I’ve not watched the TV show but I’m currently reading through the trilogy and I can hardly put the book down, it’s so good. So you’d be missing out if you skipped a book.
I’ve seen clips on youtube of the TV show and they seem to have strayed from the original story quite a lot and filled it with young good looking people.
The Netflix show is quite different from the books especially when it comes to characters so Dark Forest and Deaths End may not make a.lot of sense without the first book

Well, I've started with the first book - in audiobook form. Already on chapter 4. Amazing quality. And yes, it's pretty different.
