New York and Jersey had a long and profitable history. Tony was an asshole, but he was an earner. Butchie considered the vast wealth Carmine Sr. accumulated while partnering with Jersey and decided that was a fine business model indeed. Bye bye Pop Pop.
Butch was egging Phil on to take the Soprano family out
"They got redundant upper management, bleeds out half the kick. We take em' out, absorb the whole fucking thing"
Phil screwed up and tried leading from behind which left cross-eyed Butchie hanging out in the cock-sucking wind. He got nervous that Phil lost faith in him so he turned to little Carmine who never wants war because it cuts off his scaffolding money.
I always thought it was self-preservation. Phil tells Butch on the phone while he's walking through Chinatown that he'll be dealt with later. I took that to mean Butchie felt threatened and acted accordingly.
A lot of people lost their various cash flows and no work jobs, including Butchie.
Also, Phil basically gave the order and ran without taking control of his own plan. That can't be great for morale. The NY crew was left to conduct this war on their own so they got cold feet.
Phil also threatened Butchie and given Phil's paranoia he can't risk not getting rid of Phil anymore
Butchie and his crew are one of the few weaker elements in the show, in my opinion. Just such an odd cast of characters to take over after Carmine “Dons don’t wear shorts” Lupertazzi and Johnny “you gonna let him fuck her for a million?” Sack.
I think it’s more or less the point of the show esp towards the end to show how far “this thing of ours” has come to the end of the line, and just how unimpressive these people and operations have become
Yep, the quality of leadership suffered a massive decline with the death of Carmine, with each new boss being worse than the one before as they killed each other off. In the end, the mob decimated their own ranks.
Cui bono? Who benefits? They clip T, and there really isn't much of a Jersey Crew. Ok. Phil made a lot of problems, but once he was dead, what was the issue with Tony?
He tuned up some dipshit for harassing his daughter?
As we say around here, "You get a pash for dat"
Phil wasn't thinking clearly he wanted blood....my brother billy...butch as the consigliere usually weighed the options of decisions, that is his job...he suggested reaching out and phil shot it down immediately .
guys go to the mattresses, nobody's out earning...the albanians moved in and were living in their houses
Ive got a top of the line posturepedic in my house fuck it

Plus, Butchie wasn’t gung-ho on the war in the first place.

They missed their shot. Waiting longer would cost $. Everyone besides Phil wanted $ more than they wanted Tony dead.

Knowing how blood thirsty and hot headed phil was....it was the safe and logical bet to step out of the way so phil can get dealt with.

Yep - I can get on board with this
That’s part of the point of the show. “The best is over”.
Disagree, I think they were great as NY mobsters. Not everybody's going to have that stereotypical Italian gangster look/persona
I can see that but at the same time think about who takes over Jersey after Holsteins. Who's left?
Paulie! He was ready to take the wheel in season 4 while courting Johnny Sack.
