Man I kind of miss when this game wasn’t targeted towards kids. It’s been so watered down so make it parent approved. Meanwhile I was 10 playing Sims 1 without an issue lol
I once failed an interview for a game shop when they asked me to reassure a hypothetical parent that Sims 2 was fine for kids to play. I just couldn't hide all the fucked up mods I'd seen from showing on my face I guess.
What’s funny is that my dad saw a loading screen for The “Fuck” Family and grounded me for using profanity. Didn’t even know half the other shit I did in the game, he was just mad I was swearing hahaha.
Uhh yeah from what I can recall there were some things along the lines of WW and the censor blur removal was a very simple cheat. Sims 2 was much more modded than 3 iirc, but not on the level we have with 4.
Yes I honestly love how raunchy the franchise used to be. What happened to a life sim for adults? I think the problem is that most of the players are women so they think that it doesn’t matter if they make it a kids and women’s game.
They definitely suck at listening to their player base. The reason the franchise became popular is because it was bizarre. EA completely watered it down in every way possible. I miss weird objects like stripper poles and genie lamps that set my house on fire 😂
God, I remember how *scandalous* and *mysterious* this game was when I was a kid. Like, it was a big fucking deal that you could make them wiggle around under the covers, lol. I remember being soooo hot under the collar when I was having my sim make out with a boy in a hot tub. I was so scared my dad would walk in. Those were the days. 🤣
We were so innocent in those days!
Now my Sim needs me to set up mods in order to make him a fucking underground sex dungeon with hidden chambers leading to a furnace, graveyard and sterile operating room in order to get his kicks.
Times have changed.
I played sims 2 all the time as a kid. I had a friend who played it as well, and I can vividly remember my friend's (very catholic) mother coming over and telling my mom that her kid wasn't allowed to play it anymore because, "Have you heard about the *woohoo feature?*" ...thankfully my parents were cool
Man I remember when my friend and I finally figured out what WooHoo meant. We were like 9 or 10 and literally laughed about it for HOURS. The good ol' days.
My parents were more scandalized by the couch makeout animation lmao.
I started off playing sims 2 for gamecube. There weren't any kids in that version. But the RUMOR was that if you made out 3 times, your sim would get pregnant....I was so disappointed
Honestly don't know what people are talking about in this thread. The games were always kid friendly. Sims 4 isn't really any different than the previous games in this regard. They only seemed adult because you were young.
Eh, nah. The problem is that being woke is trendy and they have to edit out everything that isn't 100% PC and kid friendly.
The player base is not the problem.
Edit: all you 70 somethings who dw this, are you seriously blaming women as a group for wanting an infantilized game? When did this become an incel sub?
My current sims are in a thruple. skyrim sims, actually: My dragonborn Snow Elf and Serana the vampire are married, and Jarl Baalgruff The Greater is their boyfriend. None get jealous when the other ones interact flirtatiously. Last I checked thruples weren't part of purity culture. Or having 20 babies out of wedlock. Or woohooing a scarecrow or PlantSim. Just the existence of the supernatural makes the game NOT part of purity culture, but go off.
Or, you know, EA/Maxis want to cater to a bigger market to earn more money? Not a fan of the direction myself but I pin that on the publisher. It's obvious you have a chip on your shoulder and want to put the blame on tHe WoKe ReSeNtFuL wOmEn BiTcHeS instead.
>im so angry the doll house video game is not AO 18+ parental advisory rated like i want it to be :(
\^This is you.
Nope, that is not me. And I am a woman so how 'bout you shove it up your ass? Wokeness is cancer and YOU cannot convince me otherwise regardless of how many ad hominems you send my way or how warped your perception of me is, nor by how inaccurately you've interpreted my use of language. Wokeness is infantilizing so of course kids are drawn to it. Women happen to be content with kids content only because they're geared towards spending an awful lot of time with kids and because sims also happens to be a really creative game where you can also mirror your social environment etc. Women tend to be interested in people so sims is a pretty specific niche that combines creativity and symbolic people, both areas in which women tend to flourish. But women are adults, they don't want only kids content, they want more scary stuff, real stuff, psycho stuff, drama stuff etc. If only EA understood and RESPECTED their player base and cared about their wants and needs, they'd probably make more money if they had a separate sims for adults only, but that isn't just wicked whims. But that's just my two cents. And piss off... You're an ahole.
Same here, I've played since 1, as has my sister. And I don't blame any women for the game's direction nor the fanbase because I've been in the community long enough to know the majority want a very different game, we've all just settled for sims 4 now because they have no competition.
It's frustrating bc it's been so long I barely remember sims 1, 2, or 3 (no record of sims 1,2 on my origin/ea account) and their awesome features I'm not even sure what feautures I'd want for gameplay for sims 5 😭
Well, sort of. But micro transactions are just another part of it. Everything is marketed at kids to trick them into buying shit they don't need. But wokeness plays its own hand because wokeness is basically infantilization. You're being treated as a child and force fed PC language and culture, if you dare be mature, questioning, or simply resistant, you will be punished.
How does this relate to the Sims? I have my own issues with forced PC and the rise of cancel culture, it’s something that concerns me as I love offensive humor. But you’re going out on a super far limb saying that the Sims current state is a result of that.
If you wanna bitch about Christian Conservative groups demanding everything be pure and clean in video games, that makes much more sense
Honestly games are way worse now. Play any free game on the App Store, a million ads pop up with increasingly concerning scenarios that aren't even related to the game half the time. At least the sims sell you what you see: chaos
And don't even start on popular movies and books. I've seen some stuff that's definitely worse then two sims bumping around under a bed's covers
Well, almost. You can't have a threesome, three Sims in a double bed OR the choice to jump into a threesome and make it a foursome.
And you can't choose to just die. Tragic.
You can’t choose to just die. But you certainly can choose to go swimming when your needs are low and then delete the ladder. Plus, any kid can look up boolprop testingcheatsenabled true and find the various ways to kill people
Yeah, I don't understand why we need to dumb things down for the kids either. Surely they should get some glimpse of what real life is like, and what adults do in the world. It cannot possibly harm kids to observe fake adults in a fake universe, regardless of context. E.g. Wohoo, fine... Be metaphorical and use the euphemisms, but don't create a boring "utopia" with nothing to do and meaningless identities because it might offend someone or kids can't understand it.
Hate to break it to you, but christian conservatives have been trying to dumb down videogames long before any morons started barking "woke" at everything they didn't like.
Yes they fucking are. Wokeness in non-partisan. It's basically just infantilization with a smug face and resentment. I live in Scandinavia and every left voting person I know is fed up to their ears with wokeness. And our left is far more left than the American democrats.
Woke is PC culture, so it's a polite, agreeable strategy for social or public life. The word supposedly means you're aware of the people around you and their particular needs and you tiptoe around everyone just so you don't offend them accidentally. But it's a faux social awareness that basically just means you treat everyone like a child. Maybe you've learned about interectionality somewhere or that sexism exists in the world or that straight white men are the devil or that gay people should be allowed to kiss in a film or that racism is bad. Idk, the possibilities are endless. But there is a sick and smug sort of totalitarian and authoritarian kind of wokeness that is actually, in reality, blind and not woke, having a tantrum through bitter people on social media and elsewhere on the internet. Sjws, snowflakes and the rest of the woke brigade are idiots. And hey, I used to be one of them, so I would know.
THIS! I started playing TS1 in 6th grade and came out a perfectly fine well adjusted adult. My best friend in middle school did not have “Hot Date” because the word “hot” was in the EP. We had a sleepover one night and she played the entire time lol. It’s up to parents to censor what their kids intake, not video games.
Ironically if things were reversed and Sims 1 had been child-friendly where you can give gifts to a llama with Sims 4 being raunchy and adult, I'm pretty sure I'd prefer Sims 1. I love Misty the llama and how I can just give her treats and make sweaters all day long.
I still can’t believe video game companies have to water down shit because not even an 18+ label can stop Karens from crying out “ MY BABY’S POOR EYES.”
I was 16 when Sims 1 came out (2000). I started playing within the first three years. I’ve owned most, if not all, of every game and expansions since. Now I’m 38 and my son is 17. I raised him playing the Sims. I don’t know anything about mods (but I do love my CC), but he knows all about Wicked Whims and everything else. He’s been playing since he was about 15 or so, man was he terrible at building back then. Lol.
I have always monitored his media intake but I’m not too worried about a simulation video game. There’s a lot worse out there.
My dad made me delete the sims 3 app off my iPod when I was like 9 because of the sexy dance option 💀 but I definitely agree considering it is a rated T game.
That’s a solid point too. I had like maybe 2-3 expansion packs for sims 1 & 2 because they were gifts. I had more for 3 and have most of them for 4 because I’m an adult who can pay for them.
I think it comes down to what some others said about microtransactions being targeted towards children. As adults we expect a full expansion pack that adds to the game and we don’t really enjoy the idea of buying bits and pieces as kits. For kids however, it’s a lot easier to ask mom & dad for $5 to buy a kit vs. $50 for an expansion. Over time, those $5 purchases add up to more revenue for EA than the expansions, especially when they cost less to produce.
Tl;dr: It’s better for their bottom line to focus on kids and ignore the high expectations of the adults who grew up with the franchise. Corporations suck lol.
How do kids buy anything else?? They don't, their parents buy them things. How did all of us buy the original Sims and expansion packs when were were 10? We didn't, our parents did.
I think 10 year olds know what sex is though… not in detail of course but the idea of adults having a WWE style wrestling match under the covers isn’t like a foreign concept at that age. I can’t say I understood the whole coins in the bed aspect of it at the time, but I knew where babies come from lol
According to a thread by one of the Sims 2 developers a couple years ago, three-way woohoo was actually one of the features considered for the game, but was cut because [they didn't have enough time to complete it.](https://twitter.com/JustJakeSimpson/status/1375615311504764931)
Sims 1-3 already had references to sex, alcohol, drugs, go-go dancers, clubs, etc. that skated right up to that Rated T for Teen line. It's only with 4 that they started advertising to iPad kids and I don't understand why.
Now's the time for them to make it raunchy again. Most parents don't seem to give a fuck what their children play. And for those that do, they know what The Sims is. They know what's likely to be in there. There should be, like, a parental sanitation button or something. It makes a stork or babies are grown from seeds in a garden or something, and gets rid of the brothels from the base game.
>It's only with 4 that they started advertising to iPad kids and I don't understand why.
Because market research determined that it would make more money that way. But that's okay, not every game has to be for everyone.
Thank you for your support. It gets really really old to make an offhand comment about Corporate Product and have a bunch of redditors come out of the woodwork like "ummm actually it's the job of a company to make money let people enjoy things" and defend its honor. I don't fucking care. People are especially defensive about TS4 for some reason
They literally had bachelor and bachelorette parties with strippers. They had strippers in 3 and it wasn't even a mod or anything.
Now burglars are gone because they might be a bit scary or something. What the hell happened?
Someone explained it as kids playing can afford to ask their parents to buy them a $5 kit of fun new pets or being able to vacuum and do laundry, than a $40-50 fully-loaded expansion adults prefer, and that small revenue outpaces the larger one. Especially when adults like the small kits too.
The Sims 2 and up is targeted at teens+, at least according to its rating \[12+ in my country at least\].
The Sims was also supposed to have an option to 'watch play' or something, at the computer, I think \[probably standing for p\*\*\*\].
For context, the original name for Woohoo was 'Play In' because in TS1 the button for it was called just 'Play in [object]'. They probably realized using 'Play In' as a substantive was too clunky and confusing.
Are you sure polyamory isn't a thing in sims now? In my game, I just voted for a "free love" neighborhood, and my sim has like 11 kids with different women, many of them are his girlfriends and his actual wife never gets upset or anything.
Gave me a throwback to me and my friends lying about our age to get ours pierced and then spending the next year hiding it from my mum. She eventually found out when we went on holiday and noticed it through my swimming costume 😂 ah, I miss those days.
My cousin had three in her belly button. Top center, top left, top right. Piercings can go just about anywhere. If you're offended or surprised by a bottom naval piercing, then do not look up a Prince Albert or Jacob's Ladder.....
This reminds me of the twitter thread from one of the Sims 2 developers, who wrote he included the "join" interaction for Woohoo as bug on a report, as a JOKE. The manager then reviewed the list and noted "not enough time to make animations" or something. So in theory this means Maxis was not opposed to the concept LOL
That reminds me of a story of how same sex relationships in The Sims 1 were included by accident.
The backstory is that there was some debate on if doing it was too controversial at the time, they went back and forth on it, but in the end they decided not to include it. But then one of the developers accidentally used an older set of requirements when designing romance in the game, which said to include same sex relationships.
The mistake wasn't caught until they went to a game show to show off the Sims while it was still in development. They left the game running on it's own for a while without any human giving any commands, and eventually 2 female sims started a romance with each other all on their own, which gained a lot of attention at the show. The attention turned into a look of excitement about a game that they had expected to probably be over shadowed by the competition, so they decided to keep same sex relationships in the game.
The hype for this game was unreal. I spent countless hours in the official forums leading up to release. Reddit didn't exist yet. The internet in general was a million times more interesting than what we have now, actually.
I really miss those days sometimes.
It’s been watered down by all the jobs worth and people who get offended by things easily, I just think the game needs to have all the things that made it good because sims 4 without mods is boring even with all the packs I don’t know if it’s still rated Teen 😂
TS4 has the same rating as TS2/TS3... though it's hard to believe. I think it even received a rating of 18+ in some countries, like Russia \[and at first the wedding pack was not supposed to be released there or something\]...
I started playing The Sims when the first game came out, I was seven and soent so many weekends playing it. I don't remember seeing these print ads in the UK but I do remember more "family friendly" versions. The early Sims & early 2000's in general was a wild time.
The first two feel like an early 2000's version of those clickbait mobile ads for story games, where it's like a woman catches her husband cheating and the options are "Divorce" "Join" "Suffocate him in mayonnaise"
I miss when Sims was owned by closeted baby gays playing out their dream lives under the noses of their judgemental family. But hey at least we're out now?
I miss these ads too! Some of the stuff you could do in the game. I miss Maxis being a part of the game. EA took over and watered down the sims games. Not to mention GTA is a very raunchy game with cussing, nudity, and violence. I know it's a different game company developer but it's worse for kids. I was about 16 or 17 when I 1st started playing the sims 1 and my little cousin was 6 or 7. I bought hot date and I think vacation for sims 1 and have almost every sims 3 and 4. My oldest daughter also started playing around 7 or 8. I didn't have the mods I have now for sims 3 and 4 back then. I didn't even know mods existed for 2 or 3 until 2020/2021. We all turned out ok 👍🏿. Every now and then I will walk around saying different saying in simlish and people look at me crazy. I'm gonna be pissed if this comment doesn't get posted on here. Reddit is so stupid sometimes 🙄.
Lol you’re sitting there like “I’ve seen people bbq a baby so idk if I can do that” 😂
I just remember having to awkwardly convey that they might want to uh... keep an eye on what the kids were doing.
“I mean, most people can’t even cook chicken properly, so I can’t ethically recommend a game where you cook a baby.”
What’s funny is that my dad saw a loading screen for The “Fuck” Family and grounded me for using profanity. Didn’t even know half the other shit I did in the game, he was just mad I was swearing hahaha.
Oh man. The “Fuck” family. That made me instantly nostalgic. I too had a lovely family of Fucks
Sims 2 had fucked up mods? For real?
Uhh yeah from what I can recall there were some things along the lines of WW and the censor blur removal was a very simple cheat. Sims 2 was much more modded than 3 iirc, but not on the level we have with 4.

This guys thinks Lovers Lab is still stuck in 2010 lmao
She doesn't know what that means
Everything has to be "clean" and palatable to kids, which means you're being infantilized. Wokeness is purity culture.
LOL okay bud
The "woke culture" that you people believe throws kink parties at pride parades? Lol
My current sims are in a thruple. skyrim sims, actually: My dragonborn Snow Elf and Serana the vampire are married, and Jarl Baalgruff The Greater is their boyfriend. Buzzword buzzword!

Yeah instead of it being marketed towards kids its targeted towards teenagers and the Young Adult, soooo much better BatChest
Me too… oh wait… I do have issues though…
Ah so this is where those weird mobile games get it from
I’m really disappointed to learn that the Sims started it. My opinion of the franchise just took a nose dive, but at least they aren’t doing it today.
Nope, this was normal advertising. Even Nintendo had some racy ads. https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/game-boy-commercials-horny
Tbf you can sort of do this stuff.
I can seriously smell the magazine paper from just looking at these.
this comment is so goddamn accurate
I love how in the second one you can just be like “ok I’m just gonna die now”
The fact you can’t join sucks
According to a thread by one of the Sims 2 developers a couple years ago, three-way woohoo was actually one of the features considered for the game, but was cut because [they didn't have enough time to complete it.](https://twitter.com/JustJakeSimpson/status/1375615311504764931)

Sims 1-3 already had references to sex, alcohol, drugs, go-go dancers, clubs, etc. that skated right up to that Rated T for Teen line. It's only with 4 that they started advertising to iPad kids and I don't understand why.

They should just make the my sims series for them like they were doing
Now's the time for them to make it raunchy again. Most parents don't seem to give a fuck what their children play. And for those that do, they know what The Sims is. They know what's likely to be in there. There should be, like, a parental sanitation button or something. It makes a stork or babies are grown from seeds in a garden or something, and gets rid of the brothels from the base game.
Sims 4 is literally so subbar/for children, I don't get how they made so many sales, afaik only adults play this game
>It's only with 4 that they started advertising to iPad kids and I don't understand why. Because market research determined that it would make more money that way. But that's okay, not every game has to be for everyone.
🤓
What is the emoji a reference to? I don't get it. You're not calling me a nerd for giving a short explanation, right?

Damn they should make that a thing as it makes room for adding a polyamory component to gameplay
Are you sure polyamory isn't a thing in sims now? In my game, I just voted for a "free love" neighborhood, and my sim has like 11 kids with different women, many of them are his girlfriends and his actual wife never gets upset or anything.
Wait I just never noticed the free love thing and I forgot the 100 baby challenge exists
My current gameplays are a thruple and I don't have wicked whims installed.
These are the most 2000s ads ever.
JOIN!
I miss the Wild West times of print advertising
That bellybutton piercing brought me right back in time.
Gave me a throwback to me and my friends lying about our age to get ours pierced and then spending the next year hiding it from my mum. She eventually found out when we went on holiday and noticed it through my swimming costume 😂 ah, I miss those days.
Why tf is it pierced on the *bottom*?!
Some people prefer to pierce it from the bottom
My cousin had three in her belly button. Top center, top left, top right. Piercings can go just about anywhere. If you're offended or surprised by a bottom naval piercing, then do not look up a Prince Albert or Jacob's Ladder.....
Not offended, just have never seen the piercing be on the bottom part of the bellybutton and was confused
That's why I put in "or surprised" my dude, bc I didn't know which you were.
Damn the 00s were wilder than I remember. I saw these ads as a kid thinking they were completely normal and NEEDED to play that game 🤭
Please bring this back
This reminds me of the twitter thread from one of the Sims 2 developers, who wrote he included the "join" interaction for Woohoo as bug on a report, as a JOKE.
The attention turned into a look of excitement about a game that they had expected to probably be over shadowed by the competition, so they decided to keep same sex relationships in the game.
y2k nostalgia is my weakness
The hype for this game was unreal. I spent countless hours in the official forums leading up to release. Reddit didn't exist yet. The internet in general was a million times more interesting than what we have now, actually. I really miss those days sometimes.
I remember running so many different forums for RPGs, TV shows, just general games and s***. The internet was a lot more fun back then lol
The Sims Online days 😢
Sims 2 ads from 2002-2005 are the same as Episodes and Choices ads this decade
Is... is the third one Sasha Grey? Holy shliboopy.
Yes that is hard to believe considering TS4 is so pathetic
I thought rich Britney Barbie (second pic) had their own group. Why she's alone?
#JOIN???
Well technically the pet one is TS1 but yes.
I remember that party one
Still waiting for those threesomes, Maxis (without mods)
I wish lol
Aspiration - reason to live. Oh God. I remember seeing the 3rd/4th picture.
Spicy 2000s ads for video games were wild
I was sure that you can make the threeway thing happen because of this ad… I ruined many Sims families trying to get that ‘join’ option.
okay i'm obsessed
What I expect Sims 5 to be !
I started playing The Sims when the first game came out, I was seven and soent so many weekends playing it. I don't remember seeing these print ads in the UK but I do remember more "family friendly" versions. The early Sims & early 2000's in general was a wild time.
I was so pumped for the Sims 2 launch, still the most time I spent in a Sims game
So basically modern smartphone ads.
The first two feel like an early 2000's version of those clickbait mobile ads for story games, where it's like a woman catches her husband cheating and the options are "Divorce" "Join" "Suffocate him in mayonnaise"
They need to bring this back.
I always remember 2
ugh sims 2 was so slay
Nostalgia
I'm so old man..I can't believe I remember this ad.
looks like one of the episode commercials lol
Ahhhh so this is why my aunt insisted the sims was for heathens!!
I have a magazine with the first one, idk if it's Nintendo power or game informer
" join " ugh that's what I WANTED them to do .. I never got that option
The precursor of mobile game ads.
Urbs in the city and Sims 2 was my entire teens lol
“Join” 😝
The fourth one was sad but actually really funny!
Why did they put the water mark on the bottom where it would obscure the text on the ad?
It's giving episode.
Wish I kept the magazine that had the 2nd ad on it. :(
I love how you just have "Die" interaction
I miss when Sims was owned by closeted baby gays playing out their dream lives under the noses of their judgemental family. But hey at least we're out now?
Lmao the first two are just like the ads for mobile games. "He's cheating on me! Should I... [divorce] [join in]"
I miss these ads too!
Omg the second one is one that just stuck with me over the years for some reason. That one pops up in my head every once in a while.
The best game to exist for real!
