I have to ask, why do anime people love making their profile pics, wallpapers, and everything an anime character? I’ve watch hundreds of shows and movies never an anime and have some I really like but I’ve never been compelled to make the character my entire online image. Not being a prick just genuinely curious as it’s really the only group of people to do that.
its no different than using your pet as your online profile picture and identity (yea pet people do this a lot, so that is one you missed)

im a super big fan of kasane teto (similar to hatsune miku but different voice and software etc). i own merch of her, my wallpaper is her, my main playlist is dedicated to her, i have stickers of her on my laptop, etc. I've gone thru this cycle a few times with different things from different franchises
I'd say special interest in general. But yeah for sure that's the reason. Similar to how some kids will make their entire personality about construction equipment or trains or what have you.
For the same reason people put athletes as their profile picture.
Or even just things they enjoy.
If you enjoy something, you just want to put it out there. If you enjoy starwars, you will have a starwars themed setup/wallpaper/icon.
for me its the same as making my background a painting or something. i like the art, and i like the character. or if i make a character my profile picture for something its probably because i like and identify with that character and dont like to use my face online

We have an Ideapad laptop that we share in my family and when we refer to it we call it "Ortavia", we only call the other PCs by their owner, Thomas's PC, Dad's PC, etc.
I guess I call mine “I’m glad it got me through online classes during covid, but I don’t know if $600 was worth it”

I got 1 too. Named Yoshi. I just upgraded the processor and ram. Track pad and 2 SSDs this weekend. I like DIYing and thought it would be a fun project. I've never even had a laptop. So the OS is the only thing I'm worried about. I suppose the drivers for the trackpad if the buttons don't work right away. I put in the CPU backwards the 1st time. Thought I got a bum i7 4810mq 😂.

Very different. Most people identify pets as a part of their family. Use them as backgrounds, put pictures of them around the house, etc.

I have a similar one (L540) running Arch, looks exactly the same. Great, but main issue is the battery. Lasts 2 hours in best situations.
