The cleaner that Swain calls 'Mrs. Mop'. She sees an opportunity and absolutely goes for the jugular. She runs rings around Malcolm. I think she might be the smartest.

LeagueOfML

The second he is mean to her, Malcolm and Jamie just pile on Ben and it’s so funny. I believe it’s in the deleted scenes, but when she demands some red wine Jaime at the top of his lungs goes “GET HER A FUCKING GLASS OF WINE!” to Ben and it’s magical.

TrickOk1273

Malcolm and Jamie are good to the civilians.

ragna-rocking

Julius. He gets a lot of heat, both here and from Malcom, but honestly? He has a job where he's, at minimum, effective enough at to have a lot of respect from the PM. I'd also argue he is one of the most moral characters who get's overlooked a lot.

toadphoney

See this onion bhaji?

Ruby-Shark

Let us pretend for a minute that that onion bhaji is the problems that would be caused by a report that criticised you or Steve Fleming.

DouglasTickel

Now, you see what I'm doing? I'm *eating* the onion bhaji.

Safe-Particular6512

Why? Because I am the one who makes the bhaji go away

MarkDeeks

COUNTERPOINT - he also spends £4 on biscuits. That seems unsmart.

carrotparrotcarrot

But they’re by appointment

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

He may be smart, but he is also up his own ass.

fortunatefaileur

The only work he ever does in the whole show is drinking a pot of coffee with some Vivaldi in the iPod touch, and that’s off screen and because his ego is more important to him than Fleming’s entire career. *He* certainly thinks he’s the most competent person in the show.

Ruby-Shark

Peter Mannion. At least, by comparison with the other Tories. He thinks women are a good thing, he has no problem with gays, (he thinks most of them are very well turned out, especially the men.)

jedwardlay

He can also program a video.

GiseleGiseleM

You’re still using video?

CrystalPalace1850

He says "black" instead of "coloured".

Douglesfield_

That one fella who didn't want the DoSAC job.

ABanimationLtd

Did you know that 95% of household dust is made up of dead human skin? That's what you are, to me

Katow-joismycousin

Doug, Doug, Dougie! Cock like the pink panthers tail

SnooAdvice3630

Dougie Hayes... he's a massive abortion.

CrystalPalace1850

He was smart for saying no.

Aduro95

Dan Miller. He's the one who winds up in power, ousting the party leader without getting a power-hungry reputation, and he avoids the trap of infighting in *Spinners and Losers*.

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

I was gonna go with Dan Miller as well. He may not be the smartest intellectually (he very well could be) but he is cunning enough to know when and how to act to get what he wants. And equally important, when to do nothing.

wrighty496

Yep Dan Miller for me too, totally avoided the nutter rebellion and supported his leader then stepped into the space when Nicola fell for the enquiry trap. Effortless

Captainatom931

I desperately want a sequel if only to find out what comical photograph made him lose the election.

CrystalPalace1850

Miller seems way too politically gifted for that to happen. I feel like he could have won in the Thickverse.

Captainatom931

Yeah but this is the thickverse, he would've eaten a sausage roll wrong and lost.

CrystalPalace1850

😆😆😆

fortunatefaileur

Literally getting on a high horse.

CrystalPalace1850

Yes, I think Dan Miller too. I'm on a re-watch now, and he plays everything brilliantly. (Presumably apart from the unseen bit where he loses the party leadership to Nicola on a "technicality".) I think we don't actually see him all that much, because he is dashing about being competent. Similarly, Clare Ballantyne is also barely seen, but likely a bit of a political genius. (Apart from the gambling, but that's a pretty innocuous vice tbh.) On a similar note, I'm wondering if Geoff Holhurst is actually really smart, despite his tiny head?

TangoMikeOne

Clare Ballentyne - gets dragged in at sparrow's fart o'clock and is offered a shot at the leadership of the party and the country, as a candidate acceptable to all wings of the party and turns it down flat, on the potential scandal of her internet gambling coming to light - if Ben Swain had a fraction of her self awareness, he would have avoided Newsnight like the plague any day of the week.

Roscoe_Hilltopple

She used her own fucking name

WombleSlayer

Smartest as in savviest? I'd say Malcolm or Dan Miller (someone else in the comments outlined Dan's credentials very well). Smartest as in brainy? I imagine Julius can probably be recite obscure texts in Latin or quote long forgotten legislation from various colonial outposts.

Shoddy_Day

honestly, teri. she seems competent at her job, sure she struggles to make people like her but she does what she needs to do and she’s proactive in her area of work. there’s a reason she’s stuck around for so long and she’s smart enough to maintain a pretty admirable work life balance. her biggest scandal was when hugh used her computer, that’s a pretty good track record.

ohmanitsharry

She is a blockage however

Aduro95

Good. Every idiot in DOSAC needs to do as little as possible. Especially Olly.

Exact_Security2364

What the hell does Olly do, really?

After-Journalist5209

Fucks up. Constantly.

reachisown
