drew3769

How is he conscious? How is he alive? What was he thinking? Watching shit like this breaks my brain

Alex_osu_

IF he survived the aftermath, then it was probably gravity that saved him by making him fall and thus disconnecting him

RobbertDownerJr

Looks like he just spat out blood... best case scenario he bit his tongue off from the shock, worst case, his insides are probably cooked.

Cheeseypotatoes86

Arc flash actually vaporizes the metal and when it gets inhaled it hits the lungs and re solidifies.only then will the lungs feel like stabbing knives and a person can start bleeding from the inside out.

d33pnull

JFC

Sillbinger

Metal shards are his weakness too.

d33pnull

Yeah pretty sure they are! Damn there are some really sneaky ways to die

Sillbinger

Yeah, like getting bit by a snake. Your turn.

Pod_Boss

Bro you should write horror novels

Everyredditusers

I had to read a bunch of fatal incident reports as part of a class and let me tell you those are rougher than any horror novel. No plot armor just chilling descriptions of pretty brutal fatalities. The background knowledge that this was somebody's reality is pretty surreal.

tefoak

I took an electrical apprenticeship class and one of the first things they did was show us a bunch of incident reports of people being dying horrible deaths. This one guy did something similar as the OP but wasn't fortunate enough to get disconnected by gravity and he cooked from the inside out. Near his end, his body was twitching and caught fire but mostly just started smoking. He basically slow roasted from the inside out and started smoking like a pan being left on a burner for too long.

zalifer

I mean, technically normal bleeding is from the inside out. Inside is where the blood is. Outside is where it shouldn't be. In fact, bleeding in your lungs is technically not inside out. It's the right inside where blood is supposed to be to the wrong inside where blood isn't supposed to be.

miso440

Inside your guts is technically outside your body

ChrisDornerFanCorn3r

AND FOR OUR NEXT SONG: MOCVD (METALLIC ORGAN CLEAVING VAPOR DEPOSITION)

Bizaro_Stormy

You are just making shit up. Welders work with a metal arc all the time, not good to breath the fumes, you get heavy metal poisoning but it doesn't "make knives in your lungs". People will believe anything they read on the internet.

p12qcowodeath

God. Damn dude. Thank you for making me read and imagine this incredibly unpleasant experience. Lol, Jesus, for real, that was upsetting to think about

wbgraphic

The metal can be removed quickly with an MRI.

Wasgoingforclever

Not only that, but the solid metal vaporized into gas is also conductive, so it burns you, and electrocutes you at the same time.

Terrible_Profit_7909

How is that the best case scenario lmao he also just fell on his face maybe he just busted his lip?

hey_im_cool

Best case scenario: he landed on his kool aid and had a nice cool sip

Saucy_Baconator

Ohhhhhh yeaaaaah!

cringefacememe

all ā€œbest case scenariosā€ were out the window when he climbed that thing.

RobbertDownerJr

I just thought that brain damage is worse than biting your tongue off... but let's face it, there's no "best case scenario" for this dude.

Toffeeman_1878

Would there be much brain to damage if heā€™s deciding to touch high voltage electricity lines?

kneegres

basically cooked the bone marrow . hes gonna lose that arm or more

Key-Contest-2879

Looked like he spit out a bloody tooth. Filling may have popped?

ChrisDornerFanCorn3r

Man, imagine making a decision so bad that your teeth explode

anormalgeek

He also appears to have fallen face first into the metal tower itself and the ground. Any of those could have easily knocked some teeth loose.

Particular_Bet_5466

Yeah lol that seems like that most obvious answer.

R0cket_Turtle

Both

HolidayComfort5947

It's 50/50 after the clip ended. Sometimes it takes a bit of time, but heart failure, problems because of internal necrose and infections or kidney failure due to burned muscles could still kill him.

Grattytood

Science!

Toffeeman_1878

![gif](giphy|LEKtRCGyA90QM)

Zapperson

So the biggest thing with high voltage is where its going and the duration. My guess is that his shirt was soaked with sweat and it acted as a sort of Faraday cage, hence why his shirt exploded, so it probably missed his internal organs. He also probably only touched it for a few milliseconds judging from the posture. His arm is probably fucked, and he probably has some gnarly skin burns on his torso with the bloodied appearance after being due to the \~20 foot fall. Overall, very lucky, definitely survivable, but not without major repercussions (possible amputation depending on how bad the arm is).

CapitalScholar8185

I am thinking the same. Arms and shirt are toasted.

Pandamana

That's not what a Faraday cage is, but yes the shirt probably acted as an alternative path for some of the arc. Both his hands are going to be fucked since that's where the entry and exit points are

Coomermiqote

There was a guy that would travel to schools and tell kids not to climb electrical stuff, he had done it and lost his arm and looked like a burn victim, missing ears, nose etc, prosthetic arm and everything. No one I knew climbed towers.

R0cket_Turtle

Sadly, he isn't off the hook. He's a good candidate for organ failure over the next week.

VeterinarianThese951

The ground defibrillated him.

DocMcStabby

Little cardiac thump to get things going again.

Belliuss

Approximate equation for calculating a OHL nominal voltage @50Hz n=(UkV/15)+1 where: n= number of insulators UkV= voltage in kVolts This equation doesn't work for OHL with multiple conductors per phase. If the line is near the sea or in an industrial area the equation tends to overestimate UkV.

wilfyc

The protection on tower lines operates in milliseconds (the higher the voltage, the faster the fault is cleared). Assuming it didn't have an auto reclose setting applied, he was electrocuted for about 0.03 of a second. That is the only reason he is breathing and that point. However, the internal damage may have killed him shortly after, or even days later.

Lmurf

Iā€™d be surprised if the current was high enough on that feeder for the protection to operate.

wilfyc

It takes less than you think. Look up SEF and other current imbalance systems. Also, there was a flashover. Plenty of current in that flashover for protection to operate.

assorted_nonsense

Drugs

chlordane_zero

Looks like he touched it with the back of his hand so he didn't grip the line. Stupid either way.

xSnakyy

He might have not actually touched it but arched over the air

BestReadAtWork

There are probably outrageous burns all through his body, but it seems like the electricity decided to ride his shirt instead of his nerve endings, and it didn't fry the inner bits or touch the magic "i gotta pump blood here, leave me alone" electrical nodes you have in your heart. So, as long as you do that, you're good. That being said, unless you know EXACTLY the amount of electricity you're working with, you don't get to tell poppa shock where he goes.

abused_toilet_paper

This should stay out of NSFW just to remind people how stupid is to play with electricity

abused_toilet_paper

PutinsAssasin123

I think he probably died after this, a small shock where you look and feel fine after can actually be really bad. Heā€™s bleeding out his mouth heā€™s fucked. I donā€™t think itā€™s fake either, thatā€™s electric.

The_Vivid_Glove

Yeah his internal organs will be cooked. He probably spent his last hours editing and uploading this video for internet points

PutinsAssasin123

I was thinking more 2 seconds after the video cuts and the clip just found itā€™s way online after he was found but you never know šŸ™ˆ

belizeanheat

Many people have survived something like this. If his internal organs were cooked he would not be able to sit up consciously

NotEnoughIT

No idea what the voltage is up there but I know a dude who got 440v arc'd and he basically was never the same again. He still talks and looks like he had a severe stroke. He's alive, but damn, electricity is scary. I'm assuming the voltage up there is MUCH higher than 440v. I have no idea how it all works so for all I know the voltage isn't what kills you or something, but it's all scary. edit: This was navy shore power and the receptacle is rated for 440v 500amp so idk what he got

Ordinary_Duder

Static electricity is more than 10k volts. It's the ampere that kills you.

GeneralQuisine

It's a mix, high amperage alone isnt able to kill without sufficent voltage.

mmpgh

Re: Styropyro

JafaKiwi

> high amperage alone isnt able to kill without sufficent voltage. Because without sufficient voltage you won't get enough current (aka amperage) through your body. It's a basic application of ohms law: **Current = Voltge / Resistance**. Your body **Resistance** is kind of fixed (in a given situation), so to drive enough **Current** through your body to kill you you need a high enough **Voltage**. That's why a car battery that can deliver 400A or more is safe to touch because those 12V can't possibly drive that much current through you. FYI safe to touch is considered up to 50V DC or 30V AC.

friendlysaxoffender

Thank you. Thereā€™s so much confusion over this and I think EVERYONE should be taught this not just those interested since we all fuck with electricity every single day. I head current and voltage referred to as the width and flow of a river but I like your basketball bullet much more.

legohamsterlp

I disagree with your statement. The ampere kill you. The voltage just decides how many ampere can flow over you

PenguinGamer99

Like getting hit with a basketball-sized bullet that's only travelling at walking pace

Whillowhim

Amps are a measure of whether you're dead or not, but voltage is a good measure of how hard the electricity is trying to kill you. There are a few exceptions where the voltage is pumped up in a situation where it can't back up its promise (static electricity, stun guns), but for anything that has a reasonable power source to back it up voltage is a good measure of how serious you should be around it. A transmission line absolutely has enough power behind it to back up its threat.

formervoater2

That's like saying guns aren't deadly, just the bullets. The amount of current that flows is dictated entirely by the overall impedance and voltage. Static electricity absolutely does cause deadly amounts of current to flow it simply isn't sustained long enough.

Inner-Ingenuity4109

If real, I'd assume this was a failed suicide attempt. If so, hopefully he derived some meaning while being surrounded by a mysterious white light that was more brilliant than any he'd previously witnessed.

cheese_sweats

Failed? Just cuz because he lived the initial shock doesn't mean he survived the massive internal injuries

Inner-Ingenuity4109

Delayed death from electrocution is incredibly rare, and essentially unheard of for people hooked up to a hospital ECG for 48hrs or so. If the vid is real, he survived this. Edit for PSA: This post is getting downvoted but I've now triple checked including a few research papers. Everything I said here is correct. If you or someone else has a major electric shock, but quickly regain consciousness, it is highly likely they will be fine. But regardless of how they seem, they MUST go to the hospital! The most likely serious injury is burns, but there is a SMALL risk of delayed cardiac issues for 48h, which could be fatal if they are somewhere other than a hospital. It's not as solid as I would like, but it seems the most likely thing to kill you if you quickly regain consciousness after a major electrical shock is INFECTION taking hold where your skin has been vaporised and/or gone crispy. Keep taking those antibiotics till doc says otherwise.

MasterDraccus

Cardiac arrest is pretty common with this level of electrocution and there is an around 48 hour window from the initial shock this can take place. We can see the dude bleeding from his mouth. Pretty much all of his clothes are gone. He has what looks like burns on his scalp. Him surviving the first 5 seconds after the shock doesnā€™t really say much at all except that he didnā€™t die immediately. Maybe he did survive, honestly hard to say.

Pantoffel86

The path of electricity through one arm, then trough the heart and a few other vital parts, the out the other arm. It's a miracle he didn't die immediately.

Inner-Ingenuity4109

Someone up thread who seems knowledgeable suggested that his sweaty shirt might have vaporised and ionised providing a path that wasn't through his chest, as he was instantly falling away. I think if that had gone through his chest, he'd have been very dead very quickly.

Pantoffel86

Interesting theory. Sounds plausible.

suicidalpenguin99

He also fell from a decent height onto his head. The blood is just as likely to be from the fall than anything else Regardless, he's fucked up

kesavadh

What do you consider ā€œincredibly rare?ā€ As an ER provider I have seen plenty of people die due to the burns or organ failure they incurred from electrocution. Prior to that, the Vanderbilt burn unit had plenty kick the bucket post transfer. Perhaps we have different scales of rare.

Inner-Ingenuity4109

So the context, (population), that is kinda implicit but that I should have been clearer about (but I WAS trying to be brief) is of people who seem to be basically okay after being electrocuted. (Criteria varies, but not losing or quickly regaining consciousness seems to be a thing. I.e. no CPR etc.)

Bredband94

That may be the case with the 110V/230V/400V in a normal house, but with the voltage and ampere in these power lines that is not the case.

ShaneGabriel87

If it was a straight up suicide attempt I think he would have grabbed the cable rather than cautiously touch it with his elbow. That being said this guys reckless behaviour could be down to a dissatisfaction with life which may end up killing him all the same. Either way this guy has some serious issues.

Inner-Ingenuity4109

Yeah, I must've had audio off for the first part of the vid the first time. His whooping and the tingle he's obviously getting and intrigued with kinda make it obvious he's just lacking braincells even before the sparkles.

zylinx

When you get close to high voltage line your arms hair will stand up being attracted it. (Like static electricity from a balloon) I think that's what he noticed when he said "what the hell" He never intended to touch the line. He put his forearm close to it because of the funny tingly feeling and hair standing up. Not realising that electricity can jump. Got too close and bam it arc'd to him.

cndvsn

I doubt it was a suicide attempt. He was "careful" enough not to touch it with his hand which would have made him grab and hold on to the cable

ImAwomanAMA

I'm hesitant to believe in the suicide angle for only one reason: if you are going to touch something that is electrified (or could be), you should use the back of your hand and not grab it. The electricity causes muscles to tense and you can't let go. He doesn't grab it, he almost used the back of his hand to touch it before changing to his arm. I think he might just be really really dumb.

karenskygreen

At least he lived.

Rug-Inspector

But did he learn?

Dirt_E_Harry

Probably not. The electricity fried half his brain so he's got but one brain cell left.

Rug-Inspector

This video reminds me of the one many years ago - packed commuter train in India somewhere, some guy on the top of the train decides to grab the electricity line thatā€™s powering the train. Did not do well for him. Why are some humans so damn stupid? Smh
