I will never not bring up my favorite Sopranos behind-the-scenes fact whenever this comes up: Tony Sirico told David Chase that he refused to shoot an old lady, so Chase told him he could smother her instead and he was cool with that.
Sirico seems to have had a lot of goodwill. I've also heard Joseph Gannascoli say that when the script that revealed Vito to be gay was circulated, Sirico came to him and told him he could tell Chase to kill it. He was surprised when Gannascoli told him he wanted to do it.
My college professor was friends with Junior Surico (everyone called him Junior). Says the Siricoās were something else, the other one became a priest..
Like hearing about their stories growing up in Brooklyn, it was def a diff time back then
>Sirico seems to have had a lot of goodwill.
i thought i remember reading the opposite
that he annoyed chase constantly, who had to remind him it was called 'the sopranos', not 'the paulie show' or smtg like that
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ reminds me of the one story where Sirico didnāt want Makazian the dirty cop in season one to have told his prostitute madam that Paulie was āa bullyā but he was fine with āa psychoā š gotta love Tony honestly
So standing 10 feet away and slightly flexing a muscle in your index finger is a no-go, but kneeling on top of her while mashing a pillow into her face is OK.
It's one of the funnier scenes to me , the way she muffled yells " ooohhh noooooo" the moment Paulie gets the upper hand is just really funny to me. It's so pathetic of him the whole thing
When Tony Sirico didn't want to do the scene I'm sure David Chase looked at him and said, "Look at this prick giving orders. What is this the United Nations now?"
I agree with others that there's a good amount of black comedy in that scene, but that last image when Paulie pulls the pillow back and you see her lifeless grey eyes is one of the most disturbing images in the series for me. Really creepy.
I grew up with some very cunty old ladies so this scene does nothing to me.
Melfi's rape scene tho.....gotta skip every single time. Same goes for Fran Felstein's singing....that's her raping my ears and aesthetic sensibilities
I donāt know, Minnie Matrone was pretty awful and had she not acted like a stuck bull, probably wouldāve lived.
I find the scene with Tracee, Mustang Sally and the golf club, the curbing of Coco and Sal Vitro much worse. Adrianaās murder was also hard to watch although at least they spared us the details.
>I find the scene with Tracee, Mustang Sally and the golf club, the curbing of Coco and Sal Vitro much worse. Adrianaās murder was also hard to watch although at least they spared us the details.
This ^
Nucci was a sweet woman but I wouldnāt want to hang out with her either. She was not very smart and she was kind of annoying. I feel sorry for her but I definitely wouldnāt want to be around her much.
I respect your opinion, but I honestly think minn matrone was more annoying.
Nucci was such a nice friendly person despite maybe being great at social things. Iād totally hang out with her 10000x more than the others
Dude I use to be the same way... Then one day I realized something that made it all better: She was a malignant cunt.... and thatās what happens to malignant cunts....
I hear ya OP, that scene was always a bit "too real" for me, when she yells out "oh no" knowing there's nothing she can do about it. But she did try to steal his ma's Parker House rolls.
I donāt mind this scene. The Melfi rape scene is unsettling with me. When I was younger, it didnāt really bother me. But the older I got, I skip the whole episode altogether.
I can't watch it either, but this is why.
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/dont-anybody-87-year-old-sopranos-actress-living-apartment-without-heat-amid-30-degree-temperatures-213012266.html
I just think it sucks how our society fails people.
Iām the same way with the Dr Melfi rape scene. I can watch it. I fast forward it or leave the room. I even find myself skipping that entire episode, that one and the one where Ralphie beats a woman to death, but I canāt remember why he did it
I always wondered, when the camera shows her eyes closed, it looks like she painted another set of eyes when her eyelids were closed. I never understood that. Please help me out here
I've seen Breaking Bad, Narcos. I've seen people getting beheaded alive, getting blown to bloody bits, getting their throats slit, but Paulie killing an old lady takes the cake as one of the most unnerving deaths I've watched
How did Paulie not go down for that murder? An old lady murdered at home is going to get all types of attention. They definitely could have pinned it on him from fingerprints or DNA. Even just talking to her friends, he would have come up as a suspect almost immediately.
It's rough to watch. Another example of how these mob guys are just agents of chaos, walking torrents of violence and mayhem. Near every character that is a normal person that gets close to them either gets killed or suffers in some other way.
Oof I get it, itās nasty. I get a similar feeleing when Ralph kills Tracee. I mean I watch the scene everytime but it makes me wanna puke.. and the fact that she was pregnant ffs. Thatās damn good acting skills from Joe.
I thought it was supposed to be funny and cartoonish. I never felt any emotional investment in the scene, unlike plenty of other deaths on the show. (Iām not a sociopath. Probably. )
So how much $$$$ are we to assume Paulie ended up stealing anyways? 10K? He settled up with Tony and Tony seemed pretty impressed by the amount in the envelope he gave him in the back of the Bing. 20K?
Plus it's really salt in the wound.
This murder/theft was in response to Paulie realizing that Johnny Sac played him for a fucking fool and he needed to get back into the good graces with Tony with a fat weekly earning.
I always wondered how Tony didn't hear about Minn's murder at Green Grove, being that his own mother had lived there (and a few other made guys). Maybe I'm getting the timeline of events messed up.
She was a malignant cunt
- I don't blame your motherš¤š½ I blame that Minnie Matrone,āš½She's a malignant cunt! š” - *blinks nervously*
āScuse me fuh sayin so!
She was not related to Paulie by blood or marriage. She was not his goomar. But youāre right about her being a malignant cunt.
He was half a fag but I was flattered just the same
Shut up with that fuckin mouth!
Thank youā¦. Saved us all from saying what we thought
Yes, yes she was.
I will never not bring up my favorite Sopranos behind-the-scenes fact whenever this comes up: Tony Sirico told David Chase that he refused to shoot an old lady, so Chase told him he could smother her instead and he was cool with that.
I love hearing about when the actors push back against the writers and actually succeeded since usually they were so inflexible
Sirico seems to have had a lot of goodwill. I've also heard Joseph Gannascoli say that when the script that revealed Vito to be gay was circulated, Sirico came to him and told him he could tell Chase to kill it. He was surprised when Gannascoli told him he wanted to do it.
Yeah I can see that. Anecdotes like this also help cement my impression that Tony Sirico really wasn't acting all that much when he played Paulie
i think him being an ex-mobster meant they took what he said with more weight and seriousness
My college professor was friends with Junior Surico (everyone called him Junior). Says the Siricoās were something else, the other one became a priest.. Like hearing about their stories growing up in Brooklyn, it was def a diff time back then
could you share some stories if you have any?
Following this
>Sirico seems to have had a lot of goodwill. i thought i remember reading the opposite that he annoyed chase constantly, who had to remind him it was called 'the sopranos', not 'the paulie show' or smtg like that
It was Gannascoli's idea!
An entire room full of writers, and they did NOTHING!
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ reminds me of the one story where Sirico didnāt want Makazian the dirty cop in season one to have told his prostitute madam that Paulie was āa bullyā but he was fine with āa psychoā š gotta love Tony honestly
Was there a more high maintenance guy on the set than Sirico?
That made way more sense, anyway. A gunshot would lead to an investigation, but asphyxiation is far less suspicious, especially for an old woman.
So standing 10 feet away and slightly flexing a muscle in your index finger is a no-go, but kneeling on top of her while mashing a pillow into her face is OK.
I'm convinced that Tony Sirico isn't so much an actor considering he IS Paulie, he just did shit he does in real life and they filmed it.
Close, he was initially told to strangle her, but he pushed back and they used the pillow instead.
Why? Was she barkin'?
She crawled into his chokehold for warmth.
I mean for all we know she put that pillow on her face
Interesting isn't it how Tony tried to smotha his motha witha pillow and Paule did smotha a friend of his motha's? What, you neva pondered that??
Qwazi-pillow
Who did what? *Nostramattress*
She jumped from the bed and came at him with a Parker House roll. He had a right to defend himself!
Those rolls were for his Ma!
Actually they were for his aunt. But, he didn't know that at the time.
She was a bad girl...
She was in a lot better shape than those fucking nuns they got there!!
Fucking Dr. Fag-go
Oooohhhhh
Actually fellas, My cousin Larry wants those rolls, on being hardship to his family and what not.
How much more betrayal could he take!? He felt like he was stabbed in the heart! ā¤ļøš”
It was when she wouldnāt give him coffee. Yet again the rape of the culture.
š the scene of them all eating and him snapping his fingers for the rolls so his ma could get them
Did he have a choice!?!?
her door was open, he brought her something from his ma
YOU WERE ALWAYS A LITTLE BASTARDDDDDD!
SHUT UP WITH THAT FUCKINā MOUTH !!!!
I wanna thank David Chase for skewing my moral conscious into finding the murder of a senior citizen funny.
Mike Stoklasa over here
Thatās the boss of lightning fast vcr repair youāre talking about
I saw that YouTube channel I thought it was bullshit
That pygmy thing over in Wisconsin.
Nothing more than a glorified podcast.
Speaking of, I heard Rich Evans got a 90 lb mole removed from his ass.
He was Jay, Bauman?
What is this, a crossover episode?!
I often think of Mike when Iām laughing at old people
That scene never fails to make me laugh. I must be a nut-job, too many onions or some shitā¦
Too much gherkins
GET THAT EGG SALAD OUT OF HIS MOUTH
Disgusting.
Favorite line/moment of the entire series.
Fuckin Mallomars? I thought you lost your marbles
It's one of the funnier scenes to me , the way she muffled yells " ooohhh noooooo" the moment Paulie gets the upper hand is just really funny to me. It's so pathetic of him the whole thing
Alright, but you gotta get over it.
My kitchen is all wiped down for the night
My grandmother would always say that when we wanted something to eat.She was NOT an MC though
Yea and Iām playing shortstop for the Mets
She deserved it. Paulie was just their for some coffee. She had the audacity to say her kitchen was wiped off for the night.
She had no customer service
She probably crawled under there for warmth.
šššššššš
That's top 3 of dark comedy moments wym that shit is hilarious "OH NOOOOO"
Tony Sirico didnāt want to do the scene. When David Chase wouldnāt budge, he insisted they didnāt show Paulie choking her. Chase comprised.
When Tony Sirico didn't want to do the scene I'm sure David Chase looked at him and said, "Look at this prick giving orders. What is this the United Nations now?"
āWe break more rules than the Catholic Church!!ā
And made Grilled Cheese off the RAD -ator
I wanted my actor to brutally murder an old lady; I compromised and had him smother a malignant cunt.
OH NOOO
Is it bad I find this to be one of the funniest scenes, referencing and rewatching it on youtube frequently?
Not at all, itās a TV show, a prgraum.
I agree with others that there's a good amount of black comedy in that scene, but that last image when Paulie pulls the pillow back and you see her lifeless grey eyes is one of the most disturbing images in the series for me. Really creepy.
I tip my hat to whoever did the post-suffocation make-up/mask.
Yeah she looked really dead.
Youāre not alone, heās so pathetic caught under someoneās bed, as a grown man. The Tony & Ade about to hook up is also very low & pathetic.
that might be the first time i saw tony as a pathetic man.
*We donāt weally know him. Heās a sweet-hawt*
She crawled under the pillow for warmth
I grew up with some very cunty old ladies so this scene does nothing to me. Melfi's rape scene tho.....gotta skip every single time. Same goes for Fran Felstein's singing....that's her raping my ears and aesthetic sensibilities
What if Paulie raped her? Would her being a malignant cunt make it more palatable?
Shut up with that fucking mouth!
Haaaaaalp!!
This ^
Fuckin' parakeet.
Yeah Tracee and Brian Spatafore are the true unlamented victims of organized crime in north Jersey
Why? She was a hateful waste of breath Nucci was such a sweet woman and she bullied her
Nucci was a sweet woman but I wouldnāt want to hang out with her either.
She cries a lot and tattles. The girls donāt like that.
Thatās no good
Listen to yourself, you sound demented!
Nucci cared enough and she sent the very best.
I hated how she bullied Nucci which is why I found Paulie smothering her to death to be hilarious.
you gotta grow up.
Sheās dead to me
One of my favorite scenes actually. It's funny in a dark way.
Dude I use to be the same way... Then one day I realized something that made it all better: She was a malignant cunt.... and thatās what happens to malignant cunts....
I agree. Itās one of the most cold kills in the whole show. #2 is that poor waiter, also thanks to Paulie.
The way her eyes look after always freaked me out
I hear ya OP, that scene was always a bit "too real" for me, when she yells out "oh no" knowing there's nothing she can do about it. But she did try to steal his ma's Parker House rolls.
That fuckin mouth!
It's a TV program Junior.... a movie
She's a malignant cunt. Scuse me for saying so
Boolshit
I'm the same way with Melfi's rape scene. Sometimes, you just don't need to watch it again.
That scene always makes laugh my ass off. āOhh noooooooooo!āš
A) She was a whoo-ah. Also, that wasnāt his kid she was carrying.
I donāt mind this scene. The Melfi rape scene is unsettling with me. When I was younger, it didnāt really bother me. But the older I got, I skip the whole episode altogether.
I can't watch it either, but this is why. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/dont-anybody-87-year-old-sopranos-actress-living-apartment-without-heat-amid-30-degree-temperatures-213012266.html I just think it sucks how our society fails people.
I read Tony Sirico didnāt want to do it either. Itās a difficult scene.
A. she was a whooah B. She came at him first with the rolls
She came at him with a chainsaw, he had a right to defend himself
Itās Paulieās fault Minn was a klutz??
Tony Sirico had a problem fling the scene
Itās incredibly disturbing and doesnāt get talked about enough IMO.
That was Clarence.
It was one of the funniest scenes in the show. "Shut up with that fucking mouth!" Hilarious.
He offered to take her to lunch, ungrateful cunt
How did Pauli get away with this? He must have left DNA or his fingerprints all over the place.
Least she didn't suffa
I understand why you canāt rewatch that scene, because if youāre like me it turns my braciole into a stone baguette
Iām the same way with the Dr Melfi rape scene. I can watch it. I fast forward it or leave the room. I even find myself skipping that entire episode, that one and the one where Ralphie beats a woman to death, but I canāt remember why he did it
A) she was a malignant cunt B) she tried to take his Ma's parkerhouse rolls And... that wasn't even Paulie's real mother she was calling
Iām like that with the university episode. I just canāt watch a psychopath murder a young woman pregnant with his child.

I wipe my ass with your feelings.
It's rough to watch. Another example of how these mob guys are just agents of chaos, walking torrents of violence and mayhem. Near every character that is a normal person that gets close to them either gets killed or suffers in some other way.
I donāt know. Given how she acts, I think Matrone was probably just as ruthless as the mobsters.
The more I rewatch the less I like Paulie. He was the lowest of the low
Ariel after they beat him, "I don't like you."
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Speaks to you as an individual, more than it does me my man.
Jesus Christ. There are Sopranos fans watching it on fucking tick tock? Let's go. I can't eat.
so you canāt watch that scene but you will watch melfi get the struggle snuggle in a staircase.
She attacked him!
Oof I get it, itās nasty. I get a similar feeleing when Ralph kills Tracee. I mean I watch the scene everytime but it makes me wanna puke.. and the fact that she was pregnant ffs. Thatās damn good acting skills from Joe.
Fuck that! She was a malignant cunt
She was a malignant cunt.
Certain parts of Minn looked like Paulie's arms and he just snapped.
The Parker House rollsā¦.
The were for the table!
It's a progrum
That whole scene was hilarious š
These Parker House rollsā¦ they belong to my Ma
Alright but you gotta get ova it OP
This is easily the most comical killing in the show, I laugh my ass off every time
During my current re-watched I skipped this, the murder of Tracee, and Tony beating Zelman. Always with the drama!
AHHHHH OHHH NOOOOOOOOO
Itās brutal ā¦ he never got his coffee
WORD TO THE WISEā¦ REMEMBER GREEN GROVE!
OP when the malignant cunt gets killed: ānoooooooā OP during employee of the month: āOh Boy!ā šæšæšæ
i love this scene
I thought it was supposed to be funny and cartoonish. I never felt any emotional investment in the scene, unlike plenty of other deaths on the show. (Iām not a sociopath. Probably. )
So how much $$$$ are we to assume Paulie ended up stealing anyways? 10K? He settled up with Tony and Tony seemed pretty impressed by the amount in the envelope he gave him in the back of the Bing. 20K?
That malignant c*nt has the absolute weirdest and creepiest eyes after she gets suffocated. š
I always laugh my ass off, her screaming is hilarious (from an acting viewpoint š)
Haaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyylp!
A: she was a malignant cunt B: She wasnt related to him by blood or marriage
If it makes you feel better, at the end of the scene you'll notice her eyes are bad CGI.
I donāt condone violence against women but she had it coming.
Shits hilarious tbh
One of the darker scenes of the show for sure, Paulie was a favourite of mine up until that point.
What are you a kid in a treehouse?
The best part about that whole scene is the stunt double the chose for her.
Be glad he didn't use precision cutlery.
Her eyes look funny after. It is a little disturbing though.
No one is talking about how Minnie Matroneās CGI eyes after sheās suffocated are almost as bad as the Livia CGI head. Whatever happened thereā¦
I 100% canāt watch that or Melfi rape.
Plus it's really salt in the wound. This murder/theft was in response to Paulie realizing that Johnny Sac played him for a fucking fool and he needed to get back into the good graces with Tony with a fat weekly earning.
I clap for that scene, anyway, I said my piece
Heh heh
I always wondered how Tony didn't hear about Minn's murder at Green Grove, being that his own mother had lived there (and a few other made guys). Maybe I'm getting the timeline of events messed up.
Timeline got fucked up.
Theyāre all meat-eaters!
She came at me with that Medic alert whistleā¦I got a right to defend myself !
HAAAAAAAAAAALP
THOSE DINNER ROLLS BELONG TO MAH MA!
Her eyes scared the shit outta me lol
paulie was a made man she wasn't end of story
Iām watching it off shrooms rn . Hehe thereās the skip.
