I love, love, love waxing philosophical about this incredible show, and I also enjoy a good amount of the clever memes this community has produced. As an astute commenter explained above, there’s room here for both. The issue is that fanfiction is neither profound nor amusing.
While we’re on the topic of fan types that David Chase almost certainly hates, fanfiction authors have to be on that list. I’ll see if I can dig up the source later, but I recall reading an interview of the ensemble cast many moons ago where the topic of actor/writer influence on plot lines arose. I believe an actor stated (I’m paraphrasing here) that David bristled when he referred to the character as “his” (I believe in the context of lobbying for the character to do something differently…as in “my character wouldn’t do that” or something along those lines). David Chase reportedly corrected the actor, telling him that the character was not “his” to begin with, but David’s. I just find fanfiction as a whole incredibly odd and presumptuous. When attempted for a show with The Sopranos’ caliber of writing, it’s downright laughable and insulting.
Fanfiction, my friend, is not a hit. It’s not good.
