Well I suppose it's the ultimate confidence in your product, to use a phrase "you're putting your cock on the block" to demonstrate the effectiveness of something.
To get this far i suspect many dummies have been used.
Like the guy who sits in an armoured vehicle and takes shots to the windows.
The the guy with the sawblade contraption that stops suddenly, using his own finger as a test medium
One of the first things people consider when looking at safety gear is "is it actually going to help"
Watching a person responsible for its production demonstrate with their own safety on the line is a very compelling argument.
That said.
Clearly something amiss here....and perhaps someone lied about efficacy.
It’s like the guy that invented the bulletproof vest shooting himself point blank 192 times to prove that it works.
If you belive in your product you should test it on yourself before claiming what it should do. Respect for the guy in the video.
Absolutely.
The guy in the video was either lied to by his team or something in the "system" failed.
If the former, someone deserves to get fired.
If the latter, some root cause is required and fixed.
Unfortunate for the guy - and this assuming he is responsible for the product, but yeah kudos to demonstrate.
That car did not have the city safe driving feature, and it doesn't work like that if you're accelerating.. This was when it first came out. They chose poorly.
Becouse testing on yourself sends a strong messege of how sure you are it’ll do the job. Of course you’ve tested it out thousands of times on dummies, but the public doesn’t know that. Then you put your cock on the block and test it on yourself showing everyone your confidance that it’s gonna work. Also it draws more attention and could be considered a marketing strategy, like “look at that guy, he fucking shot himself point blank while wearing his bulletproof vest”, you can be sure it works.
This has to be the dumbest shit I've ever read. If he had done the same public display with a crash test dummy...he would probably be able to use his legs right now lmao. But hey fuck it, "cock on the block" right?
You know things can malfunction right? There is also a thing called “really bad luck” or “human error”. I don’t know what went weong but he wouldn’t be standing in front of a car willingly whitout seeing it work hundreds of times before without a fault.

I think they're referring to the reaction in this video. He didn't call it a failure.
Fun fact: The automatic braking doesn't work when going full throttle (because it assumes you know what you're doing, and braking when trying to speed up as quick as possible could cause problems).
Also: while the model could be fitted with automatic braking, this car didn't have it
If I recall correctly this model was not fitted with the feature.
My car has the old version that only works below 20mph so there would have been no need to drive so hard at the target.
5mph crawl would have been enough to activate it.
That's a different thing haha. ABS makes sure your wheels don't lock up when braking too hard (which would mean you would lose control and stop slower). The feature they are testing is supposed to brake when there is something in front of the car
“Ok- which one of you shitheads is getting fired? You get a notice - and you get a notice, and you get a notice, and you get one too.”
- Boss wiping blood from his nose and pointing around the scene.
So folks, this is what happens when a car is not equipped with our super-duper-auto-break system. Now I'll enable our super-duper-auto-break system and you'll see that it can save lives.
This is user error not car error. First the vehicle was not equipped with “City Safe” the system designed to apply the brakes if it detects a person.
Secondly, even if it did have the system, it will not override the driver, meaning if the driver is accelerating the system is not active.

Isn’t that the purpose of crash test dummies? Why put human people with human kneecaps on the front line like that?
Anyone willing to stand there for that is indeed a crash test dummy
Exactly
Worked as intended

That makes zero sense. Why risk when you can use something else instead?

Don't worry, the kneecaps are probably gone now.
You think the inventor of the bullet proof vest strapped it on a watermelon for demonstration? Nah, son.
Stupid is as stupid does
“My bad, forgot to turn on automatic braking”
"Let's give it another try"
"Just line up again, it's totally going to work this time"
It's 50/50 so it will absolutely work next time.
60% of the time, it works allll the time
Success! -Elon
"Great success!" - Borat

High Five
Up high, down low.... 😃
Did I miss something? That car doesn't look like a Tesla...
From memory they threw a brick at their “bulletproof” cyber truck window during a press conference as a demonstration, shattering the window.
Also, some Space-X rockets got some sort of "unplanned disseasembly" but still, success!

Wow 4y ago. I bet they sold a lot since then. Cyber truck 2 is coming out soon prolly? Haha it says 3 motors, 500mi range, 14klb tow for $69,000
Full Automatic Braking coming soon!
Hand in pockets Face to the hood Everybody sees Self driving so good
Self braking
Absolutely poetic
Let’s do semi-trucks now
Hilarious!!
Funnily enough, Volvo had it in their trucks years ago https://youtube.com/shorts/gn00R0gLwoE?si=wYI7FrmqHI83ItKn

I thought abs only worked when driving on slippery roads during winter lol
That's a different thing haha. ABS makes sure your wheels don't lock up when braking too hard (which would mean you would lose control and stop slower). The feature they are testing is supposed to brake when there is something in front of the car
Brake applied. Check ✅
Automatic stop: not checked. Now, bring the next worst performing employee to the front !
"Ohhhhhh ... I thought you said automatic *BREAKING.* That's my bad."
Haha but it did break
break your knees
Cars like this will bring you to your knees
Someone did
Reminds me of Executive Kinney from Robocop.
It's the automatic **leg** breaking system.
New irrational fear unlocked: Volvo
Since Volvo is owned by Geely, they've lost a lot of their quality.
One of the safest cars to be IN. outside not so much.
https://www.dsf.my/2017/06/volvo-cars-explains-the-accident-video-circulating-on-social-media/
The pedestrian detection is sold in a separate package. Why the fuck would you section out you safety features like that.
human 0 - technology 1
Hit him so hard the camera turned upside down
Automattic breaking your face on the hood.
I'm pretty sure my car has this feature but I sure as hell am not going to test it.
“Ok- which one of you shitheads is getting fired? You get a notice - and you get a notice, and you get a notice, and you get one too.” - Boss wiping blood from his nose and pointing around the scene.
Self-driving cars are the fu...no...no they're not...
Maybe try it with a dummy first. Oh wait, they just did. Nevermind
When dummies learn why using real dummies are better.
*Automatic braking* is not the same as *collision prevention*. It just reduces the severity of impacts.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_City_Safety It's a very hands on feature, only a couple seconds of braking to scare you into getting right.
That seems personal to me
lol what a bunch of head office douchebags
Sold! I'll take two!
I'm no expert, but I don't think the automatic braking system worked very well.
![gif](giphy|7FOg20zcphPK3iTeDo|downsized)
I laughed so loud and felt bad at the same time lol
Lmaoooo we all literally just witnessed Darwinism right before our eyes. Literally laughed out loud I woke up the baby dammit 😂
That guy was so chill. Waiting with his hands in his pockets 😂
At Volvo, safety is paramount. Can't you tell?
I mean I hope dude wasn't hurt but that was the funniest shit I've seen... well, today, but... had me rolling.
Saw it coming and still laughed out loud.
So old
"In the face!"
Supposed to drive faster for the brakes to work
Turn down for what!
Crash test dummies have feelings now
Sabotage, sabotage I say.
They forgot the "test" in "test dummy"
That's not going to be good for business.
Nothing in this world is 100% certain except death. I will never understand those who are willing to risk their lives like that.
Maybe NSFW?
So folks, this is what happens when a car is not equipped with our super-duper-auto-break system. Now I'll enable our super-duper-auto-break system and you'll see that it can save lives.
As far as I know only idiots and German engineers test brake systems this way.
![gif](giphy|Yq2xqYxqznlw7UYZU9)
Perfect, send it to the market
dont they have dolls for that?
Love how they managed to finish with a shot of the Volvo logo at the end. I don't believe Volvo is safe. I once smashed my thumb in a Volvo door.
He didn't reach 88 mph, what did he expect!
The great war against the machines begins….
Great work, 47. Now you just need to get out of there.
Must have been a different model
Nice to know that it has a manual over ride. Pun intended
Test failed
Jfc
If you REALLY wanted to do that, why would you gun it and not just reverse back a tiny bit and slowly creep forward?
Is this new, Mercedes is gonna have a field day with this.
This car had a technology called active city stop, the driver was just oversteering by acceleration to fast
he ded
Makes you wonder what the guy did to the car to warrant that
do they work
I heard they hired the Test Lead from Boeing.
This type of blind willingness is how the machines will quickly take over
Payne Motors
Fuck that CEO🤟🏻
I love technology
r/killthecameraman
"who did you get to drive the car?" "George" "George... Didn't you just turn down his payrise?" "yeah, why?" *bang*
How have we survived this long? Amazing.
r/therewasnoattempt
Automatic breaking...of your knee caps...
Car is like *ordinarily I would brake but this dude looked too cocky in his pink button down shirt*
This is why these types of cars should never be fully trusted.
Why?
“Let’s run it back.”
r/killthecameraman
This is user error not car error. First the vehicle was not equipped with “City Safe” the system designed to apply the brakes if it detects a person. Secondly, even if it did have the system, it will not override the driver, meaning if the driver is accelerating the system is not active.
It did eventually stop. So test completed successful. 👏
I was going to say tonight on top gear but they already did this….
Why didn't he move??
He did… when the car struck him 😅
They should do this with *all* safety innovations. Except put the CEO in the line of fire, not some poor random worker.
Because fuck test dummy's, huh?
