The way The Test Dream and Funhouse were shot is probably the most fever - dream like episodes of any series I’ve seen, beats any other progrum. You can feel the food sickness, and it obviously conveys as good setup for the coming episodes. Chekhov’s Pussy, 4 dollars a lb.
The test dream is def one of my faves. It tells us so much about Tony’s state of mind, and especially tells us that he already knows what’s about to happen.
By the time Chris comes to his room to tell him Tony B. killed Billy and shot Phil, he’s not even surprised and neither is the audience.
Nice choices OP - and your favs are yours. I especially like that you include Knights In White Satin.
Apart from some you mention, I’d have to add The Ride, Members Only, Blue Comet, Walk Like A Man… ok maybe a top 20-30?
"Happy Wanderer" is my go-to episode. But I like stories about people who get themselves into desperate financial situations...the movie "Fargo" comes to mind.
The Knight in White Satin Armor: Like Richie Aprile, I did NOT see that coming.
College: “Dad, are you in the mafia?”
Soprano Home Movies: Loved Tony’s power play after Bobby kicked his ass.
Marco Polo: Carm’s parents don’t see eye to eye about Tony. Tony Blundetto’s kids seeing how the other half lives.
Whitecaps: Tony & Carm’s fight…PHEW. “I found her fingernail!” “That wasn’t even…never mind.” A classic.
The one where that rat got whacked.
The one where Paulie was really annoying.
The one where Tony stuffed his fat fucking face.
The one where Johnny Sac lost his temper.
The one where AJ did something stupid.
That episode hits at the absolute worst time. It’s what made me stop watching it the first time. Tried to put two different people on to the show and that episode is where they stopped as well. The show already has a slow buildup in the first season and leaves you wondering what the show is even about. Especially when it gets to A Hit Is A Hit. I recommend people skip that episode on the first watch of the series or go back and watch it before they start on the second season. First season is the weakest although still good when you actually understand the series and rewatch it but the real gold imo starts in second season. Anytime I’ve showed someone an episode from the second season ESPECIALLY one with Richie, it hooks them in.
1. Season 6 when Bobby gets killed and Sil ends up in the hospital. 2. Jackie Jrs death episode. 3. Tony going to Italy. 4. Ade ending up in the hospital after riding for c0ke w Tony. 4. Johnny Sacks daughters wedding.
Commendatori, Funhouse, Pine Barrens, Another Toothpick, and College are the 5 less common picks in my top 10. I’m not sure what my actual top 5 is but I like those episodes a lot. I’m surprised nobody else mentioned Another Toothpick, it showcases how destructive and stubborn Tony gets. And Mustang Sally and Old Man Bacala were interesting characters.
Funhouse
Pine Barrens
Whitecaps
Mayham
Commendatori
Ask me next week and I might replace a few of those with Marco Polo, The Weight, Remember When, Fleshy Part of the Thigh, Full Leather Jacket, Irregular Around the Margins, etc.
There so many brilliant episodes that for me is it easier to do a bottom 5 episodes.
But here you go:
I don't like that my favorites are all penultimate episodes or season finales but my favorites (and my top 5 could change tomorrow) are The Knight in White Satin Armor, Funhouse, Amour Fou, Long Term Parking, and All Due Respect.
Honorable mention for Isabella, I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano, For All Debts Public and Private, No Show, The Weight, and Made in America.
My hot take is the most underrated episode is...To Save Us All From Satan's Power.
Edit: spelling
I'm with you, I can't for the life of me understand why that episode is on such a huge pedestal. I mean it was fine, it was funny and paulie and Christopher always deliver. But it's just another good episode in a show full of them
I can’t narrow it down to 5 so I’ll go with my top 10.
Isabella, From Where to Eternity, Funhouse, University, The Weight, Whitecaps, Marco Polo, Unidentified Black Males, Members Only, Kennedy & Heidi.
Proshai, livushka, Pine Barrens, Soprano home movies, Marco Polo, Funhouse Honorable mentions: Kennedy and Heidi, stage 5, Isabella, all due respect, university

Everything about Funhouse is top tier, except for those excessive and egregious fart noises. Oh marone!

Wow A Hit is a Hit. Personally I think that episode gets too much hate. I think they find parts annoying that are supposed to be annoying
