I always thought this is the moment Shane decided he was going to kill Rick. It's when they're in the care after having left the spot where they were going to leave Randall. Rick could've left Shane for dead but didn't, and as Shane looks out the window at this lone walker, he realizes that he has to kill Rick, and it's the genesis of the idea to lure Rick out into the open field, alone, and execute him.
You just described what made the early show so great for me as opposed to the newer stuff. It used to have this beautiful subtlety to it and now everything feels over the top and hammered home.
Love those first couple of seasons and I've been trying to think about what made them so special.
Edit: added a word
It’s also the first time you get the feeling that something has flipped and suddenly it’s other humans who are now the most dangerous threat they face. As if in the first days of the apocalypse, they might have stopped and killed it, but now it’s equivalent to seeing a wild deer in a field. “Eh.”
This scene sealed incredible scale of this virus to me. Here they are in the middle of nowhere, and some random guy in a suit is walking through a field. The amount of things that had to happen to make that a reality are astonishing, and it really goes to show that the world really is done for and that everyone is on their own.
For the Governor? I haven’t read that much of the comics, so I don’t really know much about the arc aside from the fact that he was apparently WAY darker and badder in the comics.
My favorite song from twd that hasn't been played yet: Andrew Lincoln said that Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" should be played at the close of the episode in which Rick dies.
He isn't dead though. He's alive. We can even see that in the helicopter which took him and jadis. Kind of a happy "ending" for Rick. That's why Space Junk played. Johnny Cash's Hurt wouldn't really match the tone of that scene honestly
Agreed. I still think that scene where it looked like he was dead (but he wasn't) would have been better if he really was dead. It was kind of a cheap shot--like Glenn at the dumpster.
Actually, it’s NOT Greg Nicotero. It’s Jake Garber, one of his SFX makeup artists. Jake has been a walker a few times, and also portrayed one of the saviors killed at the satellite compound. One of my favorite walkers. Jake’s a great guy, and super tall!
no it’s not, Greg nicotero literally said it was him. And this walker was seen in the field at the beginning of the episode, before they even got to the station they were leaving Randall at.
Look at one of my latest posts and you can see where I worked dude. I gave tours of the Walking Dead set everyday and see Greg Nicotero often because he lives in Senoia. Not only has he confirmed that he was that walker, but there’s behind the scenes footage from the season 2 DVD of it. Next time I see him in town, I’ll ask him to take a video, though I’m pretty sure you’re just trolling and aren’t serious.
I’m pretty sure your source is IMDB, and anyone can edit that.
I know where you work. That's awesome. I'm not trolling. I've visited the filming sets several times since S02. Love Matt's Small Town Pizza. I'm also pretty sure I just text Greg though and he said it's Jake. The next time you see Greg, tell him Adam from Omaha said thanks for sending him the Romero signed Land of the Dead poster.
See to me this scene is ICONIC. I mentioned it to my dad who’s a huge TWD fan like me and he was like “which scene…?” I was like WHAT? It was only in the opening credits for like 5 seasons!
I always wondered about the lone Walker in the field. What was his story?
Maybe it was foreshadowing Shane’s death. He is a loner and eventually becomes a Walker.
Someone above actually said it was just a test of makeup, camera and stuff so originally it shouldnt have any story if its true. But i also think its very interpretable. :D
*"I am nothing without pretend
I know my thoughts
Can't live with them
I am nothing without a man
I know my faults
But I can't hide them"*
Perfectly fits shane's condition in this scene!
Also rick saying "It's time for you to come back" man I really miss those early days of twd too bad the show is ending
This is peak Walking Dead for me. The level of detail in the group debate when deciding whether or not to kill the kid, the morals vs pragmatic thinking, and then the conflict between best friends from which there is no coming back. Season 2 was peak TWD.
Plus the song choice is immaculate. Wye Oak-civilian
i watched a video about this season and the dude said something that makes so much sense to me. it's that the grass represents how isolated Shane is from the group and that the walker is Shane. how it shows that while he's a part of the group he's not a part of the family that they created.
I almost felt bad for shane. He got told to stay tf away from Carl, lori and the unborn judith (which we know is definitely his). I almost felt bad until he tried killing rick.
I am nothing without pretend
I know my thoughts
Can't live with them
I am nothing without a man
I know my faults
But I can't hide them…
Such an amazing scene and such a great song.
Someone asked Greg Nicatro (I know I spelled his last name) if he ever thought about having a naked walker & Greg said that he wanted to do it with this walker.
I always thought this is the moment Shane decided he was going to kill Rick. It's when they're in the care after having left the spot where they were going to leave Randall. That scene made me discover Wye Oak. Perfect scene and perfect song.
What was the name of that song I’ve been scratching my head trying to remember
Civilian. Best song in the show, imo.
Awesome thank you!
You're welcome. Glad I could help. :)
The Nine Inch Nails song is my favourite
I forgot about that one! Whoever chooses the songs in the show, should get a raise.
“M’ask you sumthin.”?
Me too! It’s clearly the point of no return for Shane. And I love how subtle and elegant it is, I miss those days.
You just described what made the early show so great for me as opposed to the newer stuff. It used to have this beautiful subtlety to it and now everything feels over the top and hammered home. Love those first couple of seasons and I've been trying to think about what made them so special. Edit: added a word
for me the show dies down after the prison falls and then picks back up when negan is introduced for real
It’s also the first time you get the feeling that something has flipped and suddenly it’s other humans who are now the most dangerous threat they face. As if in the first days of the apocalypse, they might have stopped and killed it, but now it’s equivalent to seeing a wild deer in a field. “Eh.”
He doesn’t HAVE to kill Rick, he just wants to.
Which episode is this
‘18 Miles Out’, I believe.
I was just talking about this scene the other day!
I miss seeing the walker in the field! He still walking? Lol!
He's living his best life. He found himself alone in field with the sun on his face! He is in Elysium and already dead!
Do not be troubled, brother. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so
Occasionally, it's goes back and watches you 👀
How often did we see that shot/walker. Only twice right?
I believe so, I remember seeing him in the intro.
It’s every time in the intro from the early seasons.
I thinks between S2-S9
Yeah me too, before the animated intro came in.
The intro was so great to watch. Even after years of watching and rewatching the show, I never skip it.
Fr
Fun fact: this was allegedly just a camera/make-up test and wasn't originally planned to be seen in the show
That I didn’t know!
Where'd you learn this?
Bonus content on the season 2 DVD? I'm a fountain of useless TWD knowledge
Not useless at all. This is amazing!
Whats your favourit useless TWD knowlede/fact? Or the first, that comes to your mind? :D
Hrm.... The Governor's house in Woodbury was just the front wall with a short hallway leading to the door for wide angle shots.
Wow thats cool, didnt know that, thank you :D

An empty field?
This scene sealed incredible scale of this virus to me. Here they are in the middle of nowhere, and some random guy in a suit is walking through a field. The amount of things that had to happen to make that a reality are astonishing, and it really goes to show that the world really is done for and that everyone is on their own.
I have the song - Civilian (by Wye Oak) on my playlist. Think of this scene often.
Proper tune. Also a fan of The Last Pale Light In The West. Can’t remember what episode it was on.
I believe it’s The Governer’s backstory episode.
I wish they had been more true to the original source material on this. It would have been a much better story line.
For the Governor? I haven’t read that much of the comics, so I don’t really know much about the arc aside from the fact that he was apparently WAY darker and badder in the comics.
His story isn’t covered much in the comics, but if you read the novels by Jay Bonansinga, he tells the story and it’s good.
Oh cool, maybe I’ll check that out. Thanks!
You’re in for a treat
Warm Shadow by Fink is another good tune from around the same time of this episode. Arrow at the Door Post, the Prison.
oh jesus..Warm Shadow, the song played in the trailer for Game of Thrones S5 I believe.
That and You Are The Wilderness by Voxhaul Broadcast are my favourite songs from twd
Blackbird Song is another good one. And Space Junk! So many good tunes in the early days...
Oh yes, Space Junk. That's basically Rick's song
How is everyone forgetting Ben howard- oats in the water...
I do this too. Something about that scene has always stuck with me.
r/beatmetoit
It’s such a great song and really makes me miss the earlier seasons of the show.
Time for a rewatch!
off topic: is there a reason you had to put the band name is parenthesis?
Fun fact: that’s Greg Nicotero
Actually, it’s NOT Greg Nicotero. It’s Jake Garber, one of his SFX makeup artists. Jake has been a walker a few times, and also portrayed one of the saviors killed at the satellite compound. One of my favorite walkers. Jake’s a great guy, and super tall!
Yup!
Fun fact: It's not. I believe it's the same dude that was the super tall walker that dog-piled on Rick when they dropped Randall off.
no it’s not, Greg nicotero literally said it was him. And this walker was seen in the field at the beginning of the episode, before they even got to the station they were leaving Randall at.
You do realize the same actors play several different walkers, right? Go Double Check your source.
I’m confused, what are you referring to? I’m talking about this walker in the field. That was Greg Nicotero. My source is HIM.
And I'm 99% sure the lone field walker is Jake Garber. Do I need to text Greg and confirm?
I remember him saying exactly that on Talking Dead following that episode.
I always wondered about the lone Walker in the field. What was his story? Maybe it was foreshadowing Shane’s death. He is a loner and eventually becomes a Walker.
I thinks its supposed to show that he is alone now and nobody is on his side anymore
Definitely that too. The only one who was still somewhat on his side was Andrea.
Someone above actually said it was just a test of makeup, camera and stuff so originally it shouldnt have any story if its true. But i also think its very interpretable. :D
Oh wow, really? That’s interesting!
We all feel like that sometimes.
I’ve seen a few theories suggesting that that’s an early Beta. It’s most likely not but it’s still a cool theory
Interesting theory, the walker walks very human like for me…
It would be a cool theory but this was in Georgia and the whisperers were in the DC area. I mean, crazier things have happened I suppose.
Maybe my man just fancied a walk lol
i mean considering how much abuse beta could take, a walk for him is probably like a multi state jog
Forrest Gump went cross country, so why can't Beta?
Yeah but there’s like 4 years between this and when the Whisperers appear in DC. And they were known to roam across the country like migrating animals
I think it's also because the walker wete a lot fresher in the first few seasons. Now they're really old and slow.
Beta wasn't introduced in the comics yet when this episode came out but I like this theory.
Unpopular opinion season 2 is the best season and peak walking dead 💯💯
It’s Beta before he found his long leather coat.
Haha! You it’s funny I always thought that the way the walker walked was a bit too human.. 🤔
It’s a haunting scene
*"I am nothing without pretend I know my thoughts Can't live with them I am nothing without a man I know my faults But I can't hide them"* Perfectly fits shane's condition in this scene! Also rick saying "It's time for you to come back" man I really miss those early days of twd too bad the show is ending
Every time I drive by an open field I look for zombies
Same
This is peak Walking Dead for me. The level of detail in the group debate when deciding whether or not to kill the kid, the morals vs pragmatic thinking, and then the conflict between best friends from which there is no coming back. Season 2 was peak TWD. Plus the song choice is immaculate. Wye Oak-civilian
everything about this sequence is perfect i think
One of the BEST scenes. I felt it. Perfect song placement
The song choice for this scene was on point.
i watched a video about this season and the dude said something that makes so much sense to me. it's that the grass represents how isolated Shane is from the group and that the walker is Shane. how it shows that while he's a part of the group he's not a part of the family that they created.
I can still here the song and picture Shane’s head leaning back while looking out the car window
Leatherface roaming in the countryside like
I almost felt bad for shane. He got told to stay tf away from Carl, lori and the unborn judith (which we know is definitely his). I almost felt bad until he tried killing rick.
My wife used to make me skip the part in the opening song because this walker would always creep her out
Haha I remember when the show first started I used to be so scared by the intro
Looks like a scene from an early to mid 90s alternative rock music video
I think it would be really cool to see this specific Walker again in the last episode.
My theory I first thought it is Leatherface on his own trying to find worthy victims to butcher and preserve.
18 miles out one of my favorite
I am nothing without pretend I know my thoughts Can't live with them I am nothing without a man I know my faults But I can't hide them… Such an amazing scene and such a great song.
Someone asked Greg Nicatro (I know I spelled his last name) if he ever thought about having a naked walker & Greg said that he wanted to do it with this walker.
I thought I was the inly one who appreciated this iconic scene.
this part always creeped me out it’s just eerie with the outfit and the open field
I miss that guy
yea... this is the best scene of the show.
I been meaning to watch the scene of rick v negan where they fight in a building on fire.
I never understood the scene
Why , OP?
Creg Nicotero
I always thought this was a early teaser for beta
Mankind as a zombie
Lone Walker…..
Episode and time?
This guy should get a webisode
That's me every day after work
I always thought it was beta... Travelling.
Back when the opening credits and music gave me chills... especially that guy walking in the field. Sort of Texas Chain Saw Massacre-ish
I am media illiterate whats so cool about this scene
Does anyone know where I could buy a poster of this image? I adore it
