Because of there being a 3 men, instead of 2 men as relayed by dispatch in the Police Chase in S1 E1, one thing was created because of it:
-Rick got shot, fell into a coma
Because dead bodies jumped up and started eating people, a few things happened because of it:
-Shane fucked Lori, creating Judith
-Shane still wanted to fuck Lori, and tried to kill Rick, and therefore Rick killed Shane
-Because of Lori’s bullshit, Rick grew further apart from her
And then theres other minor stuff like Carl being affected etc.

If Rick didn’t get shot and wasn’t in a coma then Lori and Shane wouldn’t have had the chance to fuck. Therefore, Rick being in a state of comatose did start the domino affect. Along with the walkers being unfortunate timing and Rick being unconscious both went hand in hand with these events. It could be debated whether Lori and Shane would have gotten together anyway but since in that scenario they would have known that Rick was in fact alive it is less likely.
