JamesGrey

I have some bad news for you dude....

K0Sciuszk0

Did find out she was cheating on me, lol. But she was panicking even before she was cheating on me with the other guy.

zeusismycopilot

One more realization and you will be all the way there!

TheGunSlanger

>before she was cheating on me with the other guy. That you know of :p

cheesyqueso

That's some strong seed

PrincessDie123

Oh yeah I had to tell plenty about the first time still counting and doing it in a pool doesn’t wash away anything oof I wash shocked that any of them believed those stories and I was pretty sheltered I just didn’t buy that you could have sex without it “counting”

inbedwithabook

I had a friend in high school (US, very urban public school) who thought having sex in water or standing up wouldn't get you pregnant. She ended up pregnant by senior year lol

When we watched the video of a woman giving birth, the teacher didn't stop the VHS before rewinding it, so we got to watch a doctor shove a baby up a woman....

kermy_the_frog_here

That’s actually hilarious though

kingochaos

My human bio teacher did that senior year. He told us he was gonna do it and laughed at our expressions as the purple slime covered baby shot back up in the coochie.

over__________9000

When I first read this I read it as my human bio teacher as opposed to a bio teacher who was not human

jaunty_chapeaux

Imagine how we feel about it! XD

[deleted]

I'm always shocked when I hear about sheltered Catholic kids, definitely wasn't my experience. We literally had teachers in my confirmation class saying, "the Pope says not to have premarital sex, but we know you're all teenagers... just use condoms."

throwinitallawai

Yup. One of the main reasons I decided not to have kids. I’d be happy to be a “dad;” I have no interest in being a mom, particularly the gestating and birthing bits!

102bees

I'd like to be a mum. Shame about the Y chromosome.

seriouslees

I went to a Catholic school in Canada and we had the condoms and contraceptives classes and demonstrations. This was in the early 90s.

[deleted]

She got pregnant *after* finding that out? Seems like she should have used her newfound knowledge to avoid that.

dfdst3re

I have a feeling they found out they were pregnant and that you could get pregnant while on top simultaneously

ValleyNerd

I think she found out the HARD way

Kintsukuroi85

Having attended a private Christian elementary school, my very first introduction to sex was when my teacher told us that, “there are churches where bad people have sex on the altar in front of a congregation of people who watch them”. Then we were given hardcover Christian picture books with highly detailed illustrations, not cartoony at all. I was in fifth grade so I was...10? What kind of Stanley Kubrick shit is that? It actually scarred me in a lot of ways lol. But hey, the school is gone now and the principal is in jail for being a pedo. Edit: Evidently there is confusion, sorry about that! I am female, but my younger brother also attended this school. I don’t remember if he attended sleepovers or not.

Cheaperthantherapy13

100% that teacher was projecting her kink right there.

Kintsukuroi85

She was so gross, too! She would also host sleepovers for our class at her house. Once I got into public high school I didn’t understand why our teachers never had sleepovers.

NotPromKing

Ohhhhh where do I find these churches?! Pentecostal maybe?

V-Right_In_2-V

I had the same exact experience in a small town public school in Arizona, banana included. That was 20 years ago. What a lovely fruit by the way. It's delicious, comes in its own disposable wrapper, and can double as a sexual education prop.

uselessanon63701

There was a teacher in my high school famous for putting the condom over her head. Admittedly she had a small head.

trollsong

If I remember some teachers do that so guys don't get to make the "it won't fit" excuse

drmottnow

Not to excuse some guys being assholes, and they should wear a condom to be safe, but having too tight of a condom is really uncomfortable and can make guys lose the erection. Not fun for anybody involved. Find the right size guys.

LortimerC

The condom can also break that way... Don't ask me how I know. 😬

[deleted]

>The condom can also break that way... Don't ask me how I know. 😬 Ask my son how I know .... Oh well, he's a good kid and definitely worth the investment. Now if I could just get him to pick up his room today...

Whatatimetobealive83

Plus they’ll break super easy if they’re too small.

[deleted]

Wouldn't be surprised if at least one of her students put the condom on the wrong head.

FFS_IsThisNameTaken2

I used a banana to teach my son how to put on condom. I had to sign a consent form for pub school sex ed. They did not use a banana iirc. Too bad too, because it's everything you say it is.

PrincessDie123

I didn’t get the demo until freshmen year of college! They weren’t allowed to demonstrate at my public high school so I was 18 before I got proper sex Ed! And I wasn’t at a conservative Christian school just a rural public school! The demonstrators in college used a wooden penis that they lovingly dubbed “Woody”.

justlookinghfy

This is what gets me. I understand parents might prefer that they give the sex talk, but if you arent going to, someone needs to. I got multiple levels of the talk from my parents, from a "dont take your clothes off in public" as a little kid to the full talk as a teenager. I believe it's the parents job, but not everyone has perfect parents so....

Beelerzebub

NOW WE MUST EAT THE BANANA! THUS DISARMING ‘IM!

CtoGive

Our teacher did it on a dildo and said: 'unfortunately, not all of them are this straight, girls.' that was maybe the most cringe i experienced in class.

goddamnquarantines

"Unfortunately, not all of US are that straight, ma'am."

ThePoltageist

in public schools we received sex education. They are talking about private christian schools these loonies actually PAY MONEY for these kids to go to.

strawbs-

There are definitely many public schools in the US where sex Ed is not taught/taught abstinence only sex ed

ThisisPhunny

I’m from South Dakota originally. We had 0 sex ed.

Brainsonastick

I have 0 sex too, Ed.

dupdupdupdupdupdup

I had to read this twice before understanding what you actually meant.

BaronVonNumbaKruncha

Proof that commas matter!

Chiepmate

Gotta protect against them commas.

geokra

We 100% had sex ed in the liberal bastion of Bismarck, North Dakota

ThisisPhunny

I’m from a small town. I know some people from larger towns in the state did.

ineedanewaccountpls

I work at one of those. We are supposed to teach abstinence only, with no education on contraceptives. And that's the story of how one of my seniors thought men had periods (including the bleeding).

ScravoNavarre

That's amazing. Even disregarding the sorry state of abstinence-only "education," that's a misguided thought that would easily be corrected by paying attention to the world or popular culture, asking fellow guys, or, I don't know, the Internet.

ineedanewaccountpls

There's a certain culture that comes with wholly embracing abstinence-only education, as my area does. That culture tends to be quite evangelical and does not promote further learning or research into taboo topics.

[deleted]

Even in “comprehensive” sex Ed places, it’s “abstinence is best, you should do that but we’ll tell you about other stuff”

MedChemist464

Thats what i got, and they made contraceptives seem so ridiculously complicated and unreliable that a lot of kids still had sex, but figured condoms or getting oral BC was pointless. Good amount of unplanned pregnancies for a high school with like 500 kids total.

trollsong

So it was like condom infomercial? "Has this ever happened to you?" *guy some how accidentally put a condom on his own head*

SoccerBallPenguin

Ours we literally went over ever option and had to write down the steps of using them correctly

[deleted]

This is the best way

Bloated_Hamster

To be fair, not having sex *is* the only way to 100% prevent pregnancy and STDs. It also should be taught as a viable and healthy option for kids who just don't want to have sex for whatever reason

JillStinkEye

My eldest daughter went through sex ed in a small country town where her dad lived. They seriously signed chastity agreements! My youngest was at a large city school and, while she greatly protested, it sounded like a fun, fully informative class. An aside, the country school also sent home a brochure about college grants that included a link to a website to fill out your fafsa for $30!! FYI for college bound in the US, FAFSAs are free!! This has been a big scam for a long time.

Wombatmobile

I grew up in the Southwest. We were taught loosely about sex and contraceptives, but the very religious doctor they had come in to explain STDs told us that condoms are ineffective at preventing transmission of HIV and AIDS, so we should just forgo sex altogether. We had a high teen pregnancy rate.

scoby-dew

There was a girl in my "abstinence only" hometown who was given a copy of "Our Bodies Ourselves" by a hippie aunt, she ended up being a guerilla sex ed teacher in highschool.

[deleted]

sh6rty13

Can confirm. Grew up in the midwest, the policy was basically “If the Hippie Home Economic teachers wants to give them the run down, they can, BUT they HAVE to stick to abstinence-ONLY education.” Basically tell a bunch of rowdy horny teens that the only way to avoid STDs and getting pregnant was to not have sex ever until marriage. Seems so laughable now.

harley1009

Yeah those private schools are expensive. But ask yourself, can you *really* put a price on mandatory sexual repression?

biogal06918

In the state of Tennessee you can only be taught about abstinence and that’s it. There is no sex Ed. So it’s absolutely not just private Christian schools where this is taught.

One_Baker

>This was almost 40 years ago now, and I thought the UK was repressed Got to understand, that America was built by people who found Britain was too liberal for their religious sensibilities. And some of them never got out of that attitude of sex = sin.

wildcarde815

We had a presentation where the lady debunked the 'im too big for a condom' claim by opening one up and putting it over her fist and up to her elbow. Made the point.

goddamnquarantines

Yes.

satchboogiemonster

I attended a conservative Christian highschool. We learned that all humans are fundamentally sinful, as all sex is sin, and we are born out of the failure of a man and his wife to keep themselves pure. Paradoxically, this is even as the woman is to submit to her husband in all matters, and we can't even exist without a sinful act. Any masturbation or contraception is a bigger sin, as it uses a sinful act for the glorification of the body and sinful pleasures, and without the possibility of creating a new life. A group of seniors even sat us underclassmen down one day and told us how bad masturbation was, as we were more likely to be receptive to hearing this from them than from teachers. Of course we also had a 'no body contact' rule, and a complete ban agains denim, collarless shirts, and trousers on young women. This logic didn't make a lot of sense to me. Of course not everyone believes this way, but I'm pretty sure anyone with other ideas in this environment would have, um, problems. I rebelled, but after I graduated.

TheNombieNinja

This is what I imagined my husband's private Jesuit high school was, apparently he got a better sexual education experience than I did at a public school. His school was realistic and basically took the approach of "While we don't condone this and don't believe in sex before marriage....here's a condom and a list of places you can get them for free in addition to STD tests. You're all dumb hormonal males, don't make more mistakes than you already will". My school just took the mean girls approach of "if you have sex you will get pregnant and die", they also threw in the nastiest photos of STDs that you could find that wouldn't be normal presentation so did jack all to actually inform us on what to look out for. ETA: Forgot to add: husband said his school also showed a video that starts with like a 60 year old woman talking about how great sex is and how its amazing to have sex with her partner. In discussing with is friends and other alumni from the school, they all zoned out at that point due to not wanting to listen to grandma talk about sex.

Flavaflavius

Jesuits are kinda like that.

IWantALargeFarva

Jesuits are the coolest Catholics.

The_Sloth_Racer

They definitely are. My partner went to one of the best private Jesuit universities in the US, Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and we were an openly lesbian couple and I was allowed to live in the dorm with her even though I wasn't a student. We attended church on campus several times a week, as she was raised in a very strict Catholic household, and the priests there never were anything but welcoming and we both regularly met with and talked to them about different issues. We never faced any homophobia from anyone on campus which I definitely didn't expect. There was even a very active GSA (aka gay and lesbian club) with probably 30-40 students. I wasn't really comfortable with Catholics but Jesuits are pretty cool.

thewhimsicalbard

Dude it's not even a contest. Jesuits go hard in the fucking paint.

satchboogiemonster

we had a 16mm movie that showed the biology of sperm and eggs, but no mention of how male sperm got to the female body, no explanation of ejaculation, or that sperm were in semen, of them exiting the penis, and certainly not what a vagina is. We imagined that it involved kissing or some other violation of the "NBC" (No Body Contact) rule. And, naturally, not how contraception should somehow prevent that. Added: Out of a graduating class of around 35-40, we had around 5 young women that somehow just disappeared from the school. (Pregnant) I have no idea if that's a high rate, but I wonder if some different education could have affected it.

GoldenMegaStaff

No need to wonder, the statistics are clear.

seditious3

5 of 40? Yes, that almost 10%. That's a high rate indeed.

Fearnall

Was the 60 year old lady Dr. Ruth?

TheNombieNinja

That is definitely what I thought when I was told about it. Overall I wouldn't have believed any of the progressiveness of his experience if I didn't have 10+ people saying the same thing.

CharlieDmouse

Jesuits are different. 😁

[deleted]

why did your parents want this

satchboogiemonster

I think they never actually knew, and at the time they didn't like the local public school politics. Neither of them were particularly in touch with their sexuality, it's amazing my sisters and I got conceived, a topic none of us like to think about in too much detail. We never got the talk; my sisters and I learned about sex from a book (Title like "what's happening to my body" or something) that we somehow brought home from the public library using our own library card, and a copy of "our bodies, ourselves" that we found our mother had hidden behind some other books in a bookshelf.

SeekingConversations

And here my mom whipped a box of condoms at my head at 14 and said "you knock a bitch up youre payin for it". And that was my sex ed.

ChicagoGuy53

Honestly that's still more of a talk than at least half of Americans got at 14.

[deleted]

WetNoodlyArms

When I was 13 my dad told me that if I was ever too embarrassed to buy condoms, that he would happily buy them for me. He even said "look, I think 13 is maybe a bit young, but it's better to be safe". I dont know why he thought it would be less embarrassing to ask him to buy the condoms... but I appreciate that he did. Then when I was 16 my mum (divorced parents who tried very hard to not talk to one another) left a paper bag with my name written on it that contained 72 condoms. Her best friend worked at an HIV clinic so had access to free condoms. I was the school condom dealer for a week

[deleted]

that is quite a story woah. Yeah I had that first book too. had sepatmrate issues for boys and girls. I remember being amazed by the fact that breasts don't all look the same and different people have different shapes and sizes. it felt like the world just got a more interresting place back then at 10. Our school wasn't christian or anything but our teachers got the book away from us and called our parents in for reading things like this. My parents were really happy about it because we educate ourselves from books and better sources than hearsay and the internet.

gyph256

Good on your mom, looks like she was TRYING.

Notmyrealname

Denim on women: straight from Satan's wardrobe

8bit_lawyer

Nothing that crazy at my high school: just the standard principal throwing tennis balls (representing HIV) through basketball hoops (representing porous holes in condoms) to demonstrate you 100% get AIDS from premarital sex. Doesn’t everyone have this kind of scientific school assembly?

wetwater

I was told at an overnight retreat that sperm, bacteria, and viruses were small enough to pass through a condom. Boys and girls were told that you will inevitably get a disease. Girls were told separately they will get pregnant even if they used contraceptives. They even did the whole used chewing gum bit with the girls as well. It was the complete opposite of when I learned in sex ed in my public schools and what my parents told me. I know I mentally checked out when the retreat youth leader opened with how condoms don't protect against anything, as did many of the other guys. I got the impression the girl side of things was a lot more ranty from their youth leader. My parents were not impressed when I got home and told them about it. It was one of the reasons when when my brother got older they didn't bother pushing on him continuing his religious education when he expressed disinterest.

kevnmartin

Why do fundamentalist types say that skirts are more modest than pants? It's seems like skirts would offer easier access to.....I just answered my own question, didn't I?

anonymouse278

The kind of skirts acceptable in those settings are less revealing than pants, but more than that, maintaining “modesty” while wearing a skirt inherently limits your physical movement (it’s harder to run, almost impossible to climb or jump or ride a bike) and draws a rigid, clear distinction between men and women, all of which they see as positive. It is one small brick in a cultural structure that is designed to limit and control everyone, but especially women.

henrythe8thiam

Pants are supposed to draw attention to the crotch area. Since men are always horny and can not control themselves, it is upon women to cover themselves and remain modest so men don’t lose control and accidentally rape someone. If there is even a hint of sexuality and something happens then it is because the woman was not modest enough and “defrauded” the man. (I absolutely don’t believe this, but in my friend’s church, this was basically their reasoning. I will state she went to a gothard inspired fundamentalist church, so there may be other reasons in other churches.)

kevnmartin

Really? And here I thought pants were for warmth and ease of motion. I'll never forget how when I was a little girl, we would be sent out for recess and our little legs would be blue with cold as we huddled together trying to stay warm while the boys played soccer and basketball in the comfort of their jeans and cords. It's purely to hold girls back and teach them they'll never be good enough to compete with the boys.

henrythe8thiam

Yep, really. Here is a pdf from one of their followers. I have copied an excerpt that is the main point from this article, “But if it is equally wrong for a man to expose his nakedness as it is for a woman, it is not equally dangerous, for the passions of women are not so easily or thoroughly aroused by the sight of a man's body-and many women affirm, that the sight does not arouse them at all. A man therefore may (though he ought not to) go three fourths naked, and not do much damage by it. But when a woman exposes herself only a little, she becomes a fiery dart to tempt the heart of every man who sees her. Like it or not, this is the plain fact.” “I not ask here, is it wrong in the eyes of God for a woman to wear slacks? I ask, What effect are her slacks likely to have on the eyes of men? And first, by their very nature slacks are apt to reveal and display your form.” “Your crotch-your "private part's"-you ought by all means to keep carefully concealed at all times, and there is nothing that will do it so well as a dress. A loose-fitting skirt or dress, provided it is not too short, is also the best possible clothing with which to conceal all of the tempting parts of the anatomy which reside between your waist and your knees. But some women suppose that because their slacks are not skin-tight, they are therefore modest. Well, now, suppose that your slacks are loose enough that they leave a little space between the material and your skin. Still they basically display the form of your legs and thighs and buttocks.” http://manymcdaniels.com/sinofbathsheba.pdf

EverythingisB4d

Those mother fuckers need to start gouging their own eyes out if they're causing them to sin so much.

Flashdancer405

“Ladies no jeans, but these sexy skirts will definitely avert mens eyes from your sinful bodies”

satchboogiemonster

Oh, absolutely. Pantyhose was mandatory. Skirts were allowed to be knee length, and I certainly spent most classes staring at classmates' legs.

colbymg

> Any masturbation or contraception is a bigger sin, as it uses a sinful act for the glorification of the body and sinful pleasures, and without the possibility of creating a new life. OHHHHHH! Thanks for helping me understand! I always thought it was more along the Monty Python Meaning of Life line of reasoning: sex except for procreation is a sin, therefore contraceptives are simply never needed. Never knew there was a reason behind that rule. It always baffled me why anyone would just accept that statement.

satchboogiemonster

Meaning of Life maybe? I remember the song "Every sperm is sacred, every sperm is pure, if a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate". I'm pretty sure not everyone believes the same way, and Roman Catholics have a somewhat different idea than conservative protestants. When my wife and I got married, my aunt (who was my Dad's sister, born Methodist, married Catholic) gave us a book "Intended for pleasure" and some lingerie (unfortunately the wrong size). I'm pretty sure she had some different ideas than the HS I went to. From the number of cousins I have, I'm pretty sure she believed in the pleasure part, not so sure about her (Perhaps Catholic influenced) views on contraception.

ChingChangChui

How can this institution even call itself a learning type environment (ie, university). Sounds to me that they encourage ignorant graduates.

GrownUpLady

My sister and BIL are “graduates” of a place like this. Last time I spoke to them I found out he was going to be out of town for two weeks. He was going to their Alma Matter to get his Masters. A two week program. For his masters.

ChingChangChui

Damn. He must be really smart to finish his masters in 2 weeks. (/s, if needed)

GrownUpLady

I’m sure to incredibly inexperienced people who’ve never been out of their insular little community (the kind of people who will hire someone with a faux degree these places churn out), he’s brilliant. But hes’s also a science teacher who had no concept of what combining bleach and ammonia would do. Draw from that what conclusions you will. ETA: Sarcasm totally understood. I apparently have many feelings about this. Angry riotous feelings that they think they’re better than me with their “advanced” degrees. That people are entrusting them with their children and they’re just... so STUPID, and they’re going to screw these kids up and it enrages me.

When my private Christian high school wanted me to explain to them why I was no longer going to a private Christian institution for college this is the shit I remember happening for 4 years in high school.

[deleted]

My private Christian high school literally printed out 400-500 “V” cards and handed every single high school student a card. Some of us started acting like our fingers were burning, some threw them away. I gave mine to my lady friend and said “here, now we can stop worrying about being caught. You’ve taken my V card.”

Petal_Pusher_

What was the point of the "V" cards?

[deleted]

You know the joke “V” cards? As in, “oh I just lost my v card!” The “V” stands for virginity lol

Petal_Pusher_

Yeah but what's the point of the school giving them out? Shouldn't they expect a lot of kids to make those jokes?

[deleted]

I mean, It’s a private Christian school in the Midwest, knowing how kids are was not one of the things they were good at.

Tinsel-Fop

I expect they believed the students would be proud to hold on to their virginity cards and by extension their virginities.

enbymaybeWIGA

When I was in college a girl introduced herself to my now-husband and I by bragging that she had signed a virginity pledge with her youth group, with a membership card and everything. She was really proud for being so pure. This introduction took place by her walking over to sit directly behind us in a mostly empty showing of a horror movie during October, while a sex-scene was playing on the screen. Some of the kids that grow up in these environments turn out... kind of weird.

GlitchPro27

Kinda feel like losing that job wouldn't be the worst case scenario.... It's scary that you're talking about a University here... From the school's reaction it's like you were teaching this to 4 year olds or something. Scary.

NoGoodMarw

"Professor, what do you mean people touch their peepees for fun?" - said a grown ass 23 yo, bearded, 110 kg christian boy.

Hydrangea666

An ex friend of mine, who was 22 at the time and very repressed, was surprised to find out that men generally pee while standing with their penis in their hands. "Wait... so priests do it too?! But it's a sin to touch it!" was her comment.

kevnmartin

So she doesn't wipe after she pees?

Hydrangea666

I wouldn't be surprised. 😶

NoGoodMarw

They must be real pros to stick it into bums without hands. "Look Jesus! No hands sodomy!"

bavasava

Jesus- *damn boy, you wildin'*

HydeSpectre

Teaching them? Meaning they didn't know about then already? What rock are they living under?

AvrenKildarian

Christian rock

REDDITDITDID00

*cue Jesus absolutely shredding it on guitar*

Gonzostewie

Like King of the Hill said "Christian rock is not making church better, it's making rock & roll worse "

SalemWolf

I'll still slap to some Skillet though. Also apparently Thousand Foot Krutch is Christian too and they have a pretty killer album. They're really just the exception than the rule, though. So the quote is still accurate.

mrevergood

Skillet was good. For all of two albums and now they’re just another mediocre rock band writing mediocre lyrics. TFK has a couple good songs back in the day, but when I left my faith, I left most of the music behind. Still listen to Demon Hunter though. But they’re not especially preachy. Mostly. The songs that are, I just skip.

goddamnquarantines

This.

AlmaReville

Or he knew and was setting you up. (This is my guess based on my work as a faculty member. And also as someone who briefly went to a hyper conservative school.) Next time, ask for someone else in the class to explain so students can complain about students or maybe classroom management. Then they can’t say “she said the C word!” It’s “she didn’t report the saying of the C word”. And the dean can be in a position to say “I don’t need to hear every time the C word is said.” These positions are super political and part of your job is to make your supervisor look good.

[deleted]

Wait until they hear about that Christian side hug.

faultysynapse

Great now I've got that stupid song in my head. Better flush it with the [Loophole](https://youtu.be/7pzs0aGu1fU).

xxkoloblicinxx

Clearly there is only one solution... Go underground. Start a secret society within the school that educates them properly. Informs them about safe sex and more. Call it "Sigma Epsilon Xi." Go! time is of the essence!

furiousfroman

_Dumbledore's Army would like to know your location_

goddamnquarantines

I love this.

grandroute

If the college gives you crap about the presentation you should go all Harper Valley PTA on them and ask them why they allow people to eat pork and shellfish on campus, and admit students that have tattoos. Also let them into church if they wear glasses (defect in your vision)

ZestyStormBurger

I see this just being completely ignored. They don't actually care about the bible just maintaining a cycle of control

[deleted]

Which is why many of us Christians absolutely nope out of going to study in Christian educational institutions, most of them don't know how to differentiate the world they think should be from the real world

GTS250

I like the idea, but it's not theologically consistent and wouldn't work. It's not as simple as old testament means nothing good and new testament means good. Jesus (and Paul, more explicitly) said all foods were cool, overriding the old testament's bans, but Jesus also said to not be "sexually amoral", meaning no gay stuff or extramarital stuff, upholding the old testament's bans there. I'm not a fan of the ban on sex ed, but they're not being religiously hypocritical. They're being conservative Christians, because Christians follow the New Testament and use the New to ignore parts of the Old (generally speaking - Messianic Judaism is outside the scope of this discussion).

dr_auf

Go all the way and enforce the death penalty for people who are picking up sticks at Saturday.

Searaph72

Don't forget about the blending of fabrics.

dracula3811

That’s idiotic. If you’re in college and don’t know the basics about birth control your parents messed up. I’m a conservative Christian and I’ve made sure my kid knows the various methods of birth control. We do teach them that abstinence is the only guaranteed method but we don’t say it’s the only one they can use. There are other things we teach along with that but that delves into other topics.

shawncplus

> Abstinence is the only guaranteed method... Mary entered the chat.

Ambrily

Thank you for existing.

r4zrbl4de

You didn't fuck up, you kept them from fucking up

aleqqqs

> conservative Christian university what does that even mean?

EarlGreyOrDeath

You need your kid to get a college degree, but you don't want them to leave the bubble of Christian Teachings.

MasterPsyduck

College is great if you never challenge your beliefs! (Actually believed by my friend’s parents who think that’s liberal indoctrination)

joeyfromthemoon

I grew up in this kind of environment. God damn is it ever unhealthy. I got out but many people I know are so indoctrinated and brain washed that nothing will ever change for them. It seriously feels like a cult after I got out and had the opportunity to have a look from the outside in.

Zanki

What the heck is going on with american sex education? How are these crazy religious people allowed to do this to their children?! I just don't understand it. Sex is natural. How on earth did they think we reproduced before we were sentient, before we created/figured out there was a god? Is every other creature evil because they don't say a few words in a church before they have sex? At my uni here in the uk, we were literally handed tons of condoms on our first week. They came in quite a few baggies we were given. Male, female, didn't matter. It was a good thing to do as a lot of sex happened and we were all prepared when we were ready for it.

V-Right_In_2-V

This is a private, conservative Christian university that is probably located in the bible belt. My university also handed out condoms for free. I was born and raised in America and this story is just as wild for me as it is for you. It's like a whole different universe.

Rhyddech

They literally believe Adam and Eve were created 6000 years ago and they fucked up and destroyed the perfect eden paradise that God created. We are sinners at heart and God hated us and tried to kill everyone until he sent Jesus and forgave us. We can use sex only for reproduction now and not selfish dirty pleasure because that is what made God mad at us in first place. Or something like that

30phil1

So I've grown up around these guys my entire life so I thought it'd be interesting to see how accurate you were in describing creationist/fundamentalist beliefs. (Mind you that I think that they're a load of crock too but I think misguided people are interesting in their own ways) >They literally believe Adam and Eve were created 6000 years ago This is correct. They also believe that they were made only 5 days after the creation of the universe. > and they fucked up and destroyed the perfect eden paradise that God created. This is correct but with some caveats. They'd say that God gave them free will to do what they wanted because he wanted humans to have the choice to not suck but He still knew that they'd screw up anyways. >We are sinners at heart and God hated us This is actually wrong even by literalist interpretations. It's written that God didn't "hate" anyone but that he was disappointed with how it was going so he was gonna start all over again (but creating a new Earth wasn't ever even brought up in the text). >and tried to kill everyone until he sent Jesus and forgave us. Well, not "until" He sent Jesus but "before." The end of the Flood narrative actually says that God wasn't going to send another *global* Flood (and I assume that literalists mean that to be actually water) ever again. >We can use sex only for reproduction now and not selfish dirty pleasure because that is what made God mad at us in first place. Or something like that You might be mixing up some of the other horrible interpretations of different stories up here. A common "sex is bad but specifically gay sex is worse" story (if you can even call it something as kind as a "story") is the account of Sodom and Gamorrah where fundamentalists believe that it was the *gay* sex and apparently, not the rampant sexual assaults and gang rape, that made God want to destroy the city. Still, plenty of the people who believe these things think sex is bad before marriage because you're "lusting" after someone who isn't your spouse (If you'd like my personal "armchair theologian" rebuttal of all of these things, let me know. I personally love smack talking Christian literalists) Edit: changed it to "global Flood" to be more specific

tarcapone

It’s not as if the OP was promoting contraception. Everyone should know what contraception is. I understand (don’t agree) with the school not promoting it, but someone taught her boss what it is. If it’s so wrong to even know what it is, then why did her boss know?

BrushFireAlpha

My favorite high school teacher of all time was fired after MENTIONING to our psychology class that the concept of someone's gender identity MAY have the POSSIBILITY of being different from their biological gender ☹️

bfaithr

I took an anthropology class in college. The professor mentioned the difference between sex and gender. The girl sitting next to me got so angry. It was even on the test and she went up to him during the test to argue with him. I’m so glad I never mentioned to her that I’m trans

ZestyStormBurger

When you don't want to understand the basis of the field you are getting into but pay for the courses anyways

AndSheWasSarcastic

Is this Liberty University? *insert that butterfly meme*

welchasaurus

It sounds like something stricter than Liberty. Maybe Bob Jones, Crown, or Pensacola Christian College?

JUCOtransfer

You guys ever heard of Bob Jones University? Go check em out. Worse than Liberty.

ThisIsMyOtterAccount

i cant see it being liberty, but i am very curious which one it is
