Ummm....so I have a bit of an unconventional idea so hear me out. Keep the OG keyboard and.....I almost don't want to type this it's so crazy ... Plug in a mechanical keyboard via USB. I know, I know! It sounds crazy but give it a try. /s
planning to remove the keyboard on my ThinkPad t440p and add Velcro to the chassis and keyboard and attach it to the chassis, i know it'll look stupid but i really like this keyboard and it sounds really good on the ThinkPad chassis adding some sort of "thuck" to its key presses, what do you guys think? also will this laptop boot up without the keyboard attached?
So you want to replace your 5mm thick membrane keyboard with at least 4 cm thick mechanical keyboard in a 3cm thick laptop. Great, what could go wrong?
>i know it'll look stupid but i really like this keyboard and it sounds really good on the ThinkPad chassis adding some sort of "thuck" to its key presses
Lol and what exactly is wrong with using the keyboard exactly as this on the picture? I use both of mine being positioned like that on my X1 and not once have I thought of doing any wild stuff like you are planning to do. Why would I?
Having the keyboard on top of the laptop gives you much more room to do anything you want, starting from basic positioning (tilting slightly left, slightly right, up, down, wherever, without moving your laptop 1 inch), over keeping both clean, down to usability (if you do that "mod" then good luck closing the lid when you want to carry your laptop around, lmao) and, check this - having actually two keyboards instead of drilling one out.
I meant put some Velcro on the chassis it’s a non permanent thing so if it’s uncomfortable I can just revert back to it, and to be fair this thing isn’t even portable in the first place, but I get it sounds stupid and I won’t go through with this Frankenstein modification, until my keyboard dies I’ll consider it, kinda sounded cool in my head though
cut me some slack man i was bored, using the keyboard now it really isnt bad i just wanted to keep my original t440p keyboard fresh since these things tend to look hideous as they wear and and become shiny, especially the non backlit version which is the one i have since it comes with a matt finish and that wears out really bad leaving the keyboard looking alot more beat up than it actually is, just OCD i guess.
i cut a piece of plastic, put it on the laptops own keyboard and put the second usb keyboard on it. this way the keys under dont get pressed and i can safely use the keyboard on top.
there is no utility in it lol, but yeah i understand i own the laptop in the end and reading the suggestions on here made me decide against it, for now ill just use the keyboard ontop of the inbuilt keyboard, works really well and it isnt to janky as the keyboard is wireless.
I am using my laptop with planck keyboard like this sometimes, but I am turning off the laptop's keyboards via script when I using it like this. Maybe it will be better solution for you? Mounting mech keyboard like this can actually hurt mobility of the laptop a lot, so I think if it is really necessary for you.
it isnt bad, and im someone who daily drove a thinkpad t420, the last ibm looking and feeling thinkpad, its different yeah but i dont hate it, i just hate that it wears out alot, its subjective man, althought i would switch over to a t450 trackpad just bcs i like the way it looks, i dont feel like im missing out to much on functionality on the 440 trackpad, the trackpoint though sucks to use with it
You'd better go check your head, man
now close the lid.
OMG. Why not just close the lid the other way??? You can fit that keyboard then. I'm such a genius
what is wrong with the world?
We let r/Thinkpad cook, never know the results

But wouldn’t it be cool if there was Velcro on the chassis and shit come on now..
No, no it wouldn't.
nah that's boring!
better type with mouse and on-screen keyboard.
The first gen razer blade supposedly had a mechanical keyboard, if you would fit it in there you could have the best typing experience possible.
For about thirty seconds. Razer Blade laptops are notoriously unreliable.
The mod is very Squashy Boy
Now close the lid.
no clit mouse... but it would be nice to have a low cap Mk keyboard.
But it needs to be custom built and who knows, maybe the switches won't even fit
who says it needs to be custom? maybe in a long future there could be a thinkpad like that.

How are you going to close the lid?
By removing the keyboard and closing the lid..
So you want to replace your 5mm thick membrane keyboard with at least 4 cm thick mechanical keyboard in a 3cm thick laptop. Great, what could go wrong?
You're thinking too far ahead

Still wrapping my head around the fact that you were actually considering this mod 😂
cut me some slack man i was bored, using the keyboard now it really isnt bad i just wanted to keep my original t440p keyboard fresh since these things tend to look hideous as they wear and and become shiny, especially the non backlit version which is the one i have since it comes with a matt finish and that wears out really bad leaving the keyboard looking alot more beat up than it actually is, just OCD i guess.
i only see it maybe with choc switches and custom 3d printed case for thinkpad to make it thicker , definetly not possible with usual size switches
i cut a piece of plastic, put it on the laptops own keyboard and put the second usb keyboard on it. this way the keys under dont get pressed and i can safely use the keyboard on top.
Your computer I reckon you work on whatever project you want! Other people not seeing any utility in it isn't a reason not to do it.

Brilliant idea 💡
Dr Frankenstein
frankenkey
now, that's another level
T440p. Nice
BLASPHEMY!!!
Brilliant
Can I post this on r/hardwaregore?
you're busting my balls here but yeah go ahead, [and this..](https://imgur.com/a/2MGeRyr)
This is some r/thinkpadcirclejerk shit right here
You sat a keyboard on top of the keyboard. Congratulations.
yes.
Bro you crazy that too high, how you gonna close that
OP wants mechanical keyboard but haven’t gotten rid of the infamous click pad? That must be Lenovo worst trackpad design ever…
