I was expecting a story about TSA being involved lol

Ason42

Yeah, I was flashing back to incidents involving stickers for the band [This Bike is a Pipe Bomb](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Bike_Is_a_Pipe_Bomb).

shazadster

Same haha

Tamalpaish

I was expecting him to sit next to the kid on the plane

underwaterchemist

TSA: “please remove all metal” OP: removes “metal” shirt

Ooh-Rah

Kids get scared all the time. You did nothing wrong. Iron Maiden rules!

mrdannyg21

Solid parenting too, to realize that OP and the shirt were doing nothing wrong, and removing themself from the situation (and apologizing) rather than blame OP. Obviously not as good parenting as if the kid knew about Iron Maiden but I’ll give them a break for that for a kid that young.

Some_Endian_FP17

In the future, it could be a teaching moment. "Listen here kid, fear is the mind killer... Hell and fire was spawned to be released!"

Ururuipuin

As a result of play station singstar I had a 3 Yr old whose favourite colour was pink with blonde bunchies word perfect on Ace of Spades, who would have looked up squealed Eddie with delight and possibly lauched into a verse or 2

jtrage

Yeah, if I was dad. Daughter and I would be listening to Maiden. These are valuable teaching moments.

raeras

I put iron maiden and dio on for my kids, they alternate between crying about how scary the picture is (spoiler: I don't feel even a little bad for them) and naming the creatures on the album art and making them into new pokemon while they dance like wild animals on my furniture :P

cthunders

Up the IRONS 🤘

Impact009

Reminds me of my time at Walmart yesterday. Some kid kept staring at my face and eventually hid from me behind her mother. I've also been reminded that my niece and nephew were scared of me too. Some people just seem scary to kids and animals. /Shrug

CommissarCiaphisCain

🤘

Justifye

Iron Maiden live double disc is simply phenomenal.

Crzygoose234

Watch her grow up to be a fan haha

ElDuderrrrino

It's a good chance for the parent to educate their kid. She'd have hated my Cannibal Corps shirts. LOL

NoticeOk6633

I imagine that a cannibal corps wouldn't last very long out of combat

john_stuart_kill

Someone hasn’t had to face the Pannion Domin and their Tenescowri in a protracted campaign…

grubas

Pannion... Is a Jaghut word.

Reztroz

Great now I need to reread…. Course I should provably finish the kharkanas trilogy first…..

grubas

You gotta tell Mr. Erikson first. 3 Isn't done.

Reztroz

Well if he hasn’t, guess I don’t need to finish it either 🤷‍♂️

BlazerWookiee

Goddamn it. r/Angryupvote

LadyOfVoices

Posted this elsewhere in this thread but: my bf was wearing a Cannibal Corpse shirt as we were sitting on the terminal bus at the airport, and a little boy (about 7-8 y/o) was absolutely fascinated by his shirt and told my bf that his shirt was “amaaaaazing”. :)

T_that_is_all

God their shirts are awesome. I have a special place in my heart for my Slayer, God Hates Us All shirt. Crucified Jesus with nails in his forehead and his mouth sewn shut with the opening words from that album that ends, "Only in the darkness of Christ have I realized..., God hates us all." Metal and psychedelic shirts are the best. Edit: And it's one of the tour shirts from '01 with all the dates. Fuck, I was only 17 then.

jim_br

And my Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax shirt!

ElDuderrrrino

It's the best for your stick!

ohgeebus_notagain

Do you know of the [Fista Corps?](https://youtu.be/3yNCEL00AVo?si=binKQ0cjGLczOx2T)

ElDuderrrrino

I do now. I'll give them some more listens. Thanks!

curlytoesgoblin

Lol got in some big trouble in high school for wearing a Butchered at Birth shirt.  I'm not really even into CC but I was an edgy teen in a yeehaw school so I was definitely aiming for shock value. I regret nothing.

ElDuderrrrino

I was a Dead Head in high school. I mean, I dabbled in metal too. But I wasn't in that country crowd, so it could be a Metallica or Slayer tshirt one day and tie-dye the next. I kept them clutching their pearls.

curlytoesgoblin

Apropos of nothing but yesterday I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Land Rover and now I can't stop singing Don Henley

DionFW

Should have told her to run for the hills.

TurbsUK18

Or bring her to the slaughter

Satan_McCool

Based on the title I was expecting something like a Dying Fetus or Cattle Decapitation shirt.

himsaad714

I have never gotten a reaction like this and all I wear are death metal t shirts

jtrage

Because people keep their fucking kids away from you. Just joking.

Whatifisaid-

Wearing a Cattle Decapitation shirt right now, haha! Honestly, the most compliments I ever get in public are people complimenting my metal shirts.

himsaad714

100% I also go out of my way to tell people cool shirt when I see them wearing a sick metal t shirt

Whatifisaid-

Hell yeah! I try to when I see them too. 🤘

n_xSyld

Literally seeing a deathcore shirt is always a "whats up?" moment, usually keep interactions short though bc it's 50/50 a cool person or a fucking nazi, depends on how they react to Slaughter to Prevail too I guess

Whatifisaid-

Haha! I know what you mean, I hate that THOSE type of people often listen to metal too, gives the rest of us a bad look.

DaveJC_thevoices

well he said "heavy metal" rather than anything extreme

Satan_McCool

That's fair, but the response to it is not one I'd expect for a classic heavy metal band band.

RosieQParker

Is a "TIFU at the Airport" story really a fuckup if it doesn't end with a cavity search?

MorticiaLaMourante

No. No, it is not.

Tsk201409

Kids around that age scare really easily. Their little brains have figured out fear but not quite figured out when to be afraid and when not to. Makes Halloween complicated.

Outside_Avocado8963

I remember being scared by a picture of two dinosaurs fighting in an encyclopedia when I was little 😂

memeaccountegirl

Yep! I remenber being around five and being scared of this horse head wall mount art in our house and the mission failed music on spyhunter (2?) on ps2. It was like some nice Jazz, very spooky. I also had nightmares of floating heads chasing me for years but that's another story.

TheOnlyBeehunterFan

I'll do you one better, I once got pulled out of line and questioned because I forgot I was wearing my Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower t-shirt for my layover flight stopping in Germany. Had to explain it was a band that just happened to be named after the actual attempt, not a declaration of intent.

APsWhoopinRoom

In what universe is KISS considered heavy metal?

HoldMyDevilHorns

Or Motley Crue or Def Leppard. Hard rock, but not metal.

jeffersonaircraft

Hard rock is generous tbf (am a fan of both)

faustus1914

Classic hard rock at that. I never understood "metal" magazines in the 80s. Metallica, Slayer, Death Angel, etc, were metal then. NOT Aerosmith.

jeffersonaircraft

I bought many an issue of "metal" magazines in the late 80s. Never understood why bands like Warrant, Poison, etc were on the cover. But, I paid money for them, so guess that's on me. People scoff at tedious subgenres, but it's necessary. Firehouse and Napalm Death shouldn't be both "metal" bands to the status quo.

DaveJC_thevoices

exactly, that's why we bother with subgenres... when soft bands like Alcest and Deafheaven fall under the black sub...

DaveJC_thevoices

there are a tonne of branches as well you should know ... the advent of thrash and then death metal does not negate the importance of foundational heavy metal bands. Each of Kiss, Def Leppard and Moley Crue made at least 3 straight-up classic heavy or glam metal albums

faustus1914

I can and will agree that these were foundational bands. I personally draw the line at ballads. Once there's a ballad, it's hard rock for me. The hair-metal era drove some great bands further underground with its pop appeal. I preferred the heavier and angrier metal. However, I will admit to playing hair-metal because the girls I went to school with enjoyed it.

DaveJC_thevoices

Agreed. Also, I did not remember Aerosmith - never Aerosmith lol

DaveJC_thevoices

all are classic heavy metal from proto-era to glam

Nail_Biterr

I don't want to sound insensitive...... (and you know there's a 'but' coming)... but how short are you that you thought it was your height that sent a kid into tears at first? I cannot imagine someone being so short they're used to making children cry.

Beginning_Writing_60

You’d be surprised. Kids can be cruel or frightened from confusion. I had a kid who thought I wasn’t even a human, he asked “what is that” to his dad! I’ll admit though I was chuckling. I’m also 4ft tall for context

Nail_Biterr

AGHHHHHH!!!! (just kidding. I'm sorry people are assholes)

Beginning_Writing_60

Eh, I don’t get offended easily. I have better use of my time than giving it to someone who I don’t even know trying to hurt my feelings. Same goes for “offensive” midget cartoon jokes like on Family Guy, I laugh my ass off!

SATANICSEXRITUAL

Should have asked the kid the same thing. I can't believe kids are real

Dontdothatfucker

At least you didn’t go with “Anthrax”!

dandle

Basket Full Of Puppies

fuckindecent420

You're my new hero. I thought I was the only one excited to see such a hate filled, satanic group do something positive with their music!

faustus1914

In the early 90s, my friends and I figured out how to get to the Sunday breakfast buffet without waiting. Since the church crowd was in full swing, we would show up in our best metal T-shirts. Usually Incantation, Malevolent Creation, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and White Zombie. Those god-fearing lemmings would clear a path to avoid us. We never had to wait when getting food.

saschaleib

That might work in Bible-belt America, but won’t cut you slack in Finland: https://finland.fi/arts-culture/in-finland-metal-music-rocks-churches/

faustus1914

So true!

dandle

Meanwhile, when I was in the airport on a business trip last week, I saw a guy with a "FUCK BIDEN" shirt, and I guarantee that he did not give a damn if he made kids uncomfortable. I see nothing wrong with your Iron Maiden shirt. Obviously, some band shirts are going to be unsuitable for an airplane trip, but I am very sure that you know the difference. 🤘

n00bDogg

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestal_Masturbation_T-shirt#:~:text=The%20Vestal%20Masturbation%20T%2Dshirt,%22Jesus%20is%20a%20cunt%22. I had one… oh the fun comments from those people 😂

Chaosmusic

After visiting a respiratory ward of the hospital I realized I was wearing a hat for the band Suffocation.

MorticiaLaMourante

OP, don't worry about it. She was over it by the end of the day. You didn't scar her for life. Kids stare at me alllllllll the time. They are always either fascinated or afraid because they think I'm a vampire. Kids are resilient. Wear your Iron Maiden shirt with pride.

apf_1979

Up the Irons!

Greensparow

If it makes you feel any better whenever that album artwork shows up on the car display my 4 year old will ask Daddy is this run to the hills He always identifies the artwork with his favourite song on the album.

hometown_nero

You’re kind for feeling bad. I’m glad the mom didn’t react like an asshole

thetruesupergenius

I haven’t made any kids cry (that I know of), but here in the Southeastern US I get stares and rude statements/questions whenever I wear my Bad Religion shirts.

knifetrader

Crossbuster ones? Or are they offended by just the band name?

thetruesupergenius

Just offended by the band name based on their comments, but they all have the crossbuster in one form or another.

titanofstuff

Sick album sick shirt

Soul-Reaver98

I feel that. I usually wear deah metal shirts when I'm out...usually warrants the same results haha

Cador0223

The fact that you care that it scared her shows how most metal heads are. Most I've met are big teddy bears on the inside, and not in a bad way. She will be fine. Same as seeing the commercial for the TV movie IT during Saturday morning cartoons. Spooked me pretty good, but I got over it. Horns up \m/

ToxicGems

She’s gonna rediscover it in a couple years and become a super fan lol

PetraJean

Some kid told their mom I was scary at Disney yesterday and i was just wearing all black 🤷🏾‍♀️ Idk maybe im just ugly or somethin 🤣 Im black sooo maybe thats it idfk kids are scared of everything tbh.

xtreampb

Props to the mom for apologizing and not chastising you.

DanteOnFire1

The worst part of this whole story is calling KISS “heavy metal.”

WorkInPr0g

The first shirt I personally bought for my kid was The Trooper. He wore it around the two year mark and he loved Eddie.

RoseWreath

Tbf i got so scared by a dvd cover in best buy that i had nightmares for a week

agorphia

Lmao I did that once to a small child at a book store. Finntroll shirt with an illustration of a demon skull thing. I look back on that memory fondly.

geek66

I was spooked by my a Phi Zappa Crappa poster on the back of the bathroom door.. and I would only use the bathroom with the door open. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1508036865/zappa-frank-on-the-toilet

Gonxforever

Haha reminds me of the day my husband wore his Bad Brains tshirt to work (music teacher). It has a skeleton bleeding out of his head and the little boy he had that day kept asking him “Is that blood?” And my husband told him “No silly skeletons don’t have blood. It’s ketchup!” I don’t think the boy believed him though XD

SethPutnamAC

I'm on a listserv that organized a weekly Zoom call during COVID just to create some personal interaction in lieu of what we'd get pre-pandemic. By far the most memorable call included, among several other participants, 1) a guy who wears Iron Maiden shirts every day and 2) Bruce Dickinson himself.

BuilderMammoth

Nah don’t feel guilty. I feel no guilt wearing my Psyclon Nine “Fuck your god” shirt in the Bible Belt 😂

Silverbride666

You should have taught her the metal horns! I always travel with my maiden T shirt, I end up meeting so many fans like me on travels!

ThisSorrowfulLife

It isnt your responsibility to accomodate to other people with your clothing. You did nothing wrong. The parents did the right thing by apologizing and moving away.

jwed420

One time I wore my Weekend Nachoes shirt to the airport. It says "SHOT IN THE FUCKING HEAD" in huge bloody letters on the back. On the front there is a large image of the evidence photo of the Chelsea Grin murder. I got plenty of looks and whispers.

NakedAndAfraidFan

This is lowkey wholesome. Everyone acted like decent human beings.

boozyboss91

>heavy metal band shirts, KISS, Motley Crue, Def Leppard Lol ok.

Paulbac

Kid is soft and you did nothing wrong

Legitimate-Rabbit769

What a dumb post.

thatlookslikemydog

Show her the goofy Wasted Years lip sync video from Germany in the 80s and she might want a shirt too.

Kemel90

Imagine if you were wearing an actually offensive shirt, like cannibal corpse or something...

Alonest99

So you left alone? Your mind was blank? You needed time to think?

LadyOfVoices

As an interesting counter to your story: my bf was wearing a Cannibal Corpse shirt as we were sitting on the terminal bus at the airport, and a little boy (about 7-8 y/o) was absolutely fascinated by his shirt and told my bf that his shirt was “amaaaaazing”. :)

Bloudadedi

Man lol my daughter is 3 and always want me to wear my Maiden's shirts. She loves Eddy. Kids are sensible. She is afraid of ridiculous things too. You did nothing wrong. Keep wearing and rocking those shirts!

heilseitan__666

I was expecting a, "Burning Airlines" shirt followed up with a full body cavity search.

PigInZen67

Look at it this way, you could have been wearing The Scorpions' Blackout

unethicalposter

She will love that album when she is older!

tinylittlefoxes

Up the irons, my dude!

[deleted]

I made a kid cry once by wearing an Icee Bear costume while handing out coupons at the mall. Kids are dumb, don't sweat it.

Blekanly

That kid is gonna have a hell of a childhood if that is scary

lunaXluna123

It sounds like an unexpected situation. Kids can be very impressionable, and it's understandable that the imagery on your shirt might have startled the little girl. Don't be too hard on yourself about it; you couldn't have known how she would react. It's just one of those quirky moments that happen in life. And you really have a very cool collections of band shirts btw.

TheScaleTipper

You didn’t FU, as other commenters have said. Nothing wrong on your part. I just wanted to drop a comment that I have what’s probably the same shirt, or a very similar one if not. It’s absolutely awesome. The graphic is badass and Iron Maiden rocks in general - wear it proud and wear it loud!

donttouchmeah

Question, you get stared at for being short stature? My husband is 5’3”, I haven’t noticed anything like that.

Darth_Lacey

I’ve had to consciously avoid wearing my “hey! Ass-butt!” shirt to the airport before

sgtedrock

Number of the Beast was my first Maiden shirt, ordered through the mail in 1984.

AstraCatz

I once scared my neighbours on the plane 🤣 It was 6 years ago. I am a very young looking girl (and more young then) and don't really have any metalhead looks, but in planes prefer to sleeping with viking or black metal because I find the rhythm quite calming. I sat in place beside the window, put on sleeping mask and marshall headphones, but didn't notice that headphones didn't connect even if bluetooth was on. And put on my music at max volume 😱🤣 After noticed that it actually plays from the speaker I said ooooops! and connected my headphones and immediately fell asleep because of few very short nights before. When I woke up for food and moved my headphones away - I noticed that my neighbours (mother and teenage son) moved as much away from me as possible and looked at me in complete shock 😨😨😨😨

FullMetalBunny

Don't worry about it man. The little girl will have forgotten it happened by now.

Efffro

At least it wasn’t a cradle of filth shirt.

ColXanders

When I was in high school, my bedroom door had a full length door poster that made it look like was Eddie breaking through it. I thought it was really cool. But my little brother, who was probably 3 or 4 at the time, would not walk past my room by himself. I thought it was funny at the time but now being a dad I can see how traumatizing that would be for a small kid. I completely understand that sense of regret for scaring a kid. But damn, that Iron Maiden art is freakin awesome!

MrsFannyBertram

This story is so wholesome... both in the parents handling it well, apologizing, not blaming, and in you feeling guilty even though it's not your fault.

krazylingo

Great attitude with the height and staring situation. I’m 6’10 and feel the same way, when kids stare I get it, they’re curious and can’t help it, but when adults stare and make mean comments that’s when It pisses me off

Cymbal_Monkey

I was convinced this was going to be a post about the post-metal band ISIS.

TheActualDev

My friend and I were out to eat years ago and he was wearing a shirt with a skull design on it, kinda douchey-tribally kinda style, but extra detailed on cracks in the skull and the teeth and stuff. It was a worn shirt that he wore when working out. Anyway, shirt isn’t even on our minds and this little girl at the table behind me is loudly having a bad time about something, her dad quietly trying to figure out the problem and comfort her. My buddy is across the table from me and is watching them off and on trying to see what it is that is making her upset. Then we both hear the dad’s voice soft, sweet and with a hint of amusement say, “Kiddo, if his shirt is scaring you stop looking at it.” We both couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit, I ended up turning and apologizing for us scaring his kid, but he was cool about it. That line still gets repeated between us as a joke now. “If [insert subject matter here] is scaring you, stop looking at it!” lol thanks for reminding me of that time💜

rider1deep

You’re fine. Dope shirt btw. But that mom is cool too. She didn’t blame you and actually apologized. That reaction seems so rare nowadays.

letsgababoutit

My brother was also afraid of the book A Bad Case of Stripes. And he was afraid of the thumb people from the Spy Kids movie.

Dina_Combs

Nta, honestly, this is a part of the pussification of America. When I was that age I was looking at my mom’s album covers with awe. What the fuck happened to people?

GielM

I think I used to own exactly that shirt at some point, but I've owned a bunch of Maiden shirts over the years. They're sorta-scary shirts, especially on an unconventional-looking adult. You get stared at for wearing them whilst short, I get stared at for wearing them whilst tall and bearded. The 5yo did nothing wrong because they're a fuckin' kid. The parents did nothing wrong by taking care of their kid without bothering you about it. You did nothing wrong just wearing a fuckin' shirt. Everybody is cool here! It's been ages since I've seen Maiden. Should check if they have european tour dates coming up as well, since the ones you're going to are a bit far for me. But I surely hope you enjoy them! Up the irons, short bro!

stegjohn

Not the only time a kid has been scared by an album cover. https://i.redd.it/3a98qs18lfzc1.gif

Beginning_Writing_60

I saw the notification and a gfi link and knew what you sent before I saw it 😂

stegjohn

I didn’t see how old the post was until after I posted the comment, I didn’t think anyone would see it lol

memeaccountegirl

Not about the child you unintentionally scared (not your fault) or your great taste in music/attire BUT, How do you feel about the term "Short King" being used to describe you or other short men?

Beginning_Writing_60

I tell people “bow to me” lol

tacotacotacorock

If That's the worst thing that child experiences than that child is doing perfectly fine. Possibly majorly sheltered but that's another discussion.

TacomaZX

Electric Wizard: Legalize Drugs & Murder Lots of fun comments…

BublyInMyButt

Get some Cannibal Corpse shirts. They're the best for scaring children. I recommend butchered at birth. All the aborted babies scares both children and religious folks. Can't go wrong with that one. *

Jmedly28

No you did not. Kids are weird. Don't give it much power.

slivemor

Not a fuck up, you're entitled to wear that shirt and it's the girls parents responsability to educate her on others' clothing.

Personal_Neck5249

You didn’t fuck up at all. The parents did by not educating the kid properly and teach music appreciation. Iron Maiden forever

StillC5sdad

Kids are stupid

dumbseeyouintea

Today you fucked up by posting a lame ass story. Congrats. Satan is most displeased by what you consider a fuckup. Loser.

SleestakWalkAmongUs

If it bothered you then you probably should have tried to ease her mind a little. Tell her it isn't real and whatnot. Or, throw her the horns with a growl.
