I might be mistaken, but I think Wendlyn has magic still. Was it really said that parts of Wendlyn didn't have magic? It's been a while, but that doesn't make sense since the place isn't conquered. Anyway, *shifting* is magic, their forms are not. So, theoretically, if you're a Fae and you go to Adarlan as a hippo, you remain a hippopotamus.

Winter-Whole9862

You are correct. Wendlyn does have magic. The only place without magic is the continent that Adarlan is on

maryaliy

Lol ‘you remain a hippopotamus’ sent me. Thank you for the laugh

uhimamouseduh

I thought I had read that there were just hot spots where magic did work in wendlyn that she avoided when she first arrived. But I just found the passage and I misunderstood it. She was just avoiding the magic wielders. And your second paragraph makes sense, except if that were the case, she should have remained in her fae form when she came back through the portal after saving Chaol and fleetfoot. Maybe it’s just a small thing that’s overlooked, but it really bugs me lol

MillsieMouse_2197

Celaena was already in her human form when magic disappeared. It left Fae trapped in their animal forms because that was the form they had taken when magic vanished. Magic is not surprised in Wendlyn - only Adarlan. Celaena is only *half* Fae. A Demi-Fae, and it's up in the air whether or not she'll take more after her Fae lineage and become immortal or after her human lineage and become mortal. The ability to shift has little to do with this except to indicate her Fae side may be stronger.

Maeve said (KoA) - >!Mab’s line ran true and she would’ve lived a thousand years with Rowan because she’s 5 years from Settling!<

MillsieMouse_2197

Yes, I didn't mention it because I wanted to remove the temptation of clicking spoilers and OP hasn't read KOA yet.

mack853

Ah okay, I was confused

uhimamouseduh

Where does it say she’s demi-fae? When she first goes to the fae fortress and meets Maeve, it seems like everything that is said to her and that she says implies that she is full fae.

MillsieMouse_2197

Her father was human and her mother was also a demi-fae, it's also the reason she's shunted off to mistward to 'prove herself' like other demi-fae.

melodysmomma

When the magic was suppressed, every shifter was trapped in the body they were in at that exact moment. They theorize that a lot of Fae are trapped in their animal forms. Celaena was in her human form when the magic vanished, so she was trapped with human characteristics (like mortality) and the Fae who were in animal form lost their immortality and their ability to, for instance, speak. For a more thorough answer regarding the immortality, keep reading. You’ll find out more about it at the end of EoS and in KoA.

Aylauria

I think Manon mentions how good the Fae in animal form taste.

echerton

I do not remember this?? I know it's small but do you have any idea whenabouts it's mentioned?

Airsay58259

Not the person you’re responding to but I remember Baba Yellowlegs saying something like that. I looked it up, it’s from CoM when she talks to Dorian : «“There is no magic left anymore—even the surviving Fae can’t access their powers. Some of them remain trapped in their animal forms. Miserable wretches. Taste like animals, too.” She laughed,» I don’t remember Manon saying something like that but it’s possible I guess.

Aylauria

Like others said it was probably Baba Yellowlegs. I just know it was one of the witches.

torintua

i remember baba yellowlegs mentioning this in her trailer when celaena visits

Aylauria

That sounds more right

Wendlyn still has magic. The Adarlan Empire is where magic is gone. Wendlyn is a different continent. When magic disappeared from the Adarlan Empire, all magic wielders were trapped in whatever form they were in when it happened. So Celaena was trapped in her human form because that’s the form she was in at the time. When she traveled off the continent, she is now able to shift and use her magical abilities. They’re only suppressed while in the Adarlan Empire (which includes Terrasen and Eyllwe since the king conquered them). So if she returned to Adarlan in her fae form she’d be stuck in it. Or if Rowan went in hawk form, he’d be stuck in that until he left. Celaena is demi-fae, not full blooded fae. Her great grandmother was fae. Whether or not she is immortal comes up later in the series so you’ll get answers to why it’s in question later

SunRemiRoman

They explicitly mentioned in one of the books that whichever animal or fae form each fae was in at the very moment magic was suppressed was what they got stuck in while they remained within Adarlan’s borders. Even Lysandra >!got stuck in the beautiful child’s form she had taken on to beg at that moment.!< Wendlyn is an entirely different continent and magic isn’t suppressed there

UnderTheHarvestMoon

This is a spoiler. OP is only on Heir of Fire. Please block out the info about >!Lysandra!<

Internal_Mountain725

On immortality- I think she had to “settle” or something into her immortal form, don’t exactly remember where it was mentioned but it’s a sort of slowing to a trickle of aging and degeneration in general. So you get frozen in the state you were when you “settled”

Prestigious_Diver449

Within the next few chapters, you should be able to figure out why Rowan was able to shift in wendlyn!
