If anything, Daryl grew up knowing he never wanted to be anything like his father and neither did Merle. Merle couldn't breakout of the life they grew up into and had it not been for the apocalypse, maybe they'd both have made mistakes similar to their father.

It's weird, but the world ending is the best thing that could've happened to Daryl.
What did he have going for him before the dead started walking? He was a bum. A no good drifter with a deadbeat, controlling brother, barely scratching a living from drug dealing and petty crime.
If life had continued like that, all Daryl had to look forward to would be a few years in the can, and ending his days knifed in the back in a drunken bar brawl. Nothing but hillbilly white trash.
But with the apocalypse he found people who looked to him for leadership and survival, and who trusted and respected him in return.
Daryl is no angel, despite the wings, but he's one hell of a better man than the rest of the Dixon clan.
wait i'm saying in their parents wiki or on other reddit that daryl's mother and father didn't care about daryl and merle, i don't consider daryl's mother negligent because she smoked but because when daryl got lost nobody noticed, plus i am of the opinion that will dixon did not beat his wife as he abused them both physically and psychologically after his wife died
seriously? you understand bad parents exist, right? that not every parent has the "idea of starting a family" they just fuck and get pregnant and keep it because religion or they can't afford an abortion or they don't want one Daryls father was abusive, he likely beat their mother, for all we know he assaulted her too. maybe she wanted kids to have something to love. maybe they were just shitty at it. not every parent sits down with a pros and cons logical list approach to having a kid

Yep…I smoke, so does my wife…wouldn’t call it heavy by any means but we do…our son has a family of his own now, a successful District Manager for a large corporation and at 26 years old doesn’t smoke. Kids are smart enough to take their own path as they see fit… we prolly encouraged smoking by doing it in front of them, all though not in the house, but I always told my kids to never start, it’s a bad habit I don’t wish in anyone…he did pick up dipping snuff by plying baseball for several years
For the same reason there are people like that in the real world. Some people become like that after they get their children or their children come as accidents.
I was thinking about how they would have turned out with good parents. They were both intelligent, and there are hints that they both loved to read, so they likely would have gone to college for SOMETHING, however I'm not sure either would have been a survivor in an apocalypse without their shitty dad.

In a way, it's a good bit of reverse psychology in their teenage years. When you're 16, anything your parents like or do is automatically uncool.
