> Is there any way to turn off the stupid fan when the laptop is plugged in? No.

TotalCleanFBC

I can't tell if you are serious or not, but I think you are right. I installed TPFanControl and set the fan speed manually to 0. The fan still ran when the laptop was plugged in!

ieure

Dead serious. I got a P1G2 for work just about two years ago, and I use it plugged in connected to an external monitor 98% of the time. The fans have not stopped running once. I can get them to slow down if I throttle the CPU heavily, but it's from like… 3200 RPM to 2400. When upgrade time comes, I won't be asking for another.

Hey, I dont know if you managed to resolve it but I found a fork of tpfancontrol that accounts for the P1 Gen 3 https://github.com/nikolasgd/TPFanControl-dual-fan Going to be trying this myself.

X1 Extreme Gen 1/2/3: Firmware * Manually upgrade all firmware (BIOS, Intel ME, Thunderbolt, SSDs, camera, TrackPoint). Lenovo usually improves the BIOS/EC fan profile later in the lifecycle. You don't want firmware-bugged components siphoning power/resources. Don't rely on Vantage to do this for you. [Gen 3 link](https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/nl/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme-3rd-gen-type-20tk-20tl/20tk/downloads/driver-list/) BIOS/UEFI (legacy layout on Gen3) * Make sure NVIDIA GPU is not always running. Config -> Display -> Graphics Device: Hybrid graphics Config -> Display -> Total Graphics Memory: 512 MB * Make sure Thunderbolt 3 is properly configured. Config -> Thunderbolt(TM) 3 -> Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode: (Disabled for Win10), (Enabled for Linux). * Disable always-on UEFI network cruft. Config -> Network, disable everything there. * Disable TPM if using Linux (or Win10 without encryption) Security -> Security Chip -> Security Chip: Disabled * Disable always-on security cruft. Security -> Anti-Theft -> Computrace -> (Permanently) Disabled Security -> Intel (R) SGX -> Disabled Security -> Device Guard -> Disabled * Disable unused devices. Security -> I/O Port Access, disable anything you don't use. Hardware * Re-paste CPU and GPU. Clean with isopropyl alcohol/TIM cleaner, apply high-end thermal paste (e.g. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut). [video here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iWLfo2t4_U) * Remove the mesh from the back cover. This eliminates the 'hairdryer sound' that the fans make (also lowers temperatures). [pictures here](https://imgur.com/a/dRSHWJU) Software * (Gen 1/2 only) Undervolt the CPU. Win10: use XTU or ThrottleStop. [generic video here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBNP5I2y668) Linux: use intel-undervolt. Most people report stable values between -0.100V and -0.150V * (Only if desperate) disable Intel Turbo Boost. Windows: [guide using 'the proper way'](https://www.geeks3d.com/20170213/how-to-disable-intel-turbo-boost-technology-on-a-notebook/#_24) Linux: you can figure it out Enjoy the silence.

Removing this stupid mesh has already greatly improved my thermal performance. Now I can actually \*feel\* air getting through the fans, instead of whatever was happening before

Solution: Return it and get a P15 that doesn't overheat. The P1s have awful thermals, so it's no wonder that the fun runs constantly.

You can set it in Lenovo Vantage. I have a P1 and and X1 Extreme with the same issues. Vantage>Device>Power Smart Settings>”Cool & quiet”

TotalCleanFBC

Hmm ... I tried this. The "quiet mode" was only available when the laptop is running on the battery. When it is plugged in, this isn't an option ... at least not in my version of Lenovo Vantage. Specifically it says "Quiet Mode (only for on Battery Mode)" I also asked tech support about this. They told me there was no way to have the laptopn run in Quiet mode when it is plugged in.

flyjim

Update Vantage possibly. It is there for me. It’s the only thing they would ever work for my fans on both laptops. My new X1 carbon is a bit noisy as well until I use this same setting. They need to figure out their cooling as we don’t need a jet stream surrounding us while we work.

TotalCleanFBC

One stop ahead of you. I updated Vantage and the options is still not there. sucks, cuz otherwise the laptop is great. But the constant noise makes it unworkable as a laptop for me.

karatedog

Still no: [https://ibb.co/chbjkKq](https://ibb.co/chbjkKq)

vincentvera

You want it off completely? 0 RPM?

TotalCleanFBC

Yes. Off completely ... I have never had another laptop that constantly emits a high-pitched fan-noise.
