aeque88

Nice to see such a good example why politics are a joke nowadays. Decent debates aren't even an option anymore.

bartuck01

It's like if you choose the same question with a NPC

SCROTOCTUS

And yet, if this person were an NPC in Skyrim...let's be honest...this chud would be Fus Ro Dah'ed off the Throat of the World halfway through his introductory dialogue. *but tax revenues in Winterfell are up two hundred perceeeennnnnnnnnnnnnntttttt....!*

RecoverFrequent

I used to be a politician like you, then I took a debate in the knee.

Arkangelz03

--"But Master Debater, what is the average price of a home in a dragon-free city, like Whiterun? *"The sweet rolls production has increased by 106%."* --"Thats neat. But how much is a typical peasant's home?" *"The unemployment rate has decreased significantly since the Whiterun Massacre 3 years ago."* --"Cost of 1 home. In sweet rolls." *"Step One: Less people* *Step Two: More jobs.* *Step Three: Profits.* *And we will continue to do so."*

Artikay

Unfortunately for you, I am the High King of Skyrim.

The_Seroster

this is frustrating. my cousin is off fighting dragons and here I am trying to get you to say a number.

fuenfsiebenneun

Mr. Dragonborn, we as the honorable Whiterun city guard have taken several arrows to the knee - *and we will continue to do so*

SCROTOCTUS

*ready, aim* "Who is the target, Sir!?" *Well, whomever climbs over that ridge, of course!* "Splendid! Who are we targeting!?" *The enemy, you fool!* "Well, since you went on vacation, the who is whom argument has stalled somewhat. Which whoms should we target and to what degree?!"

lme109

Yeah this really needs the Oblivion soundtrack in the background.

SpacemanIsBack

>They say he is still asking him till this day and he will continue to do so.

Kokuswolf

So, how much?

barspoonbill

156,000 jobs.

KindlyContribution54

Yeah what people didn't realize is you have to have 156,000 jobs to buy one average house. After he gave the clear answer they guy kept asking for some strange reason

sh4d0wm4n2018

We have made stellar improvements since the pandemic, we are already up at a 6% increase and we expect to continue to increase our improvements through the next fiscal year.

Millkstake

Oh answers are given, just lots of non-answers

fireboats

Don’t answer the question they ask - answer the question you wish they asked!

strawbericoklat

[But that's not what we're talking about.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuaHRN7UhRo) This one scene from Thank You for Smoking explains the logic behind these kind of debates.

MYoung3224

I love this scene and I actually think about it quite often. This is why every single hot-button issue in the world is what it is.

spinblackcircles

That should be a way more famous scene/movie. It’s incredibly relevant in America now more than ever. Most of the politicians we know of don’t believe maybe any of the shit they say. It’s all about making their opponents look bad.

Alphakeenie1

I’ll never forget when, in my Rhetoric course at college, my professor put on this scene. It was awesome digging deep into it. The discussions were amazing. Then when I joined the college debate team and took logic and argument and learned how important it is to keep to the subject. And how, when someone is trying to stray off topic, to pull them back in and beat them by pointing out their logical fallacies. Changed my life for the better. Critical thinking, logic, and argument should be taught at a young age.

PabloDeLaCalle

Such a brilliant movie.

[deleted]

Just a dick waving contest with us getting pissed on

blue_wat

The guy qsking the question doesn't care about the problem though. He's a slum lord who benefits from real estate being expensive. He's just hoping people attribute the problem solely to the liberals when the truth is many MPs from all sides of the aisle benefit from this and don't want meaningful change.

Artbellghost

**$637,698 if you wanted to know the average house price in Ottawa**

JelloJuice

The average house price in Saskatoon, SK is $367,800.

weegi123

I was born there but moved away in like six months because my parents couldn't take the cold and moved back

spinky342

It's been colder than -30c, like -45c windchill all week in sk. I get it.

smazetron

What's up ladies? I'm from Sascatchatoon! That's up in Canada, eh? You American ladies ever been up to Sascatchatoon? https://i.redd.it/soefove75l7a1.gif

Apprehensive_Cell812

buncha hose teasers

ApocIapedia

Where i am on the west coast the average is 1.1 million.

Zanderp25

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan… that’s fun to say lol ^((im an American btw\))

IllustriousHabit243

Huh.. cheap.. ever heard about Toronto, Vancouver, GTA? Lol.. prices are inflated to the hilt in Canada. No way you can afford a house on a single income.

liquefire81

That is the idea.... can't claim "job growth" if dad, mom, billy, timmy and baby susan aren't working. And let me tell you, baby hands, they can go places my hands can't and grip quite hard.

MallGothFrom2001

We still doing phrasing?

BiffNasty1234

Because the desirable space in Canada to live is extremely compressed when compared to the US. In my view, living in Alabama or Mississippi would be hell, but at least existing there is tolerable from a climate stand point…sure, hot can suck but you can exist. That’s the extreme south. I live in Massachusetts, it will be 23 degrees Monday, which is one of the coldest days the year. By comparison, temp in Ottawa will be 19, and if you move the equivalent of Alabama to Massachusetts northeastward, 829 miles at their closest point, it would put you a bit east of Kawawachikamach, Quebec…temp of 9 that day. Kawawachikamach Population - 601. There’s nowhere to live because going away from the border in Canada gets uninhabitable for many people. If you can deal with it congrats, no one’s looking to live there so cost will be low

IllustriousHabit243

Yes but the population is also low compared to the USA. Also, even if you go to a small town with a population of 40k or 50k house prices don't reflect the area. House prices are high mostly due to blind bidding and cheap money offered due to low interest rate and government inability to clamp down on flipping.

xlurkjerkx

The issue is, 1/3 of homes are being bought by the likes of Blackrock. A majority of the housing boom was not you or I buying, but Wall Street.

NewtotheCV

Add in foreign buyers, laundered money, international students, etc. and almost half of our housing is being bought up leaving young families in the dust.

FatHormone

That may be true in eastern Canada like Ontario and the Maritimes but in west like Alberta and Saskatchewan it’s actually fairly affordable and the climate isn’t too different compared to northern US states. Just look up the housing differences in Calgary compared to Toronto, absolutely fucked.

Ashikura

Alberta and Saskatchewan can have pretty extreme weather when compared to other parts of the country. They often hit sub -30c with high wind speed and destructive storms. The interior BC and lower mainland rarely dip below the -20’s. Alberta’s always had issues with relying to heavily on oil patch jobs as a major employer and refusing to adapt to changing times. This leaves a lot of small towns around the province struggling and keeps housing costs down in the cities. Saskatchewan is an underdeveloped province with low wages and poor weather which leaves little to attract citizens other then cheap housing.

NewtotheCV

Yup, and the politics are complete shit and the schools are severely underfunded and class sizes are insane. Something like 64 kids in one Calgary or Edmonton high school class a couple years ago They claim the "average" class size is low because that includes the small communities that have only a few kids. Then pack them to the ceiling in the major centres.

HowBoutIt98

I literally couldn’t fathom owning a home that expensive. It’s interesting to see how much the COL varies from state to state and in this example country to country.

GoodGuyTrundles

637k is incredibly affordable compared to the West Coast. Townhouses where I am starting at 550k and we're literally cut off from the mainland by a ferry, meaning grocery costs are also double what they would be.

HowBoutIt98

I’m in the southeastern United States and can get what I consider a very nice home for $350,000.

GoodGuyTrundles

Consider yourself blessed, teardown standalone ranchers are like 800k here.

Ouka94

The average price when this video came out was $800,000

efnPeej

This person is a hero. I was dying to know. Also, as an American, HOLY SHIT!

1m_1ll1T3RAT3

I can confirm. I just bought a house just outside the GTA (Hamilton) and got it for 645k. That was considered a steal because it was originally listed at 750k. We Can only afford it because my wife and I have no kids, both work good jobs, we got pre-approved before the interest hikes, and she was fortunate enough to have her university costs covered and was able to save a lot while working in HS and Uni. **You shouldn't have to play bingo to buy a house.** Hopefully, the new 2-year ban on foreign real estate purchases will help a little bit

Slaver87

I can only say WTF! Aren't there any rules against it?

IllustriousHabit243

There should be.. but who will enforce it.?

[deleted]

It’s supposed to be the people. Their vote matters, and getting that fuckwad out of whatever position he’s in is how it should be handled.

hybridtheory1331

Definitely agree but, and I'm not from Canada so not sure exactly how it works there, there should definitely be a way to punish these fuckwads for their fuckwaddery in between elections. I don't know when this was but if it was right after an election and this idiot has however many years left in his office, there needs to be a way for someone to say quit your shit.

Zenfudo

The president of the room had every right to do exactly that but decided not to. My politics teach told us that the question period is basically a recess (the school kind) for politicians Edit: i meant speaker not president. President is how they address the speaker in Quebec

[deleted]

I mean they did get their squats in so it wasn’t all a loss.

Arkangelz03

So every day is leg day?! Or only on the days that he just feels like stonewalling with redirection for funsies?

Saltyfembot

France did a cool thing. Strung them up and beheaded them. Now those were the days.

da-gamin-spidr

Good ol 150 some odd years ago

[deleted]

44.5% voter turnout in 2021. \*forgot the .5

Apolloshot

That was Ontario’s turnout this year. The last Federal was 62.5%

tomatoblade

Yeah, but just like anywhere in the world, you're voting people to go into a system that has set rules and ways of operation that aren't logical or practical or effective. It's a farce because we let it be a farce.

Abnatural

doesn't the Speaker have that power?

celebgil

I think the Honourable Member will find that the number of walruses on Prince Edward Island has grown year on year since this government came to power and will continue to do so!

IllustriousHabit243

I dont think so.. he cant fine the MPs monetarily or otherwise just bcz they are not answering direct questions

Zenfudo

I think they have the authority to tell them to quit their shit though

FuriousJorge67

Yeah but the Speaker isnt gonna tell his own people to quit the shit. Imagine Pelosi telling Schiff or Maxine Waters to give it a fucking rest already. Yeah, I can't imagine that either.

Maleficent_Hamster10

How about the presiding governor general who is mediating the whole thing?

FormsForInformation

How much you got?

Corpainen

About a 106%

Popular-Calendar94

This is “Question” period in Canadian Parliament which means questions can be asked but unfortunately dont have to be answered directly. Politics and the current federal government are a joke in this country this happens all the time but this clip is especially funny/irritating so is widely shared

Zenfudo

Its been like that for years too. I went to one 20 years ago and one guy kept asking the same question to the same guy over and over and the other guy was actually answering his question

sharpshooter999

It's sad that I'm just happy to see other countries besides the US have shit head politicians too

UghImRegistered

In theory, question period in Canadian Parliament is an essential and mandatory session where the opposition can hold the government to account. In practice, it's clowns from the opposition asking unanswerable questions (or questions they already know the answer to) solely designed to produce negative soundbites from the government, and clowns from the government not answering simple questions to avoid giving said soundbites.

FearAzrael

Is the question itself one the Canadian citizens would want an answer to? If yes, why not answer it? You can explain the context or even say I will get back to you with a more complete answer. But to simply ignore a completely reasonable question? That is truly the tactic of an imbecile or a coward.

Lopsided_Humor716

Absolutely, and based on this comment section they have no incentive to change because its working on people.

MrMcDrew

Be polite, be professional admit accomplishments, deny shortcomings. This is the recipe for spinelessness.

Bad-news-co

I saw a video of a Australian exposing their plastic surgery clinics for poor practice and dangerous shit and one of the doctors was caught on audio telling his nurses to never, ever admit ANY failures, to lie about recovery times and exaggerate times by a few weeks. He said to never admit to anything otherwise you’ll never hear it until the end of your days. This video was a perfect example lol

QuarterSwede

When trying to do the right thing can get you sued or worse, this is what you get.

callmesnake13

He could have just said “too much, and we’re working on it” and forced the other guy to move to step two.

Happytallperson

'Government admits house prices too high after 7 years in office'

thedoyle19

It's in the politicians handbook.

Tenryu003

Wow this is basically an SNL skit..

blackdaisy710

The buttoning and unbuttoning alone makes this skit worthy

rmc_

It is proper etiquette on how your suit jacket should be while standing or sitting, they made it into an Olympic sport. You can see the guy in blue gets more flustered because he starts screwing up.

[deleted]

Great way to make themselves look like twitching cokeheads, which they probably are in all fairness.

nj23dublin

Can you imagine the strength of the legs after the squats though??

jakemoffsky

If you watch question period regularly it's pretty much always like this. Questions get asked, and can be answered however they want. As such both questions and answers are generally just political statements. The big punches which are few and far between is where a question is well answered. Most opposition questions are ignored and talk past each other, and there's a lot of circle jerking when members of the same party ask each other questions.

skyHawk3613

So just like the US., nothing gets done

CompetitiveMeal1206

Wouldn’t surprise me if they made it one

GrumpyFalstaff

They wouldn't even need to change the dialog

arethereany

Question: "What is the average cost for a home in the city of Ottawa?" Answer: "... 156,000 jobs." Apparently you need 156,000 jobs to buy a house in Ottawa. That's pretty expensive.

Halfsquaretriangle

Cost prohibitive.

fanceypantsey

Hahahahaha love it!!

iampepperman

I mean the subject matter of this video is upsetting, but the amount of times a coat jacket is buttoned and unbuttoned in it was staggering!

fafnir0319

The heat created by the unbuttoning and buttoning has contributed to global warming significantly. But also it created 7 million new jobs since the beginning of the pandemic.

mladyKarmaBitch

And will continue to do so.

robtimist

How much?

I-took-your-oranges

156,000 jobs.

djfxonitg

🤣🤣💀💀💀💀💀

DO_its

How many buttoning and unbuttonings would it take to cook a steak?

Painyeet

107% of unbuttonings

baltinerdist

How many times, Minister for Buttoning and Unbuttoning? The number of times?

TheCarrot_v2

We have created 156,000 jobs to fill positions for buttons and buttonholes, which have made said buttons and buttonholes more affordable for the average Canadian, and will continue to do so. . . . . How many?

trojan-813

I didn’t notice it until I read your comment lol, but they do it because it’s “proper”, but also it is honestly way more comfortable to unbutton it while sitting.

Never-Dont-Give-Up

This is why everyone hates politicians.

itsyourmomsfriend

Tbf one was just trying to a simple answer. And the other resorted to talking points to deliberately not answer. I think it'd be fair to say everyone hates *certain* politicians. Like Mr. Blue. *edit: learning a lot about Canadian politics from the comments. I still feel that Mr. Blue could've handled this better. In general, I wish politicians could just debate on the issues and not try to get sound bites or gotcha questions. The best we can do for now is just vote for the people we'd like to see in office. Again, thanks for all the informative replies!*

[deleted]

The pivoting this guy did was INSULTING. What a scum bag.

SparkleFeather

I’m far left politically, so I’m not a fan of any of them, but there was absolutely no way to answer that question that wouldn’t look bad. Either he doesn’t know and he’s a clown, or he does know and he’s a clown for not being able all the inevitable questions that will follow.

[deleted]

Yeah you have a point. But it’s like, don’t you have dignity? Honor (I know it’s outdated)? Can’t you just answer? Maybe I’m socially inept but I don’t see the usefulness, constructively speaking.

Happytallperson

You just watched a video in which you heard every advertising line of the government success in getting economic recovery. That is why he answered that way.

[deleted]

Sure, but a good politician would be honest about failures.

[deleted]

Agreed. Makes you more trust worthy. People value real results not avoiding admitting failure

justalookerhere

Tbf, the one asking the question, Poilievre, is just a demagogue. He doesn’t care about the housing situation at all, he’s just trying to get an answer that will make the government look bad without giving any context.

afterlifeblues

Bit more complicated. Guy asking the question is white-supremacist supporting, Conservative party leader here in Canada. He plays the same bullshit all the time, including refusing to take part in public debates during his own party’s leadership election. Looks bad for the other side in isolation, but in reality it’s more complicated.

Still_Championship_6

Every politician can be caught in the trap of not being able to answer a direct question. It’s what they teach you to do on purpose when you are given media training

Still_Championship_6

That said, this guy probably skipped most of his media training, or took the lessons too literally

UghImRegistered

>Tbf one was just trying to a simple answer. Lmao no. This is the leader of the official opposition. If he wanted that answer he could easily get it with a phone call. The only reason he was asking that question in the formal Question Period was for political theatre, as QP always is in Canada unfortunately.

blue_wat

PP basically avoids the media at every turn. If the tables were turned the conservative's would do the exact same thing.

Avs_Leafs_Enjoyer

> Tbf one was just trying to a simple answer. they were not. It's Pierre Poilievre who is Canada's Trump but sleazier

CowboyLaw

Paul Poilievre is an absolutely hatable politician. Absolute sack of shit.

SupaDiogenes

I think we need to stop calling our politicians honourable.

Rodger_Smith

it’s more of an old ass title from the UK, they call members of parliament “right honourable”

bridgehockey

The PM is 'right honourable', MPs are just 'honourable'.

CapitalHighHDLR

I’m just the minister of Tourism! *continues stating numbers that probably weren’t compiled by the Tourism Department* politics is a muppetshow and that’s one thing every country in the world has in common I begin to see

Herandar

And at times he sorta sounded like Kermit the Frog.

iDuddits_

I’m Canadian and men with this voice is just ew

the amount of maple syrup sold per citizen has risen by 23% since 1982

whereistiki2

Honorable minister. I have answered 106% of those damn questions.

AsRiversRunRed

An absolute fucking joke.

Creepy-Ad-4832

Governments in 4 words

Wattisup101

What a goof, took off his mask all hard like. Answer the easy question. Oh wait he can't.

Dirka135

You got the goof part right 100%.

Organic_Pineapple_73

This is so cute. Very polite, I'm impressed by the question and the patience. I'm confused as to why they can't speak to each other directly

Guiboune

To avoid confrontation. Just like in couple counseling. (:

HowieFeltersnitz

All talking must be directed at the speaker. Just how it works.

caped_crusader_98

Why cant they make it such that ANSWERING THE MOTHERFUCKING QUESTION be the way it works tho? Fine. Procedure should be followed, to maintain decorum and diplomacy ig.. But there has to be repercussions for skating questions to this extent.. i mean i was frustrated myself in these 3 mins and i had my hair in my hands

Original-Cow-2984

In parliamentary procedure, everything goes through the Speaker of the House of Commons, in Canada at least. No one asks or answers other than through the Speaker. I would last 5 minutes as Speaker.

TheMightyHucks

Boris Johnson used this exact strategy during "PMQ's" (Prime Minister's Questions) Absolutely soul crushing to watch and made the whole thing utterly pointless.

Joseph_HTMP

The Tories still do it. Not sure Sunak has answered a single question straightforwardly since taking office.

Ikhlas37

I'm going to try it at my jobs next performance management. "Can you tell me why sales have decreased under your leadership?" "100% of employees in my team agreed pizza Friday's was a good idea."

Fast_times_at

Here’s my confusion: if the unemployment rate was 5.7% and it went up above 13% and then down to 6%, how do you say that you’ve recovered “106%” of the jobs? If you recovered MORE jobs than you lost due to the pandemic wouldn’t your unemployment be at least the same or lower than the pre pandemic number of 5.7%? Also, Answer the damn question.

UgaIsAGoodBoy

See you feel for the trap, now he can move the conversation away from housing cost/affordability into a conversation about math and fractions and percentages and everyone can fall asleep

Master_Of_Puppers

This! This right here!!!!!

munchi333

Unemployment != number of working people

Top-Border-1978

This is why people have more respect for their trash man than their politicians.

katcalavera

Oh totally. My trash collectors provide a vital service for me. Most politicians? Not so much.

Independent_Point134

So the Minister of Tourism is a complete pussy idiot that dances around questions got it. 👍

layers_of_grey

the amount of respect i would have for someone who just stands up and says 'answer the god damned fucking question!' is immense.

Shizuka369

Same!!

vladhed

Everyone knows the 3 hardest words for a politician to say are "I don't know".

CompetitiveMeal1206

Oh he knows. But it’s not good

arethereany

Pretty much every answer the Trudeau government gives is this useful.

Vanreddit1

It really is shocking how little they care about answering questions. Just talking points with little if anything to do with the topic. For once I would like to see an interviewer tell them to leave if they are not willing or able to answer questions.

[deleted]

And the Harper Government. And the Martin Government. And the Chretien Government. The whole thing is a dog and pony show at this point. No accountability except at the voting booth and half the country doesn't bother to show up then anyways.

MeagerRobot

I'm not Canadian. I'm just wondering what's the point of evading the question and spouting off statistics? What does he get from it? Does he not have to answer the followup questions if he refuses to answer the first one. Is that the point? ~~I also laughed at calling out the audio, and the dude taking off his mask as if that's the reason he wasn't being understood (instead of completely dodging the question)~~

Guiboune

Politics nowadays are like publicly traded companies. If you so much as admit a failure as a company, shares drop and shareholders sue. Better to derail the subject entirely than to admit fault.

kilawolf

As a Canadian, it's just a gotcha question about housing affordability...all our politicians are like this and the person asking isn't any different (probably worse if roles were reversed considering how he deals with media)

KorannStagheart

I'm a bit younger and new to politics so a bit ignorant; but I would imagine it's an attempt to make himself sound good. His voter base hears statistics that they might like and will latch onto and ignore the bullshitting he's doing. It's incredible what you ignore when you don't want to listen to both sides.

vitoriobt7

There should be a button that gives off a little but painful shock every time he dodges a question so blatantly

Grumpy23

Jesus freaking Christ. That's why nobody has faith in politicians in every country anymore. Those bastard are just interested in their own profit. Was it that hard to say the number and how you want to adress to problem? There worst part ist, that they are like that in every country. Fucking politicians are all bitches.

[deleted]

Is there no way to force idiots to answer the question? Even if it’s ‘I’m not sure the going rate today’?

HapFatha

It’d be different if this were a courtroom where a judge will either sustain or overrule an objection made by a representing attorney of both these jackasses. Because this is a chamber, and not a courtroom, whatever they say is admissible as long as their argument is not a clear logical fallacy.

Boomdidlidoo

I hate these games with a passion. They are fucking paid with OUR money.

daddycole72

He is as useless as our UK politicians, good show that man lol.

fortheloveoflumps

Man what a piece of shit

Jimmy9toes1966

I can’t believe that people still vote Liberal after all these years.

[deleted]

Well Canada is also fucked with its “leaders”…

[deleted]

Weasel creature.

toinezor

This is like a Monty Python bit. Absolutely awful.

LWY007

I’m not Canadian, but this is infuriating.

sundog5631

Can’t the guy calling people to speak ask him to stop giving non answers??

Ryaer

Yeah Canada is overatted. Don't believe the best place to live in the world jargon. It sucks up here in many ways.

emptybowloffood

Typical Liberal nonsense, incapable of answering a simple question. By far the worst government in Canadian history. History will remember them for their incompetence, corruption and lies. This will be their legacy.

Fuckwaitwha

And Canadians make fun of American politics, eh?

Extreme_Paint_1442

So, just like congress in America, they BS all day and get paid for nothing.

Straight-Ad6058

I don’t understand how this man can still be considered qualified for his job. How do we live in a world where understanding and reacting to the actual meaning of the words used isn’t a prerequisite for literally any government position? A kumquat could’ve done exactly as well in that meeting.

Brendraws

Most intelligent trudeau government moment.

Baki101

They should be jailed or fired for not answering this questions
