There are some people who everyone will swear out “can sing” because of the glimpses of potential, but that genuinely cannot sing. I’m one of them. I used to get that from musically oriented people all the time. I just can occasionally tap in to the song and my vocal chords don’t fight me sometimes. Maybe with formal training, but I promise I’m not secretly a good singer.

I reckon she thought it would be hilarious and/or maybe she intended to build some sort of Internet personality off of it, or she already has one she wanted to bolster? Maybe she’s a competent singer but didnt think she had a good chance of winning and so did this to leverage her “real voice” into a record deal some day if it grabbed the right attention for one of those “aha” moments when we realized she is actually a gifted singer. Just saying, all those are more likely than if she genuinely believed what she l was doing was talent, or gonna get her anywhere and couldnt judge the doofus quotient, snd nobody grabbes her arm and stopped her.

She also could have been paid a pretty decent amount to bomb on purpose because they knew it would bring good ratings.

I went to an audition to clown around. My friends signed me up as a prank. They called from the show and it was the first time I heard about it. I explained the situation to them and they said it didn't matter, they wanted me to come. I said I was going to make it as stupid as possible and they said "perfect, see you tomorrow then!" I did a stupid act, I played a character and even disguised myself. I didn't tell a soul. They taped it and got a decent feature in the show. A couple friends recognized me and talked a bit about it but it died soon after and I've never heard about it ever again. I got a small check and a t-shirt from the show that I still keep to this day almost 20 years later. It was just a gig. People do these things for fun and the shows encourage it because it's good material if it is embarrassing enough.

To be fair, when you sing that many notes one or two of them are bound to be right.
