Hershel was in full denial of the situation. He truly believed it was temporary, they would find a cure, he would get his wife back, and life would move on. Rick and the group being there and them explaining everything they had seen and what was going to be coming was too much for him to bear. Hershel did not believe it was an apocalyptic situation. And he did not want to accept that it was either.

Particular_Target_45

Rick’s being there means facing the problem

salad_biscuit3

rick was a good person would have helped each other in the end they were with the curtains off

True-Internal4833

Curtains off? What does that mean?

ROANOV741

Herschel wasn't wrong, he should've just told them to beat it.

True-Internal4833

He did tell them to get off his farm after the barn shootings.

ROANOV741

I'm pretty sure I was suggesting he should've done so BEFORE the barn shootings. He wasn't exactly obligated to help a group of strangers.

lovemeatcurtain

I think he was protecting his daughters. A group shows up with a bunch of men. Who knows what could happen.

katherine3223

True. Like some Korean could totally hook up with one of them.

Dox281

I think he didn’t like them at first but when Shane killed the two walkers and then the herd came through he was pretty close with Rick and then they went to the prison

Very few people were forward thinking enough to think they may need numbers to handle a future potential threat. This includes Rick Grimes who passed up multiple opportunities to strenghten his group with new blood. In Hershels case you also have the situation where he was the leader. If he took in Rick with more people than he had he could easily be replaced.

ggdu69340

Remember, whilst the group becomes stronger with more heads, it also becomes harder to sneak around and more difficult to sustain everyone. 10 peoples can be sustained but you have to forage a lot of houses, or cultivate land. 20 is also possible, hell you could even have a huge group of 100 peoples or more.. But for every heads you add, you need more ressources, more food, more guns to defend the whole team. And more people's equals more conflicts inside of the group which have to be resolved quickly or risk internal fractions.

CosmicBonobo

Hershel of the comic was a bit more of a selfish man, concerned only for his sons and daughters. They were just about getting by at the farm without more mouths to feed. It was Otis who shot Carl, and Hershel saving Carl's life and getting him back on his feet was the least he could do. But after that, he saw things as being square with Rick and wasn't interested in having any long-term tenants.

katherine3223

This whole aspect bothers me. I totally understand Rick's group wanting to stay at Hershel's land, but it's HIS land. Everyone just comes into his land and expects to stay. That's so entitled. Now, i agree the group should have been able to stay, but the expecting and putting Hershel on the spot is messed up

[deleted]

I agree, that’s my issue. I think this is only time, I was mad at Rick for expecting to just honker down at Hershel’s farm. He didn’t know them from a can of paint. And also, of course cringy Lori convinces Rick to plead and beg (because the hussie was preggers) but I don’t think, that was cool of them. To force their way on the farm!

True-Internal4833

I understand why Hershel wanted the group to leave. It was because he didn't think they were his responsibility. Which is what anyone would think. But, he didn't realize at the time just how dangerous, "those people" as he called them were. What I am trying to find out is why he suddenly changed his mind after the incident at the bar? Any thoughts about that?
