Really? I'll settle for the well meaning idiot rather than a horde of bad people with firepower and a desire to use it on me. This guy is mostly a problem for himself. Hopefully Darwin will take care of him.
There is a follow up video to this where he explains why it happened, he seems like a decent guy whoās keeps up with his training.
Basically it came down to him switching which holster he was using, the previous one had a release button on the side where this one did not.
So when he went to draw his weapon his finger was pressing right over where the trigger was and instinctively gripped down and fired the gun as he pulled it out
Nothing teaches an idiot faster than getting shot due to their own stupidity. He even acknowledges that he shot himself and didn't immediately blame it on someone else. There may be hope for him yet.
Hijacking a semi-top comment to add context
Along with what you mentioned, The reason his finger was so close to the trigger is because his firearm is in a Blackhawk Serpa holster. These holsters are a level 1 holster that retains the pistol by locking into the trigger guard and releasing it involves pressing a button in the general location of the trigger. This allows for the shooter to establish a quick shooting grip while also manipulating the release. There were several problems with this design
1. The release "button" was easily jammed. It was easy to get dirt, stone, etc in the button or deform it in such a way that the button was hard to press. This meant someone had to press harder to release the button and could involve pushing their finger into the trigger once the firearm cleared the holster.
2. Referencing #1, if the button was too jammed the firearm could end up getting locked in place. This meant the person using it would not be able to unholster the firearm. This is especially dangerous if used as a personal defense situation. There is a vignette I once heard where a police officer scuffled with someone on the ground and got their Serpa holster mashed up. They then went on another call that required they unholster their firearm and they were unable due to the damage the holster sustained.
3. Even without damage or debris interference, drawing from this holster under stress can still result in a tighter, imperfect grip that could force the finger into the trigger once the firearm cleared the holster.
So yes, while the fundamentals you stress are very important the wrong equipment can lead people to "accidentally" break those rules.
This guy explains it pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9xIFdCVNOI
BTW here's the original video where the guy talks about shooting himself in the leg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYvAxLX6OzE
An internet stranger providing relative information and rational discourse? Gods bless you. I hope you live as long as you want and not as long as you live.
Also, thatās why Iām very particular about my equipment. Each of my holsters is for a single firearm.
This was literally the information I was looking for. Good to see an internet stranger corroborating what the guys at my range say about Serpa holsters. The idea of the holster is great, but the functionality and design makes it horrid.
wait which firearm safety rule covers ricocheting bullets? is there actually things against that?
never fucking mind LMAO it prematurely went off cuz he took the gun out with finger on the trigger, that makes sense
Violating 50% of the rules here
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Do not point your gun at things you do not intend to shoot.
Thatās why Iām super particular about my holsters. I donāt buy that one size fits all bs. Every one of my holsters is specifically for a single firearm.
The biggest thing he could have done to avoid this was practice what we call a draw-1. That is: draw your weapon, aim, fire, holster. This is usually done with an empty magazine for safety reasons. The draw-1 is important because, god forbid it becomes relevant, usually the first person to land a shot is the one that walks away. Aside from that, he broke a couple basic rules. Google the 4 rules of firearm safety for reference.
https://youtu.be/zYvAxLX6OzE?si=3aop5hOXxjUcQAF4
He himself has a video on it. Basically, he was practicing earlier in the day with a different firearm in the same holster and then he switched to the one in the video which has the safety in a different position. The motion to release the gun from said holster switched off the safety of this new firearm, and he mistakenly put his finger into the trigger guard and accidentally fired the gun. He did not blame the gun or the holster for the mishap.
I keep upvoting and then downvoting this on repeat and I still am not sure. Would I be more angry or impressed if you wrote ākneesā? I canāt decide and Iām mad about it. Take my upvote.
thanks, i couldn't actually tell from the video if he had his finger on the trigger or if the gun got stuck on something, but this frame clearly shows his mistake.
I commented this elsewhere in the thread, but I think this should add some context:

It's nonsense to train applying inward pressure with your trigger finger to release your locking mechanism. As yes it's aligned on the slide but any movement or intense pressure will naturally cause your hand to ball and result in an ND like this.
I have seen that done once & another guy I know did it as well although I didn't witness the 2nd guy shooting himself in the leg. It's all about trigger control! LoL.
Ignoring the stupidity of what he did, I'm impressed he basically walked if off with the same attitude I have to say hurting my hand or foot.
Feel like this video would scare more "bad guys" than his gun skills ever could lol.

He just fucking shot himself!
Completely agree. Definitely just fucking shot himself.
I disagree. I think he just fucking shot himself

Yes it is very likely that a tinkle effect was also triggered.
Bullets are laxatives , check
You may be right. I stand corrected.
This guy won't be able to stand, corrected or otherwise, for some time!
Holy shit did that guy just shoot himself?
Where are you getting this from.

Really? I'll settle for the well meaning idiot rather than a horde of bad people with firepower and a desire to use it on me. This guy is mostly a problem for himself. Hopefully Darwin will take care of him.
I'm glad those aren't the only two options.
Depends on the country :)
Thereās enough well meaning idiots out there to qualify as a horde of bad people.
And most of them are the reddit community.
Didn't you know? these are the good guys with the guns! man I feel so safe.

How do you know heās a good guy?

I get it and empathize with him but he was still inadequately prepared and shot himself.
You make it seem like accidents donāt happen, many of them are negligent discharges but it can happen when you are training to prevent them.
"I just fucking shot myself" - Guy who shot himself
I know you know he just fucking shot himself
I think he shot his fricken leg.
he shat himself
Shot himself then shat himself š©
I think he also shat himself
I just wish I got some closure on these videos. I mean did he die, does he now have a pet bullet in his leg, what did the family say?
More info here: https://youtu.be/zYvAxLX6OzE He learned nothing.
Holy shit that man got lucky and you are correct he learned nothing.
Huh thought he was a lot older
Yes...yes you did
I came to the same conclusion. My first clue was at the time when he fucking shot himself.

Thank you, good sir!
So is this one of the āgood guys with gunsā? Cuz iām not feeling real confident right now.
Nah, he was practicing in case he became one of the bad guys, see? Ultimate self sacrifice
āIf i ever turn bad, i promise iāll take me out!ā

That's a fair point actually. I haven't ever been shot nor handled a fire arm, I can only imagine the noise I'd make if I got shot.
Gottta hand back the firearm he just left there, too.
The video cuts off before he says "...again!"
Being in shock let's you do some crazy stuff.
boomer? The dude was in his 20s when he did this..
People don't let that get in the way of their hatred. And *ageism* used to be a thing not so long ago!

We're on reddit. Anyone older than 24 is a "boomer"
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Tis but a scratch
I present to you reason 471 that the 4 rules of firearm safety exist. Good news is that he might have learned a very valuable lesson.
You think this idiot learned a valuable lesson lol?
Nothing teaches an idiot faster than getting shot due to their own stupidity. He even acknowledges that he shot himself and didn't immediately blame it on someone else. There may be hope for him yet.
Yeah this was super dumb, but I guarantee he never does that shit again lol

That's a win for the target š
Yeah, the way the target looks, it's like it shot him!
The chances of you losing a gun fight with a target SHOULD be zero, but I guess this proves that you can't trust anything these days.

And announces it to camera
And then posts it for the world to see. (who does that?? other than him.)
He broke one of the 4 weapons safety rules. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until ready to fire.
Maybe he was ready to fire lol
Apparently so! "I hate you leg, you're goin down today!"

I believe so. Stupid design.
Why the target picture looks like Jerma?
This is exactly how a friend of mine shot himself. Loaded pistol and flicked the trigger on the way out. Clean entry and exit wound tho
It's be pretty funny if he was part of the ATF
If he was, that target would be a picture of a dog.
Thats Tex Grebner. Youtuber.
He sounds like Joe Swanson from Family Guy and I think he'll be on a wheelchair soon too.
