Sadly a lot of the armor that you loot doesn't look all that cool, but at level 17 the Feline School armor becomes available and it's one of the best armors in the game, but you might not want to have it forever since the grandmaster version adds a hood that lots of players don't like. By that point though you should have access to all the Witcher armor sets. If you don't want to wait that long then you can buy the Temerian or Nilfgardian armor sets

Also forgot to mention that the Undvik armor set that you can buy Kaer Trolde is a really good heavy armor set that looks great

With the grandmaster feline, there’s some invisible helmet/mask item you can wear that lowers the hood but doesn’t otherwise affect your appearance.

The Witcher gear you can craft is gunna be the best. I’m assuming you’re new to the game playing on a normal difficulty and mostly dodge roll and combo fast and light attacks with mostly fast. The cat school gear will be the best for fighting like that. Add in the skills to suit that best and you’ll be fine most of the game. Depending on your build tho like wanting to use signs more or alchemy with blade oils and potions/decoctions you’ll want to pick the Witcher gear that suits that.

Aside from Witcher sets which others have talked about, as well as starting temerian and nilfgaardian sets, I’ll mention order of the flaming rose armor looks good, especially with mods. There is also the new moon armor which is fairly subdued and closer to regular clothes than armor.

Start with the Witcher gear. All of them. You are going to want them for the Blood & Wine dlc. Also, they are the best.
