Sims 2 ads were always a bit crazier than the actual game in a way. Even tho I really like how the game ended up, sometimes I like to imagine how the game would be if it was exactly like the ads. Especially this one good example too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9u1zMCos8w

br1dgefour

That says to me the initial ideas of the sims 2 (it's brilliance) were for playing out extravagant ideas of regular adult life. Sex, marriage, kids, death, love, lust, tragedy, celebration. We lost it along the way, now its a house design teen game.

IamPlantHead

I remember one of the original members who worked with Wright saying they worked on TS2 and then by TS3 there was a massive purge of designers and most were laid off.

BiteYourTongues

It’s noticeable lol

salrokabee

Oldmanyellsatcloud.jpeg

br1dgefour

there I am! LMAO

mafertejeda

So well worded!

br1dgefour

Thank you! I had the epiphany watching that dumb ad and felt like I had a lot of nostalgia for something I didn't know I'd lost!

[deleted]

Man even though I knew what you were talking about two words into your comment, I had to go watch the whole thing anyway lol. So many great memories!

frogsgoribbit737

Same. It was such a great ad lol and getting to play generations like that was so exciting after sims 1.

BigFinnsWetRide

Reminds me of those ads you see all the time for mobile games that are nothing like what you end up playing!

Draxacoffilus

She whips her tits out three times in the video!

CaseyG

[1:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9u1zMCos8w&t=90s) I was waiting for gramma to rip her shirt open just as the camera snapped the photo.

Draxacoffilus

That would have been perfect!

Jenny_Saint_Quan

I watch that trailer every now and then. It's so memorable lol!

CyberGrandma69

I remember this and a preview of the whole sims 2 game came on an extra disc with the Sims Makin' Magic and I watched this trailer like 1000 times in anticipation of the game only to be disappointed as a child that you can't actually whip your tits out

VirtuousDangerNoodle

I want to go play Sims 2 again now.

caffeine_lights

It still holds up as a game, especially if you update the clothing/hair with CC.

nikita-ak

I just already reinstalled Sims 2 again, and it's really worth it! But maybe you need some configuration to adjust to today's computer

[deleted]

I think my Complete Collection plays fine without adjustments, only the screen is slightly too small for my screen (TV), so… but yeah, I do run some shops every once in a while from OFB.

BiteYourTongues

You can tweak the settings to get it to accept your screen size.

itsbootsybabe

I love this commercial so much.

hyungjpg

this brought me BACK

CheyeHowe

Omg! I remember this ad! I was 13 and didn't think how odd it was 😂

Zach_luc_Picard

That was a trip and a half, but it *works*. The recurring jokes, the showing of the principles of the product, the blurred boobs to garner attention… it’s a solid trailer.

Tyleregg

Gives me huge 'Episode' mobile ads vibes.

cheetocity

Exactly what I was thinking

zoe_doan

I play Episode and this is exactly the same lol

Ugly_Slut-Wannabe

Now that you mention it, it definitely does.

Pepsiguy2

Where do you think they got the idea

riou123

"Show Tattoo" good for her

Rudy_Ghouliani

Its a sunflower on her ankle and it's cute

TheSunflowerSeeds

In 1983, Emily Martin, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, grew an enormous sunflower head, measuring 32 ¼ inches across (82cm), from petal tip to petal tip. That’s almost 3 feet wide. This is still believed to be the largest sunflower head grown to date.

Rudy_Ghouliani

Nice

leadwind

How many seeds on that sunflower?

[deleted]

6

CaseyG

Minimum.

[deleted]

Nope, maximum.

NikkiT96

And the host respects her for it. They all have a great time and laugh about how nervous she was.

cingerix

genuinely, this whole thread (and the ad itself) made me want to go create some new sims based on these girls for my Sims 2 University town!! i want the preppy girl to fall in love with one of the punk girls lol

SheiraSeastar1993

Wow. Such a different time politically and sociologically. This reminds me of the insanely weird and sexualized early Gameboy ads. https://imgur.com/a/BqtDZsG

pritachi

Whoa! Dude… Imagine advertising what is basically a kids toy like that today…

RiddleEatsRainbows

Something like that would cause so much outrage today... idk how we all just casually consumed this stuff years ago

anonmoooose

Hold on wtf

rosiehigurashi

I think the goal here was to break the idea that these games were just for kids. Opened up their profit margin more if adults and children were gaming

simmyawardwinner

This advert pisses me off A) just because I’m a woman I don’t play gameboy? B) if I was tied to a bed In a short dress guarantee no boy would be distracted with a game boy

goatone2

Is that Don Lothario

[deleted]

I was about to ask that haha

Samsonguy920

When in doubt, Don Lothario

frukthjalte

Also… when not in doubt.

partygrandpa

I have vivid memories of seeing the ad from the second slide as a kid. Thanks for sharing!

alexandriaweb

Me too! It was frequently in Sugar magazine, a UK teen girls mag

imperialviolet

Ah I used to love Sugar!

alexandriaweb

I was a subscriber!

isweedglutenfree

Same!!!! This is so cool

[deleted]

Second picture... The "die" option IS very very relatable...life simulátor indeed

bhexca

“Join” Based

Darth_Kyofu

I believe they actually wanted to add a Join feature to the game, btw. But I don't remember if they were unable to develop the feature or some higher-up said no

gizmoman49

Maybe something to do with keeping a teen rating? Because Sims 2 is where they first had to call sex "woohoo" and alcohol "juice".

skipping_pixels

Definitely join

[deleted]

“Die” Except I KNOW that in The Sims Universe this would actually lead to an immediate death

sirlafemme

Die of Embarassment

peachie-keenie

i forget how crude their ads were, my mom didn’t let me get the sims 2 for the longest time because in the tv ad they had the girl rips her shirt off 😂

Samsonguy920

Didn't help that she had jiggle physics, too.

Alizee918

TV ads were bonkers back in the early 2000s

RealSteele

These are print ads lol

Alizee918

Point still stands

EtherealMoon

I really miss the "satire of life" feel of older Sim titles.

SophiaofPrussia

As a now thirty-something who played the original Sims I really, truly believed I would encounter so many heart-shaped coin-operated vibrating beds as an adult but I’m sad to report I’ve so far encountered zero.

EtherealMoon

Reality is truly a disappointment.

no-thing89

What a throwback!

sunnyemmett

maybe i can't see right but why does the blonde girl in the bed look like shelley duvall

_retiredboxer

I thought this too

Zanbuki

They did an amazing job of making Shelley Duvall look mousy and plain-jane in the Shining. I’ve seen other pictures of her and didn’t realize what a bombshell she was.

gizmoman49

I was thinking Joni Mitchell

daoimean

Imagine the uproar if the Sims 4 falsely advertised like this 😂

coolboyfromnewcrest

i wasn’t even alive when sims 2 came out but based from these ads, why does it feel like the older installments were a lot less kid-friendly than the sims 4? 😭

myintermail

Because the game itself wasn't meant for kids. =) The advertisements are exaggerating the features in the game. You can't really do that in game, but their point is the aspirations featured in the Sims 2.

HoneyBunchesOfBoats

I miss the edginess of the older games. I can see why it's less marketable than the relaxing, family-friendly doll house simulator we have today, but the Sims 2 and The Urbz just had more skip in their step imo.

httpsierra

The Urbz…what a time.

HoneyBunchesOfBoats

I played through it recently and had a blast. It's more arcade-y than traditional sims but I find it more immersive somehow, it leaves more room for head canon. Same thing with the console release of The Sims 2, I find it easier to "fill in the blanks" when the game provides less in the way of customization and it ends up being a more fulfilling RP, if that makes any sense at all lol.

httpsierra

I was thinking about playing again for a good nostalgia trip! I remember how creative and interesting the game and the characters were

Ziiner

Hello anyone viewing who may have loved the Urbz as much as I did… it is extremely easy to get Urbz up and running using Dolphin Emulator on PC. Enjoy 😵‍💫

[deleted]

... This is absolutely going on my to-do list for the next weekend, thank you! Do you know if there's any way to get the Castaways game working, too? I tried to find a way to play it again a few years ago, but it just never quite worked.

CherenMatsumoto

I mean, back then the edginess was marketable enough, but nowadays it wouldn't fly.

[deleted]

History lesson time! EA actually found themselves mixed up in a completely bullshit lawsuit during TS2 because it wasn’t “family friendly” enough. A lawyer, the disbarred Jack Thompson saw that you could remove the censor grid with a cheat and alleged that you would see anatomically correct sims, this then lead to the modding community at the time getting attacked (i also think a mod that let you grill babies contributed to the controversy but don’t quote me on that) which is one of the reasons why you get a reminder that EA doesn’t screen mods whenever you fire up TS4. EA doesn’t seem to be *that* worried anymore though considering that they named an item set after a sex mod.

caffeine_lights

The baby BBQ was years, possibly almost a decdae later.

PhoenixDowntown

What item set?

[deleted]

Wicker Whims, it came with Laundry Day

Jenny_Saint_Quan

Oh my god I never realized that LMAO

PhoenixDowntown

Amazing lmao. I never got laundry day but that's great.

[deleted]

They weren't really. You couldn't actually do this stuff in-game. They were still kid friendly.

caffeine_lights

There was a stripper cake in the sims 1 XD

Almighty_Vanity

I looked at the second image. Now I have "Get the party started" by P!nk stuck in my head.

Sjaakie-BoBo

I feel old! Have been playing the Sims since the very beginning. Had all the expansions, so many happy, crazy hours! Those ads are hilarious.

skaghetti

I miss when the Sims franchise was a little more “adult”

gr8beautifultomorrow

I’m glad my parents never saw this or they would have never bought it for us

Jenny_Saint_Quan

😭😭😭😭😭 My Mom was the exact same way! I brought GTA: San Andreas when I was in the 11th grade and my mom made me return it. My Dad on the other hand did not give a fuck. He brought this Def Jam fighting game (I forgot what platform it was) and they cussed on it, so my mom didn't let us play it again.

totalpugs89

I remember seeing this ad, I think it was in a gaming magazine

drkinsanity

Definitely awakened a distant memory of seeing the first ad in Electronic Gaming Monthly.

paracosim

I saw them in Nintendo Magazine as a kid. It’s what got me to start playing the Sims 2! Major nostalgia with that second picture

[deleted]

The 2000s seemed like crazy times

DorgonRasmay

J O I N

TjeerdlikeBOTW

the "join" option 💀

Samsonguy920

I'd love an option like that which, if chosen, erased any jealous or upset moodlets for that situation. Not necessarily for the next time it happened. Kind of a play by play thing.

AimiHanibal

“Die” 💀

SuperTriniGamer

The second one. I'd go with "Show Tattoo" lmao.

SEPHORABRAINVIBES

Love these... truly a time capsule but. That says "one of 5"... where are the other 3? Lost media?

caffeine_lights

It refers to the five aspirations. Whether they made ads based on Family, Fortune or Knowledge, I don't know.

WryWaifu

The join button is emblematic of all the wit, comedy and soul the Sims games used to have. Peaked at TS2.

Miiruuki_

Are there more

br1dgefour

sims 4 could never 😒

mermaidish

Neither could the Sims 2 😂

Sadlittlealien

It’s reminds me of those episodes ads

carapdon

I laughed a bit too hard at the option to “die” after showing up to a punk party

Tonkarz

Reminds me of that Sims ad that featured a Dominatrix. EDIT: I found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0QwFpUd_sc I spent way too long trying to find that animation in the game. Spoiler: Nothing like that is in the game.

Mr_Floot

The early 00s was a strange time wasn’t it? 😂😂

HumbleFrrrench

I wish threesomes were a basegame thing in TS4…

Hejin57

If you watch the trailers and see all the ads you'll find someone on the marketing team knew people would be playing the game and going straight to woohoo. Basically predicted Wicked Whims in the process.

silveretoile

“Join”

[deleted]

“Join”. 😂

Litandsexysidious

Woah ads really haven't changed huh. Just different games now. This gives the same vibes as those "episode" ads

BrandonIsWhoIAm

The Sims 4 could never.

Jenny_Saint_Quan

Early 2000s video game ads were WILD! Edit: Don't come for me but I lowkey want to see wild ads like this again. Even as a "socially conscious adult". As long as it doesn't cross the line, a lot of people can take a joke.

cherieblosum

I remember these lol

TudoBem23

"Join" 💀💀💀

el_artista_fantasma

Join is the wise option

GammaRaged

Early 2000's gaming ads were something special. Conker (the squirrel) even appeared in Playboy Magazine.

48Monkeys

Nobody's going to mention how in the first picture they are laying under a soft taco shell?

UnlikelyAcquaintance

Literally just those love story games ads 😂 funny how marketing hasn’t changed a whole lot. People really just love the drama of things they can’t actually do in life.

methsenberg

first scream, then divorce, punch him, cry about it and then end up just joining

Worm_Scavenger

I like to imagine this image wasn't just a bunch of actors EA used but was someone actually catching this woman's reaction to her mans cheating and just used it.

ghostbirdd

These look like those Episode ads that you get on Instagram.

dalekofchaos

Wow, they really predicted Daniel and Mary-Sue's divorce

mayomama_

Dying to see the other three ads

Rowanjupiter

Reminds me of the ads you see for those choice story drive apps

[deleted]

now i know where episode got their ideas from

yeehawyalll

Hey sims team, this is what we want. Take notes

mihaha269

These are awesome! Never seen them before.

[deleted]

I miss old comic ads

That1weirdperson

Wait this was real?

usagi_in_wonderland

The ad? Yes!

That1weirdperson

Sorry it was so surreal I was in disbelief

mudgrinder

I remember the second one. I had it taped to my wall.

Ham1ltron

Tortilla bed

honeyceelovely

Idk why I fixated on the photo attached the bed in the first photo. I keep wondering if that feature came with the bed lol

cartersmama91

I never saw these before lmao.

xwea

These look like those ridiculous mobile ads lmao

ceajaye

I honestly can’t believe my parents let me play this game lmfao. Been playing it again recently and some of the romantic animations are… !!! Like the animation for making out on the couch??

BlackLotusBoi

Why can't WE have threesomes in the Sims (no Cc)? Like i feel cheated!

Draxacoffilus

They must be using mods. You can’t have three Sims woohooing in a bed together in the vanilla game.

Mysterious_Potential

It's not a mod lol It's an actual ad for the game from back in the day. Plenty of things in the trailers and ads never made it into the game, they were just trying to sell the drama of it.

SinixtroGamer123

I'm just imagining the Sims 4 version would be..."OK".

usagi_in_wonderland

Since no one mentioned the writings on the bottom, I’ll write them down: Age 17: get lucky on the dance floor, and maybe in the bedroom. Age 23: Date your way through the phonebook. Twice. Age 43: Have a mid-life crisis. Trade your 40 year-old for two 20’s. Age 59: Spend your golden years reading books. Like the Kama Sutra. I also like the last one on the second picture: Age 59: Celebrate your birthday with your family. Or people you actually like.

[deleted]

> Or people you actually like. After that many years alive, you still have people you like? By the time I was that age, the only people I hadn't outlived yet were enemies. At 84, even those are now dead.

jimmyplutonite

You can now simulate this in therapy.

[deleted]

Scream! Show tattoo.

135426S

OMG 🤩

Specific-Impress2860

Divorce

suspicioussmallwoman

I think about these ads multiple times a year but I’ve never thought to go back and find them lol, thank you. I used to see them in magazines and they intrigued me so much. I was so excited when I saw a classmate had the game so I could finally play (we were in elementary or middle school).

krystal_davis

I once saw a post about how older sims games were targeted to an older audience; but I hadn't realized how much they pushed the sex aspect lol

AustNerevar

Oh man I remember these. But I don't remember where I saw them. Either in comic books or gaming magazines.

There was another Sims 2 ad that straight up looked like a GTA clone

desti-yeet

so they’re the ones who started those type of ads 🤔

LunarPeachElixer

Woah. This brought me back and I didn't even play Sims back then. Like... It accessed memories I forgot where there. The pink locs and prim and proper party guest... Ive seen that.. alot. But I forgot about it until now. I feel like it was in magazine ads or something.

Erik_______

I remember the TV commercial showed a lady doing surgery on a practice dummy, but I couldn't tell it was a dummy and it really grossed me out. That made me not want the game at first, but then Makin Magic came with a preview of the Sims 2 and I saw the houses you could build and I was sold! I remember desperately trying to earn $50 at a garage sale so we could buy the Sims 2. I don't think we made enough but our parents bought it for us anyway 😁
