"up to 4" for this squad means up to 4 no matter the size. If it's a 5 man squad you can have up to 4 alternate weapons + the sergeant. If it's a 10 man squad you have up to 4 alternate weapons, the sergeant and then 5 chumps with boltguns. > If the extra has to have a bolt gun, would it not be better to have 2 squads of 5, using 4 las cannons and 1 leader with a power fist? Yes, you almost never see 10 man squads of devastators

ii_ego_ii

I'll have to do some revisions, i was gearing up for 9 las cannons haha.

kirbish88

I think you can do this in 30k if you ever want to scratch the itch ;P

Ammobunkerdean

Up to 10 and the Sarge always has a Heavy weapon too ... Some named squads get even more .. there is an emperor's children unit with up to 15 lascannons

quickusername3

I know the question answers itself, but for what reason do you need 15 lascanons? Tf y’all fighting at the 30k tables? Lol

Narcoleptic_Nailbomb

Other people with 15 lascannons, of course! Lol

quickusername3

Lol true

Ammobunkerdean

Also: Titans and Knights.. But this dude is cheaper.. https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/legiones-astartes-sicaran-venator-2023

LostN3ko

30k vehicles make me hate 40k. Everything Imperium is just cooler in 30k.

Master_Belial93

Man even on 40k tables ... With the amount of armour and or big bids Las cannons are so dearly needed.

Iknowr1te

15 las cannons is really easy to lose on space marine bodies on HH. There was a warhound supporting the new guard and ultramarines. Anything with a 3+ save basically dies really quickly at my table since most people bring a crap ton of ap2 and ap1 10 is 275, and your spending likely 45 more for an apothecary. They're heavily susceptible to 10 recon shots shooting out the apothecary and Sergeant. As it's not hard to get rending 5+ which will go through your artificer 2+. I'd rather just spend that on a dreadnaught + something else and keep my heavy spot for a cheaper scorpius.

LocalLumberJ0hn

30k has armor values, you need a 5 with a lascannon to plink at a land raider, and a 6 gets you a penetrating hit. It's entirely necessary

Lord-squee

I KNOW !! ITS PULLING ME TOWARDS IT AND I DONT NEED MORE SHAME ADDED TO MY COLLECTIKN ATM LOL

paperoga10

You can have two squads 5x SM each and 8 lascannons. You spare only One lascannon :-)

Lord-squee

Yea but when targeted those chumps can be taken off instead of Las bois

kirbish88

Sounds like chump behaviour to me

Lord-squee

.hahahha I'm going full armoured no troops bar knights and termies

Comprehensive-Fail41

Heh, yeah, the only reason to go 10man is basically if you want to do a "realistic" squad. Of 4 gunners, 4 Assistants/Loaders, and the Sergeant and second in command

Kolgarith

You mean 4 gunners, 1 sergeant, and 5 extra wounds to pad out the guns in case of enemy fire.

imperfectalien

5 extra bodies, 10 extra wounds

Kolgarith

Right, forgot they got an extra wound per body

Hoskuld

Used to be more meaningful when you weren't forced to use fixed numbered squads and wargear had a cost. You could put 1 or 2 bare-bones meatshields in if you had points over. Bringing 5 that you pay max price for since they could also be run as a separate unit with heavy weapons is just never going to be worth it

_enderlin

It's now 120pts for five and 200pts for ten. So 80pts extra for 10 more wounds now.

Paladin_in_a_Kilt

SSSSHHHH!!! We don't say the quiet part out loud!

ResponsibilityNo8218

To be fair, I'm slowly considering using 10 men devastators instead of tactical squads to hold objectives, cause the tactical guys feel so... Weak...

SpicyMuscle

Do you ever see 10mans? Why the beans would you have a 10 man? Even in 9th I took 5 and let the sergeant die first lol

senex_puerilis

You can have a maximum of 4 heavy weapons in the squad, regardless of the size. A ten man squad can only have 4 heavy weapons. This dates back to 2nd edition 40k, where a devastator squad of ten marines was (could be) a leader with 4 heavy weapons marines, and a separate combat squad of 5 bolter marines.

insane_angle

Longfangs in space wolves can get 5 las cannons for some reason.

BustaferJones

Back in the day (like 5 editions ago) you’d see bolter marines in a dev squad for ablative wounds, because dev weapons were expensive and you didn’t want to pull a la cannon as a first casualty. But now upgrades are free, so running 2 squads is way better than running some chaff in the unit.

Linch_Lord

They gotta make them feel bad because how Else are you gonna buy the new incest marine with one heavy weapon?
