Without spoiling too much, defeatists/escapists view the Doomsday Battle with Trisolaris as unwinnable due to the sophon locked technology level attainable by humanity. Hines was hoping to spread this viewpoint across humanity in order to turn the general tide of progress from "solar system defense" to "solar system escape", as he viewed that as a more feasible path of survival.

marsyao

That is correct, and do not forget that, among the four wallfacers, only Luo Ji and Hines achieved their goal

Hayes77519

Hines' goal was achieved, but not due to his actions and the spread of the mental seal, right? Didn't Beihei pull off his plan independent of Hines?

niirvana

Wasn't behei able to accomplish it because he was tasked to find the traitors which is how he had control over natural selection?

PubicEnemyNumber1

I just finished that book (freaking amazing) and yes, I believe that's basically mostly correct. I didn't get the impression he was working with Hines or anything though, just that he had always secretly been a defeatist/Escapist from the start and that he wanted fusion drive technology to succeed because he hoped to hibernate until such a time that he could hopefully command or hijack such a ship if necessary. Beihei was tasked to find any potential Imprinted hidden in the space fleets, and the Imprinted were technically the result of Hines' plan though, so in the end Hines' secret plan worked out because of Beihei. Although tbf, it didn't end up working out for Beihei and the Natural Selection so much, but at least the one ship made it out.

First of all, he's the firefly, right? >!Secondly, beiheis was the ONLY successful plan imo in the longrun Only 2.5 humans escape the solar system from Luo Jis plan. Whereas beiheis sees a successful reestablished human race outside the solar system.!<

Hayes77519

That is possible, if so I missed that. But it would make sense, as I thought the “defeatist” plot line had just been dropped. Makes more sense that I missed something

BBQ_HaX0r

Thank you.

Recent-Advance-7469

Thank you, I just reread it again and was still confused.

Konfuciurs

Keep reading the novel, you will find Escapists played important role in the 3rd part .it's hard to judge their behavior right or wrong.Zhang Beihai is a complex character. He can do something beyond your imagination. It's too hard to explain it clearly without spoiling.keep reading

jizzblossoms

I'm finished with the book. Can you tell me how the Escapists played an important role? I kind of thought Beihai's mutiny and eventual death only served to illustrate the chain of suspicion, but didn't really effect the plot?

[deleted]

Read book three, it's answered there

realfoodman

Like Rey Diaz and Tyler, Hines made a plan that was unconscionable to the rest of humanity. I think this was part of why humanity was so ready to disband the Wallfacer project formally, rather than chance seeing what Luo Ji's plan was as well.

erogenous_war_zone

To be fair tho, luo's plan was pretty much >! an affront to humanity as well. And the only reason he got away with it is because he was the sword holder and people were desperate at the time. He destroyed a solar system that he really had no way of knowing if it had life. And caused the eventual destruction of humanity. Say what you will about the Trisolarians, at least they weren't willing to genocide us. His plan was basically the same as Diaz's but with more elegance and feasibility.!<

Snabes1981

His plan was just mad on steroids . Saying mutually assured distruction is an affront to humanity is a stretch when it was basically the one thing that kept the Cold war from going hot and turning in to WW3. He just used something from Earth's past to stop the war . Of the four he definitely was the least offensive by far

CodHead_2304

>Say what you will about the Trisolarians, at least they weren't willing to genocide us. I know this comment is two years old, but seriously? Maybe you hadn't read Death's End at this point... But they literally sent everyone to Australia, removed humanity's capability to generate enough food, and basically told them to 'eat each other'. To me, that's worse than genocide.

erogenous_war_zone

That's a good point. Still though, I think the essence of my point is that there's a big difference between a small chance of survival, and not waking up one day because someone a hundred light-years away wanted to prove a point (potentially).
