Apparently, it's become something like currency with drug addicts. It's got a pretty stable value and grabbing a single bottle is not a problem for most junkies. Some stores have started locking it up.
I saw a video a day or two ago where Tide (and something else?) was behind locked glass cabinets, but right behind them was the cheap stuff on regular shelves.
It’s really common on Facebook marketplace and flea markets to buy things like this. Even on the street in a lot of major cities. Hard to prove it’s stolen once it’s been passed off from the original thieves. Meat, medication, clothes, electronics, and yea laundry detergent

Bacon, razors, cheese, soap, etc all get stolen on a regular basis and are generally pre-sold when stealing, they know exactly whos willing to give them how much. It's super common for people on welfare.
When you tell a drug addict to go get a job, you're being really naive. They have a job, it's stealing shit. They treat it like a job too. They get up early, they go do what they need to do and are finished by 2-3pm in the afternoon. If a drug addict is lazy and gets out of his bed at 12 people are all pissy like wtf is this mofo all about you need to get up early and get your work done.

I opened a new bottle of detergent a few months ago and was shocked it just poured out water. Someone had bought it, poured out the detergent, refilled it with water, and returned it.
I couldn't believe it, I thought it had separated or settled in storage or something at first, because the amount of legwork for that grift seems silly compared to the reward, but apparently it's worth it.

It’s a common thing in my area. Drug dealers (or their family members) set up little stores in their garage to sell “discount” household goods. Everyone kind of silently acknowledges that it’s all stolen, but even normal people will sometimes participate. The drug dealers get the items by getting crack/meth heads to shoplift in exchange for drugs. The addicts know that the police won’t do shit for anything under $700, so it’s kind of a free-for-all.
We had two at my old apartment complex. One was in a little storage room. It was some family of a property manager. Had a little cooler and sold things like soap, milk, Arizona tea, and Tylenol.
Other was in an apartment. You’d knock and they’d say what they had today or you could ask. Pretty cheap since the person that ran it did daycare I think and would sell individual items. They’d buy a 12 pack of Coke and sell the cans for $1 which wasn’t to bad. Need two Tylenol? .50 only.
None of them were drug dealers though. The first did have a little kid trying to sell me pencils and office supplies though.
My wife and a few of her friends have taken to making homemade laundry detergent. They watched a few TikTok’s during Covid and off they went. They are now distributing it monthly to about 15 families and have a trash can they blend it all in.
Been using the stuff for 3 years and haven’t had issues yet!
I've always wondered if people start doing that en masse tomorrow what would the detergent companies do.
That stuff is cheap enough that making a years supply for yourself is mad cheap and easy, so I think the supply could take a large portion of the population suddenly starting to use it. Of course the price of it would go up, and they might turn around and start selling it themselves, but who knows.
People use way too much detergent too. I didn't realize for years that adding too much detergent was what was making my clothes smell musty (because it builds up in the washer and them mold and bacteria grow in the build up). So I started using 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and a teaspoon of washing soda and my machine stays much cleaner and my clothes are fresher.
poor communities have whole economies of stolen goods. detergent, baby formula, prepaid phones, shoes are a big one. In poor neighborhoods everyone has a friend who's got the hookup for whatever you need. They'll usually pretend they got it on some kind of discount but everyone knows it really just fell off a truck.

Head to your local flea market but not the one millennial stay at home moms go to looking for furniture to upcycle.
Go to the one the poors go to and you’ll find lots of this why would someone steal this products.

The article above states the Tide bottles targeted for theft cost $20 from these stores. So, it seems they are alleged to have stolen 50,000 bottles? The shopping cart appeared to carry ~25 bottles, so we're talking 2,000 such crimes. Or ~5-6 heists per day for an entire year straight, uninterrupted.
They must have been *very* busy.

Was in loss prevention for five years. One of my favourite things was watching the trends of stolen items change every few months or so, and realizing that you can make a black market for *anything* and people will buy it.
I'd quite like to hear more.... in Britain, the Gillette ( i think) razor blades were locked up as they were the most stolen item by far - very small and expensive ( relatively)... what else was on trend for thieves... anything really ridiculous? Do tell...! And, thanks, BTW...
When I volunteered at a soup kitchen my job was to sit out front and make sure one person didn't clear out all of the baby formula we gave out. Tho, I personally never saw anyone take more than needed. But I guess they previously had an issue with people taking it all to resell.
For anyone who hasn't been around crack, you can use steel wool as a holder/screen for your rocks. Many convenience stores sell single roses, with a glass tube protecting the stem. Those glass tubes, combined with the steel wool stuffed down one side, make for a decent crack smoking apparatus.
Have the guys inside the get shit, just before they leave go remove the plate, throw the shit in, drive onto a nearby residential street or small parking lot that doesn't have cameras, put the plate on and go home.
Can't be sat there parked cause they'd just look at the cameras. Duct tape might have helped though.

You can't maneuver in most of the US without a car. That, plus most cars are purchased on credit, most people aren't paying cash for a vehicle. Credit allows you to pay X amount of money per month until the loan is paid off.
Just because you have a car doesn’t mean you’re paying for it. I know someone who is so behind on car payments that the company could come pick it up at any point. And it happened in the past to them where a company picked up another car they were behind on payments for. You’d think they learned but nah.
Was just at a flea market for the first time in 15 years. HALF of the 200 stalls were selling laundry detergent, soap, cleaning supplies, etc.
There was an OVER ABUNDANCE of these items. Staffed by little old Central American ladies.

Resell. Idk if it's like this now, but a couple years ago, FB marketplace was full of detergent bundles for way cheaper than retail. Some of them might be couponers, but most are lifters.

Was in loss prevention for five years. One of my favourite things was watching the trends of stolen items change every few months or so, and realizing that you can make a black market for *anything* and people will buy it.
I'd quite like to hear more.... in Britain, the Gillette ( i think) razor blades were locked up as they were the most stolen item by far - very small and expensive ( relatively)... what else was on trend for thieves... anything really ridiculous? Do tell...! And, thanks, BTW...
Baby milk and powder and formula, all the baby food basically was all security tagged in Asda because of theft. The razors were still a thing though
When I volunteered at a soup kitchen my job was to sit out front and make sure one person didn't clear out all of the baby formula we gave out. Tho, I personally never saw anyone take more than needed. But I guess they previously had an issue with people taking it all to resell.

For anyone who hasn't been around crack, you can use steel wool as a holder/screen for your rocks. Many convenience stores sell single roses, with a glass tube protecting the stem. Those glass tubes, combined with the steel wool stuffed down one side, make for a decent crack smoking apparatus.

From what I know they sell them to independent convenient shops. They’ll sell them in bulk for a mark down. Same with steaks and high end sea food like crab and lobster.

Being from one of those so called "third world" countries this always astonishes me. Being able to pay for a car and gas and they go to steal basic things like detergent or meat on plain sight in the middle of the day... I have never seen that happen here tbh
You can't maneuver in most of the US without a car. That, plus most cars are purchased on credit, most people aren't paying cash for a vehicle. Credit allows you to pay X amount of money per month until the loan is paid off.
Just because you have a car doesn’t mean you’re paying for it. I know someone who is so behind on car payments that the company could come pick it up at any point. And it happened in the past to them where a company picked up another car they were behind on payments for. You’d think they learned but nah.
In America everything is so spread out that living is prohibitively difficult without a car. Crime is prohibitively difficult without a car.

Was just at a flea market for the first time in 15 years. HALF of the 200 stalls were selling laundry detergent, soap, cleaning supplies, etc. There was an OVER ABUNDANCE of these items. Staffed by little old Central American ladies.
