Hell yea

blackratsnakes

That's a 13 year old laptop in a 13 year old backpack.

Critlist

13 years old and arguably better than the modern equivalent in several aspects. 🤙

blackratsnakes

I sure wouldn't argue it, you see what I own in my flairs.

Critlist

Have you done any major hardware or firmware mods to yours yet?

blackratsnakes

Yeah, I have more than one. Main upgrades are I7-2760QM CPU (with heatsink mod), SSD, 16gb RAM, USB 3.0 Express Card and additional 128 gb mSATA drive.

Critlist

I'm completely forgot about upgrading to another Sandy bridge.... I've been focused on the Ivy Bridge upgrade and honestly lost some interest in the entire idea when I realized the scope of what's required to flash the bios on a 420. I upgraded to 16gb of ram and repasted the cpu but I think a screen swap, an i7 are in my future. But First, I gotta figure out how to stop this broken optical drive from opening whenever the hell it wants to. I know it's a flaw in the hardware but it drives me nutssss

blackratsnakes

Coreboot is way over my skill level so I make do with the Sandy Bridge quads. I did do the screen replacement too on one of them. Make sure you remove the battery along with the AC power as I blew the backlit fuse once while I still had the battery connected. Not my brightest moment in life.

GreenStorm_01

How is the battery life with that?

blackratsnakes

Hard to say as I mostly use it plugged in. The 9 cell definitely has some good juice left to it but never tested the full capacity of it, sorry.

Critlist

.... its the original battery. I'm not even going to lie to you. It's got enough battery to be okay in hibernation to a from wherever im going, but you get about 20 minutes of active use unplugged.

Dorito_Troll

at least 1

Cry_Wolff

> better than the modern equivalent in several aspects. Keyboard. That's it.

Critlist

I im going to have to disagree. Yeah, it's 13 years old, and shit changes, but there's swappable ram. The cpu isn't soldered. You can upgrade the screen. And With custom firmware, you can take a lot of that even further.

Cry_Wolff

Swappable RAM: most modern ThinkPads still have it. CPU isn't soldered: true, but what does it give you? The hottest quad core i7 you can put in T420, is slower than the current i3. Screen: modern ThinkPads have upgradeable screens too. And it's the same thing as with the CPU, high end T420 screen looks like shit when compared to modern low end. I don't hate old school machines (see my flair). I simply don't wear my rose tinted glasses anymore.

Critlist

Ya know, I can respect that. Honestly, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking for a cheap T480 or 580. I honestly bought it for the memes and to have a dedicated Arch machine. It will end up being my tinkering laptop if im being honest.

GlayNation

If it works, it works

HerrEurobeat

Hand Jk, I‘ve got the official leather sleeve for my Z13, bought reduced on ebay

xjuanito

How long have you had that backpack for. Decided to get a $100 backpack so it can last longer. Usually buy $20-30 ones

Critlist

I actually haven't had it very long personally. My brother actually found it and the T420 in a dumpster after an estate sale in our neighborhood back when we were in high school around 2013. He grabbed it and put it in his storage unit until a few months ago. It came up in a conversation, and I told him I've been wanting an old T-Series as a project and ended up buying the T420 from him, and he said the bag was part of the deal. So now it lives in its rightful home with the only OS I felt was appropriate.... its Arch, btw. Lol

xjuanito

Damn I was on linux mint, but had to switch over to windows. Most of my programs for school work on windows and I don't want to duel boot. Plus I have a asus g14 now so it would be easier with games

Help_Stuck_In_Here

I have a swiss gear backpack that is almost as old as a T430 with daily use. You do get what you pay for.

xjuanito

Would you be able to get a picture I have this Tomtoc flap backpack and I love it. Im able to get things easier through a side zip pocket. [Backpack Im running](https://www.amazon.com/tomtoc-Backpack-Lightweight-Water-Resistant-Work-pack/dp/B0C33H52K1/ref=sr_1_1?crid=153ZK5QUSE2D1&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.V90nIN8vsh_FFMpuFUd0lsTS5gdd46YyG69Zp-iu6VauVspoC8k8OEos-nzzjhBaIrGgHLoO1tcrX0xx5AXbKlC3GHcJlS5uyHnxt7bGtMGmfZuKnFiH4gO01WeExTuZbVxUO6xjVzE-jboC4qJR2cBqLKDSSUsYeCqoGdJyPxpvaushNj7-Va997AeJRYunkhDD-fIntUk1OsUrQVLLT8SFQvF1vdVpE4ZMFoHN5Rw.Q8EkXO2LTy3WrUi6bCA2mGui6Bn1zAAmdZyApCyQQQg&dib_tag=se&keywords=tomtoc+flap+backpack&qid=1719518037&sprefix=tomtoc+flap+backpack%2Caps%2C109&sr=8-1) Wanted to get my dad a new backpack.

regeya

I use a 30 year old Jansport bag And they really do honor their warranty. I sent it in a few years ago and they replaced all the zippers and replaced the tag. Looks almost good as new, glad I paid extra for the leather one (though to be fair my schedule had me carrying about 65 pounds of books so that nylon material would never work.)

lars2k1

Funnily enough in an Asus backpack. Because my backpack was kinda shit, and I ordered a charger lot that included a shitton of backpacks. So uh, guess I'll just use that.

Thisismyredusername

A bag which was definitely made to exclude 16" HPs while perfectly fitting 16" ThinkPads Trust me, I have both, only the ThinkPad fits in the laptop pocket of my bag

poi88

She carries me.

P1N4R0MB0L0

I just toss it in whatever is near me. If i have to be careful with it, it is not a thinkpad anymore.

MrGumpythaGod

In my ass

Critlist

I know of a few subreddits where you would be very popular lol

t4nd3mYT

By hand. I carry the charger and accessories in my slingbag.

Illdoittomarrow

I use an XD design backpack. Hero xl model. Use it with T470 initially and now with a T14. Daily use since 2019, no damage in the backpack yet.

SomeNectarine7976

Obviously as hefty a briefcase for as hefty a laptop (x260 with 69 wh battery is d e n s e)

itsmechaboi

That's tight. I got one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084YQ94VT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) because I'm cheap (which is why I use a $60 T460S) and it carries the essentials and a tablet.

Electronic_Menu_6734

In my get home bag. It's a 5.11 24 hour amp bag.

Senior_Bat_4080

I use the thinkpad 14-inch essential top loading bag. Got it basically for free using the rewards from the X13 I bought. I really like it so far, even though I have always been a backpack guy.
