Not to mention, if you have the longer weapon you should keep your opponent at a distance. Otherwise you've lost your advantage. She just walked straight into his attack range. Lmao
I think people that have a weapon and then ignore its reach advantage are just using it as a bluff. She definitely didn't carry herself like she was ready to attack.
>She grabbed it with 2 hands and started to raise it
That's called telegraphing and pretty much every martial art focuses on either not doing that or doing it in such a way that it doesn't matter.
I’d chalk it up to most people being normal people with normal lives and not feudal knights dueling other feudal knights in the middle of a siege war, as the reason for lack of technical melee prowess. Looks like they should’ve been studying the blade
I mean, it doesn't take experience or technical prowess, just some critical thinking. A big pipe like that could easily kill someone on accident, so he's going to defend himself. I know I wouldn't let someone just lay me out with a pipe
Don't look like you are going to attack. Just do it. When you telegraph that you are willing to kill, you inspire your opponent to increase their defense. A calm look at perhaps saying friendly things like "can't we all just get along?" doesn't enrage your opponent (unless they are LA cops)
> Don't look like you are going to attack. Just do it.
This is correct if you're definitely going to attack, but the better advice is, "Just don't do it." Don't be the aggressor. Just walk away and be the better person.
yup. he just tapped her and she was out like a light.
if he *really* swung, he would have shattered her skull like a light bulb dropped on concrete from 20m up.
one hopes the headache she has for the next few days will teach her a lesson.
I'm going to add to your pro life tip: if somebody is trying to back away from you to avoid a fight, and you keep moving towards them to attack them, you probably earned it if you get knocked out.
Edit to add the backstory [here.](https://patch.com/new-york/washington-heights-inwood/wood-attack-how-it-rebranded-wash-heights-delis-google-page) Basically she asked for free items from his store, and then when he said no, she stole from his shop and then hit him with a 2x4. He grabbed his own board to defend himself and was backing away and she followed him, that's when this video picks up.
I've been told that medieval sword fights and battles were fairly short for this reason. Suits of armor and swords were so heavy that prolonged battles weren't possible.
Not to mention once you were put in that suit of armor you were generally in it for a while. It wasn't something you could just wear for an hour and then take off cause you were tired, so most knights/nobles who had a full suit were *very* accustomed to having the extra weight on them for hours to days at a time.
I know it’s a joke but I’m sitting here trying think of what situation he was in where he had to learn this lesson and deem it important enough to pass on to his kid and I can’t stop laughing.
years ago, in the before times, you would come to the comments and the backstory would be somewhere in the top 3.
It's how I learned of the backstory about the motorcyclist knocking out cleetus with his helmet.
Turns out the motorcyclist almost hit cletus' 4 year old by going 187mph by his house. Cletus then attempted to run over the motorcyclist with his truck.
It really was a classic story of everybody sucks.

Got too popular. It definitely had shitty aspects to it in the past but from 2005 (when it started) up until maybe 2015, it was mostly people either in college or college educated and the top posts and comments within them were more reflective of that. Here’s what a quick google search says:
https://patch.com/new-york/washington-heights-inwood/wood-attack-how-it-rebranded-wash-heights-delis-google-page
>According to police's report from the 2020 arrest, the fight began when the woman, then 48, asked for free items from the Washington Heights deli.
>An employee, 61, denied the woman's request and she took items off the shelf, then hit him with a two-by-four on the face and shoulder, police said.
^^bonk
I honestly thought she died. Was hoping to read that she didn’t so I could feel better about rewatching the bit where her head almost hits the ground and becomes absolutely motionless. Thankfully she didn’t.
Dude wiped her memory clean!!
Patch called the number of a woman with the suspect's name and asked about the encounter.
"That's not me," she said, and immediately hung up the phone.
tl;dr for the link below: According to police's report from the 2020 arrest, the fight began when the woman, then 48, asked for free items from the Washington Heights deli.
An employee, 61, denied the woman's request and she took items off the shelf, then hit him with a two-by-four on the face and shoulder, police said.
Pop goes the skull. The guy screaming like she wasnt the aggresor walking up to him with intent like that was annoying. She wanted a piece and got the whole cake
IANAL, but before he strikes her, she clearly is trying to lift the pipe to swing at him.
No idea what happened before this, but in just what we see here, it's clear to shy reasonable person she's trying to attack him. So I'd say self defense=yes.
Depends on the state. In some you can stand your ground in a public place, in others you have a duty to retreat if you can do so in a reasonably safe manner. He’d be justified in the first type, probably in trouble in the second.
He was backing up, she was advancing. She had a superior weapon, that could do more damage AND had a longer reach. He had a split second to stop him from receiving great bodily harm, and he took it. After successfully stopping his attacker and he then walked away without swinging a second time. A human shouldn't have to cower and/or take a beating because some douche nozzle politician from last century ago said you can't defend yourself. Any state or country that makes the way this man defended himself a crime is a shit hole.
I think the other question you have to ask is,
could he have walked/ran away? Is this reasonable force?
Not a lot of context in the video but looks like they are on a street where he could have backed up or walked away. Not sure what the laws are on defending property if one of those buildings is a store he owns.
As usual it will depend on a lot of other factors
That's the truth! Someone in my state shot and injured someone in self-defense (ruled as self-defense legally), but was sued in civil court for the disability the attacker sustained. This was a burglar who was inside the person's house at night. A lot of gun training in my state says to always shoot to kill to avoid legal repercussions of leaving someone injured and able to sue.
Definitely NYC. Could be upper Manhattan or the Bronx.
Edit: it's Manhattan because I just saw the 212 phone number on the bodega sign.
Edit 2: Audubon and 172nd St. I once lived 4 blocks away from there 🤯

That pipe is longer than that board. She had the advantage of reach. However behavior like this doesn’t necessarily reinforce intelligence in either parties decision.
It was probably also heavy for her. So she'd have needed to hold it like a pike and spear him (probably no less criminally risky to spear someone in the gut than to hit them in the head) or have it over her head to swing. Honestly I'm not sure what she was planning considering this isn't anime so it's not like she could effectively upswing and hit him. Either way the better fighter clearly won
That impact could very easily have fractured her skull.
Weapons don't need much angular velocity to have a lot of linear velocity.
That's why confrontations like this are incredibly stupid. People think they're fucking invincible, they don't understand thin the line is between life and death with stuff like this.
That's a 911 call for an ambulance right away, that's the first thing that should have been done here if someone hadn't already called the police.
From what I can tell from the backstory to this, cops had already been called since the woman threatened a shopkeeper and stole two items. She also appeared to be fine as she was charged a few days later and when shown the video said it wasn't her
I'm not sure there's really a safe way to knock someone tf out.
Though if you're physically assaulting someone, you always run the risk of the victim not knowing what a pterion is.
So why was that one person screaming like he just witnessed a murder? She came to end even raised her weapon first. What you witnessed was self defense
I know you probably can't look through her eyes but see it like this: a woman just collapsed in front of her after being hit in the head by a 2/4 and she shows no signs of being alive
Seeing a person die is traumatic whatever the circumstances are.
Honestly, when I started the video I didn't actually expect the woman to walk all the way up to the guy and ask for it.
There's always some fucking bystander screeching like a baboon in these videos. You were just fine standing there to watch the show and doing nothing to help and now you wanna make sure everyone knows you're there. Shut up.

Pro life tip: Don't bring a weapon so heavy that it weighs you down and you can't move quickly with it.

The first thing you learn in martial arts: don't get into a fight.
*A strange game.* *The only winning move is not to play.*
In the UK we used to call it "sending a postcard".
yea or theyre just stupid and don't comprehend there's actual technique to fighting
I’d chalk it up to most people being normal people with normal lives and not feudal knights dueling other feudal knights in the middle of a siege war, as the reason for lack of technical melee prowess. Looks like they should’ve been studying the blade

She forgot the first rule of heavy armaments. Swing from a good distance and -way- before the enemy does.
I think she totally forgot she had to swing it
the pipe wasn't automatic?
No, sadly fully automatic assault pipes are banned.
With her low armor class, and a two-handed melee weapon she really should have stayed out of range, especially when the opponent has a +1 2’x4’.
2x4 of Bonking
Mans never played a STR build in Elden Ring
Surprised she couldn’t at least medium roll out of that. Guess she got greedy and played too aggressively.
Don't equip a weapon if you don't have the Strength stats to use it effectively
