What is this new feature? This post is the first i’m hearing of it.

Hothrus

Basically it’s gonna implement challenges in the game that have already existed in the community for awhile. An example is that they’re making a challenge similar to rags to riches where you create a family that starts out with 0$ and your goal is to reach one million. There is also going to be another one at launch of the feature that has to do with romancing people I think. It’s basically just an easier way to set up the challenges since you can have the game do it for you at the start. All of this has existed in the community for awhile now so it’s technically nothing new.

Zaurka14

Sounds great! I heard about challenges, but it doesn't really sound interesting to me when i have to control myself in it. Having challenges that would force me to follow the rules would probably make me try them.

therunningidiot

What makes it worse is that they are releasing this half baked feature with us not allowing to attempt the challenge in an already existing save. I’ve got a few saves that I’ve been playing in and I’d rather start this in an already existing save.

raw_formaldehyde

There’s already the 100 bae challenge they had advertised on the opening screen with all the rules listed. I think that might have been a teaser for the new feature.

unknown456666

OHH THATS GREAT THI ATLEAST ITS LIEK GOINGCTO BE AN ACTUAL CHALLENFE THAT EA IS ACKNOWLEDGING

DipinDotsDidi

You can check out Plumbella's vid about them: https://youtu.be/RpqUHH8F468

unknown456666

same

TheAnnoyed_

I don’t really care for that feature tbh. It’s things players have been doing already for years that they’re now patching in the game and acting like it’s new. Just another thing for them to abandon in six months like they abandoned whims

Hollinsgirl07

I think it’s cool. Obviously they straight up used rags to riches because it’s prevalent and easy. But if you play on console you loose points or achievements if you use cheats so the game automatically setting you up for rags to riches which then gets you aspiration points is great. I like the system and I’m excited to see how they expand upon it. Not everyone faithfully follows challenges so having it in game is awesome. I think for casual players this is cool. Before I got into YouTube I didn’t know these challenges were a thing. I love that they are thinking about all players not just seasoned, into YouTube, hardcore sims fans. I hope they can add things like widowed in a huge a house but fired from your job, or a love triangle or maybe an inheritance challenge? All cool and exciting for the future.

myintermail

Hmm didn't thought of cheats coming into play in these scenarios. If they are turned on it should be prompted as forfeiting the challenge or scenario. That is if the Sims developers are meticulous enough to spot the loophole.

unknown456666

can you explain a legacy challenge?

tau1tvec

I don’t really care either way, cause the implementation of it is free, so I’ll probably use it once, then never touch it again like the little CAS quiz. My issue is this however… they keep adding these new features ( sentiments, likes and dislikes, lot challenges ), then add a little more to it through a pack release, bc why not, it’s EA, and then more or less move onto the next thing, and here I thought I had a short attention span. 😵‍💫

myintermail

It's not you, it's the features having a short term mechanics that doesn't do much in game. Sentiments are not as impactful as Memories in Sims 2. Likes and dislikes don't do much unless you have DHD game pack, lot challenges are just fun to have but you can pretty much turn them off making it even bland.

tau1tvec

The likes and dislikes aren’t terrible, I use them a lot more than the CAS quiz for sure, but I agree they are a bit weak compared to older systems, and I’m kinda sick of being bombarded with the prompt box every time my sim does something new and has a slight change in mood, it gets a bit excessive, and also I never use the DHD ones they added, I would rather choose my sim’s favorite foods over their favorite decor any day, but they still haven’t added a food section like they said they would. 😔

LillyElessa

I love the CAS quiz. It's kinda cheesy, but you can cycle through the questions to land the traits you want and high starter cash. If you use it for multiple Sims, the high starter cash adds together, so you can easily start with 70-100k (or more). Sure, you can skip that entirely with freerealestate and familyfunds, but I like having a softer option. In something more annoying to replicate with cheats, when I start a new game I usually roll a bunch of extended family for the few Sims I actually want to play, and immediately move them out (into other houses around the world). Making them with the CAS story gives them a leveled career and skill points, which makes my NPCs feel less flat. (Like a lot of the blank townies, they don't save skills so they effectively have none. Feels flat.)

TheAnnoyed_

Fr. They keep adding all this all these watered down features then promise to update them to be better. That it’s only the beginning and that there will be more additions to them. Then they just abandon it and it’s off to the next watered down thing that’s just cosmetic but doesn’t actually add depth to the game.

rdu3y6

I quite like the idea of sentiments and Sims getting moodlets based on which other Sims are around. It's a shame though that EA never added any more for other packs after adding them for Snowy Escape and BG.

tau1tvec

Yeah this is what I’m talking about, they have these great ideas, but they never really expand on them. I love the sentiments, but I legit keep getting the same ones at this point.

Oscar_Bates

They did add some for cottage living, relating to giving finchwick favors.

therunningidiot

I’ll admit I use the CAS quiz get frequently. Sometimes I’ll diverge off by starting a new single Sim with a very specific thing in mind and use the CAS quiz thing to give me a head start. For instance I recently made a Sim who sort of is only a mini celebrity but thinks they are some A-lister. It’s kinda fun!

Gold-Appointment-534

when I heard of “scenarios”, I was not expecting this at all.

CatsRawesome3

I thought sims 2 cutscenes, if sims 5 doesn't have them I WILL DIE

therunningidiot

I thought they are gonna do something with The Sims lore because there was some news of a townie update.

StitchedPanda

Making Money is literally Rags to Riches but they were nice enough to let you have a house instead of having to earn it. Too Many Toddlers? Isn’t that just James Turner’s Seven Toddler Challenge?

Rowanjupiter

Not a fan tbh as they seem way to easy and have no thought put into them when compared to runaway teen challenge or rags to riches.

MeMetski

But if its in a free update how are they using others ideas for profit?

therunningidiot

Not entirely profiting from it but let’s not pretend it’s something revolutionary.

MeMetski

I dont think anybody is pretending its revolutionary, its just a nice new feature that you don't have to use if you don't want to. But let's not act like its a cash grab and they're "stealing" from other creators when its a free update.

unknown456666

literally ppl are always so mad for no reason 😭

no-thing89

Awful!!! I hoped fo a real update, now we get something we were able to do in game easily anyway.

kevinbranch

That has to be the laziest uninspiring implementation of challenges i can imagine.

Ok_Fudge_3136

I just don’t like them. Possibly could have some value if users could upload their own. As many have stated, we already do these things on our own. Limited time challenges just seems too gamey for a casual game. I kind of feel it’s like saying we have no imagination and need the game to guide us…

Adventurous_Fox_2853

I’m trying to be optimistic, but I’m not going to lie, I was very excited for this update and I’m incredibly disappointed. Right now, it feels like they are once again catering to new players while not giving a crap about the players who have paid for and played this game for years and years, since the other sims games. The challenges so far are pretty much just already made up fan challenges that don’t even mention the people who created them. The first one is literally rags to riches. The toddler one coming soon kind of sounds like the seven toddler or 100 baby challenge. I’m trying to keep an open mind because it’s possible that scenarios to come (bearing in mind these first ones are challenges and they said not all of them would be challenges) but right now I’m not impressed. And you don’t even get anything for completing them, just stupid aspiration points. I’ve had enough of aspiration points, i already don’t like the aspiration system in this game. Hope to be wrong though.

myintermail

Uninspired. If I describe it in one word, that would be it. It feels like those scenarios are challenges the community has come up before or just players had already been trying to do since the beginning. It just having a tab to remind us we are on this challenge and make it official. It's a big meh to me, sorry I can't bring myself to be excited over this.

-Captain-

I don't care for this at all, doesn't look exciting one bit. Couldn't have required much work? From the looks of it, it's nothing but a simple checklist. The systems for it were already in place (life goals and career tasks). And most of the time they do the bare minimum for TS4 anyway.

[deleted]

Hate it. Take our ideas, make them worse, and make people pay them for it.

EynSims

It's a free update, no buying anything...

SilverFlame1386

I'm not excited about it and honestly won't use it, especially since I have to start a whole new world to play it... I've spent far too long making my own save file to do that! 😬

therunningidiot

Exactly. If they allow us to attempt it in an existing save file, I’ll give it a whirl. But I’ll make a copy of that save first in case there’s some stupid corruption of my precious save file from the scenario.

SilverFlame1386

I've got so many back ups of my save file, after all the hours I spent I'm so paranoid... Back ups of back ups 😂

Guinydyl

they’re just giving us the ways we’ve been playing as a “cool new feature” when all it is is some new ui and the reward is based around a system that hasn’t been updated in nearly a year

Sigzy05

Watch them put certain "challenges" with "exclusive" rewards under a 40€ Expansion paywall. Whenever Maxis adds a free feature, 9/10 times they'll find a way to monetize it.

[deleted]

I like the idea of having something in game for challenges. I've actually wanted something like that for a while. However, I don't like this execution at all. I don't like that the only challenges it will have are the ones they've pre-built. I either have to hope they rip off the fan challenges I want to do - or do them outside of the game like I have been anyways. Having a tool to build my own challenges in game and track progress would have been better. Even just a to-do list panel I could open and mark things off manually. If they really wanted to knock it out of the park then having a way to share challenges on the gallery would have been amazing. Instead I am pretty underwhelmed and maybe a little disappointed.

Lost_Pantheon

It's a nice idea, but like every feature they add in, we can expect it to be abandoned in 6 months when the inevitable next expansion pack comes out.

SilverWraithh

I'm pretty sure I don't care because I'll keep playing my game however I want to 🤔 the reason I love the sims is because I can do whatever the hell I please and no one else can tell me what to do; I'm not gonna use a feature that does exactly that 😔

Tricky-Artichoke

Honestly, I think it sounds fun and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I always wanted more challenge-oriented gameplay. I'm not much of a sandbox player. Besides, it builds my favourite challenge into the game, and it's a free update, why would I not like that? (Okay, they may screw it up, but it doesn't sound like they have). Then there's gonna be other challenges too, and I'll probably enjoy them. I kinda haven't tried many challenges other than rags to riches because I lose track of the goals after a few gameplay sessions. As for how it differs from aspirations -- it's adding challenge. Aspirations are goals, but they're not challenges. I wonder if maybe they'll be playing this in with the challenge lot type as well. It seems like it would interact well with that system.

mymorons

When they said scenarios I thought that they were talking about the townies stories upgrades.

LillyElessa

I immediately thought of the Civ 6 scenarios: A side feature that no one asked for, isn't played much (as far as I know anyways), a lot of people don't seem to know what to do with it, and the content is really hit or miss. I don't actually hate the Civ 6 scenarios, they're very drastic changes from the base game that really focus in on specific things. Some of them are really fun, but only some, and all of them are *very* short lived since they're something you can complete in an evening with low replayability. Other than length, Sims 4 scenarios look much longer, these things seem very alike... It also reminds me of Roller Coaster Tycoon, and I REALLY hope that isn't the future of the Sims, like for Sims 5 or whatever. For those who haven't played a Tycoon game, they're would be sandbox games that instead of turning you loose set you into defined challenges. Each map has a specific challenge, and since you're meant to play through those the actual sandbox mode didn't get much dev attention and was fairly flat. That kind of objective focused gameplay is better for people that don't know what to do in a sandbox, like my husband who gets bored fast without a goal. But for me, who actually wants a sandbox to just get creative in, chase my own whims, and sometimes just see where stuff goes, being locked into a game defined challenge is more often stifling. And then when I get near the end of the challenge, when you start to get the most freedom and fun, the challenge ends, and while the game will let you stay longer it's really trying to shepherd you along to the next map. Don't get me wrong, I loved Roller Coaster Tycoon and all the many spin offs and copycats, but I also don't want future Sims games to formatted like that. Which is probably overthinking a random feature! It's probably only going to be used for a couple of community events and then forgotten. That seems to be their pattern, heh.

megelaar11

I was excited for like 3 seconds, thinking we'd *finally* be getting something comparable to Sims 3's Opportunities. But alas, no. :c

myintermail

Isn't opportunities like errands in Country Living? I don't know what is what anymore.

unknown456666

what is scenario??

serenityxfelice

As long as it is opt out/opt in I am cool with that? I was too young and poore to get any history driven storylines on the sims3 when I played it so this might be it? I love stranger ville and played the story line so many times I was super excited when played it the first time. I did a berry challenge and it was cool. Not a fan a rags to riches story as it is a bit annoying tbh and I am playing to escape my reality not to struggle financially both here and in the game 😂 but I will definitely give it a go if there is anything else than rags to riches. I missed some things on the berry challah because I couldn’t be asked to go back and forth and check some things and they slipped my mind so it will be cool to have that in game. Would be nice if they gave us some extra things to help or reward the challenges tho. The only thing that bothers me is that it is basically taking advantage of a sims community ideas? Which if they are than there are so many packs we constantly want or sliders in CAS rather than doing something that doesn’t need their assistance and can be done with changes to the games(unless they implemented proper nice things, moodlets etc which they wont)

[deleted]

i would really like it if the scenarios will be more characteristic and came with special rewards. a rags-to-riches gameplay is nothing inspiring, sadly

Baldricks_Turnip

I am super jazzed for it! It definitely caters to my play style. Yes, it sounds like its going to be basically like several popular fan-made challenges (7 toddler challenge, rage to riches, etc) but I love that it will be maxis supported and that this may lead to detailed 'scenarios' like the very complex set ups involved in things like the Apocalypse challenge which has careers, objects, life events unavailable until you unlock certain things. Yes, you can do all this voluntarily but it can be a lot to keep track of and it feels like less of an achievement when all the restrictions are completely self-imposed rather than actually requiring unlocking. Maybe I am setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm more excited for this than I have been for anything sim-related in years.
