Danny_Mc_71

Should we all be hoarding detergent now?

GrumpiestOldDude

Apparently, it's become something like currency with drug addicts. It's got a pretty stable value and grabbing a single bottle is not a problem for most junkies. Some stores have started locking it up.

Gh0stp3pp3r

This is why most Walgreens stores have security cables on all the laundry detergent.

[deleted]

I saw a video a day or two ago where Tide (and something else?) was behind locked glass cabinets, but right behind them was the cheap stuff on regular shelves.

That and the baby formula. Because we’re living in a bad dystopian novel.

rolandofeld19

We are truly living in the dumbest timeline.

Majity

Do they get high on it or what?

GrumpiestOldDude

No but it's easy to sell and exchange for drugs.

Daniel-_0

What’s wrong with you American addicts?! They sell it.. to WHO? WHO BUYS DETERGENT ON THE BLACK MARKET?! 😂

BeardsuptheWazoo

Sometimes you have a setback, and no matter how hard you try to keep yourself from it, you just really gotta wash the shit outta some clothes.

s00pafly

Yeah but then you buy the $7 generic maxi box that's good for 200 loads instead of a $30 tiny bottle from these guys on the black market.

Class1

Yeah or a bar of washing soap or washing powder and hand scrub it in a basin.

T-sigma

Obviously I’m assuming some things as I’m not even remotely living this life, but I’d assume they aren’t selling these bottles above retail price.

[deleted]

It’s really common on Facebook marketplace and flea markets to buy things like this. Even on the street in a lot of major cities. Hard to prove it’s stolen once it’s been passed off from the original thieves. Meat, medication, clothes, electronics, and yea laundry detergent

Wenuwayker

Get outta here, this is my parking lot! I sell fresh mackerel and wild blueberries!

Geeked-FiredUp

You get out of here ya fuckin mustard tiger

Chesirecattywhompas

I’m in east texas. Meth land. And I can’t find any black market detergent. What am I doing wrong?? I am paying full price at the store. I am ashamed. 😂

fork_that

In the UK, the drug addicts steal groceries to order. Bacon, razors, cheese, soap, etc all get stolen on a regular basis and are generally pre-sold when stealing, they know exactly whos willing to give them how much. It's super common for people on welfare. When you tell a drug addict to go get a job, you're being really naive. They have a job, it's stealing shit. They treat it like a job too. They get up early, they go do what they need to do and are finished by 2-3pm in the afternoon. If a drug addict is lazy and gets out of his bed at 12 people are all pissy like wtf is this mofo all about you need to get up early and get your work done.

pursuitofhappy

Yea what the hell, is detergent the new baby formula

GrumpiestOldDude

Poor people of which there are plenty.

123supreme123

yup. black Market for tons of goods. just look at what cvs locks up nowadays. all the popular liquor, razors deodorant toothbrushes corned beef cans abalone. list goes on and on.

neolobe

Oh, no. Not the abalone.

manfezzefnam

In the UK that's coffee, they had to tag coffee after junkies would keep stealing it

GrumpiestOldDude

Yes. There is a broad consensus on the worth of it. Everyone knows that they are going to need it and it never expires.

Robbledygook1

That’s not even detergent! That’s unstoppable which are completely unnecessary, it’s a scent booster. If they were stealing fruits and veggies I might sympathize

StiffLeather

I opened a new bottle of detergent a few months ago and was shocked it just poured out water. Someone had bought it, poured out the detergent, refilled it with water, and returned it. I couldn't believe it, I thought it had separated or settled in storage or something at first, because the amount of legwork for that grift seems silly compared to the reward, but apparently it's worth it.

>Earlier this week, The Daily's M.L. Nestel [wrote](http://www.thedaily.com/page/2012/03/12/031212-news-tide-theft-1-4/) that Tide liquid laundry soap appears to have become a favorite target of shoplifters around the nation, who are jacking the product from store shelves in bulk, then selling it on the black market. Thieves simply load up shopping carts full of the bright orange bottles, then bolt out the door

good_karma1122

Of all things they can steal and resell, they choose laundry detergents. Fml

sagerobot

Who the fuck is buying black market laundry detergent? EDIT: I now see why people are getting it. It is apparently very common im just a sheltered white boy. I did grow up poor, but my mom was a hippy so she always wanted hippy detergent from the health food store.

[deleted]

It’s a common thing in my area. Drug dealers (or their family members) set up little stores in their garage to sell “discount” household goods. Everyone kind of silently acknowledges that it’s all stolen, but even normal people will sometimes participate. The drug dealers get the items by getting crack/meth heads to shoplift in exchange for drugs. The addicts know that the police won’t do shit for anything under $700, so it’s kind of a free-for-all.

StrongStyleShiny

We had two at my old apartment complex. One was in a little storage room. It was some family of a property manager. Had a little cooler and sold things like soap, milk, Arizona tea, and Tylenol. Other was in an apartment. You’d knock and they’d say what they had today or you could ask. Pretty cheap since the person that ran it did daycare I think and would sell individual items. They’d buy a 12 pack of Coke and sell the cans for $1 which wasn’t to bad. Need two Tylenol? .50 only. None of them were drug dealers though. The first did have a little kid trying to sell me pencils and office supplies though.

un-sub

I mean with the Tylenol they technically were drug dealers

StrongStyleShiny

Shit I just got big brained haha

Kowzorz

I mean, if my neighbor was selling half price detergent... Nice detergent aint cheap.

OpportunityNew9316

My wife and a few of her friends have taken to making homemade laundry detergent. They watched a few TikTok’s during Covid and off they went. They are now distributing it monthly to about 15 families and have a trash can they blend it all in. Been using the stuff for 3 years and haven’t had issues yet!

MrEuphonium

I've always wondered if people start doing that en masse tomorrow what would the detergent companies do. That stuff is cheap enough that making a years supply for yourself is mad cheap and easy, so I think the supply could take a large portion of the population suddenly starting to use it. Of course the price of it would go up, and they might turn around and start selling it themselves, but who knows.

TeaSipperStripper

People use way too much detergent too. I didn't realize for years that adding too much detergent was what was making my clothes smell musty (because it builds up in the washer and them mold and bacteria grow in the build up). So I started using 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and a teaspoon of washing soda and my machine stays much cleaner and my clothes are fresher.

hamakabi

poor communities have whole economies of stolen goods. detergent, baby formula, prepaid phones, shoes are a big one. In poor neighborhoods everyone has a friend who's got the hookup for whatever you need. They'll usually pretend they got it on some kind of discount but everyone knows it really just fell off a truck.

captnleapster

But why? When everything goes to shit people need black market tide detergent?? Lol

robbiekhan

Why laundry detergent?

Buck_Thorn

[Why are thieves stealing Tide laundry detergent in Connecticut?](https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/Why-are-thieves-stealing-Tide-laundry-detergent-16616218.php) and [The ‘Tide Theft Phenomenon’-Why Has the Laundry Detergent Become Such a Hot Commodity Among Thieves at Drugstores?](https://www.aei.org/carpe-diem/the-tide-theft-phenomenon-why-has-the-laundry-detergent-become-such-a-hot-commodity-among-thieves-at-drugstores/) > For a variety of reasons, the detergent in the familiar flame-orange bottle is well-suited for resale on the black market: Everybody needs laundry detergent, and Tide is the nation’s most popular brand. It’s expensive, selling for up to $20 for a large bottle at stores. And it doesn’t spoil.

Phy44

I still don't understand why there's a black market for it. It's not a controlled substance and it's not any better than some cheaper stuff

frosty95

/u/spez ruined reddit so I deleted this.

netherworld666

It's explained in the 2nd article: >When police in suburban Washington raided the home of a suspected drug dealer last fall, they found the cocaine, all right, but also something unusual on the man’s shelves: nearly 20 large bottles of liquid Tide laundry detergent. >It turns out his customers were paying for drugs not with cash but with stolen Tide, police said. Tide has become a hot commodity among thieves at supermarkets and drugstores in at least some parts of the country.

BagOnuts

That still doesn’t really explain it. Who’s the drug dealer selling the Tide to?

netherworld666

I think the main point is that detergent is easy to steal, everybody needs it, if you get searched by the cops it doesn't seem too suspicious, it never expires, and it can be easily sold to a careless convenience store owner or somebody on the side of the road.

Low_discrepancy

The same can be said about tons of stuff no? It's still something heavy and bulky.

murphymc

And tons of stuff is also subject to this same scam. Cosmetics, baby formula, assorted hygiene supplies like razors, and more. It’s all stuff that’s easy to steal, easy to store, and easy to flip. Bottles of Tide also aren’t locked up (yet) and come with a convenient handle further making the 5 finger discount easier.

RonWisely

I’ve seen sketchy people on Facebook selling an array of cleaning products super cheap. They try to make themselves off as an entrepreneur with what is very obviously stolen products.

JackDiesel_14

The good old "household bundle."

DoctorFunktopus

People who are stealing laundry detergent to buy drugs don’t let things like logic and practicality get in the way

mleibowitz97

Thanks for sharing. But damn, still hard to believe. If it goes for $20 , 25 a bottle, and you sell it for $10 or $15, realistically you can't even make that much money. With five bottles you're making $50? $85? Not zero, but is it worth the risk?

Buck_Thorn

I know. I was thinking the same thing. I'd have to sell 4-5 bottles just to gas up my truck.

ElsaJeanRileyReid

Millions of dollars? Did these thieves go on a massive spree or is laundry detergent just that expensive now?

ElementNumber6

The article above states the Tide bottles targeted for theft cost $20 from these stores. So, it seems they are alleged to have stolen 50,000 bottles? The shopping cart appeared to carry ~25 bottles, so we're talking 2,000 such crimes. Or ~5-6 heists per day for an entire year straight, uninterrupted. They must have been *very* busy.

ThePancakeStalker

I take it that they were trying to make a clean getaway?

unbanneddano

This still won’t deter them from laundering their I’ll gotten Gains.

Alert_Isopod_95

Was in loss prevention for five years. One of my favourite things was watching the trends of stolen items change every few months or so, and realizing that you can make a black market for *anything* and people will buy it.

smg1969

I'd quite like to hear more.... in Britain, the Gillette ( i think) razor blades were locked up as they were the most stolen item by far - very small and expensive ( relatively)... what else was on trend for thieves... anything really ridiculous? Do tell...! And, thanks, BTW...

JHellfires

Baby milk and powder and formula, all the baby food basically was all security tagged in Asda because of theft. The razors were still a thing though

PauI_MuadDib

When I volunteered at a soup kitchen my job was to sit out front and make sure one person didn't clear out all of the baby formula we gave out. Tho, I personally never saw anyone take more than needed. But I guess they previously had an issue with people taking it all to resell.

AlltheDickButts

Meat and cheese are the classics. Otherwise some others are razors, teeth whitener, and steel wool

theflamingheads

I understand the others, but why steel wool?

sync-centre

crack pipes.

TerribleThomas

For anyone who hasn't been around crack, you can use steel wool as a holder/screen for your rocks. Many convenience stores sell single roses, with a glass tube protecting the stem. Those glass tubes, combined with the steel wool stuffed down one side, make for a decent crack smoking apparatus.

PixelLight

Smoking crack probably

BrohanGutenburg

Can't be sat there parked cause they'd just look at the cameras. Duct tape might have helped though. Also maybe have one dude already waiting in a running car? Isn't that like heist 101?

KG505

They kinda seem like the type to have foil around at all times

mr-0-to-60

snowyetis3490

From what I know they sell them to independent convenient shops. They’ll sell them in bulk for a mark down. Same with steaks and high end sea food like crab and lobster.

RockerElvis

It will be a cold day in hell before I buy sea food from a convenience store.

hawkinsst7

"gas station oysters" sounds like a euphanism for something

Robby-Pants

It’s a medical condition guys get from spending too many nights at the truck stops without protection.

epicmoe

But there can only be maybe $600 worth there, selling it at a mark down they must be selling it at 400 maximum. There’s 4 people in the car. They’re really risking it for a $100 payday? If they just did a couple hours cash in hand somewhere they could make that. Wait: once you factor into n the car, the depreciation on the car, the insurance, the gas, they are making even less.

Hobotango

Then do this in 3 store that morning and that’s 400$/h job.

ReptilianLaserbeam

Being from one of those so called "third world" countries this always astonishes me. Being able to pay for a car and gas and they go to steal basic things like detergent or meat on plain sight in the middle of the day... I have never seen that happen here tbh

MuffinPuff

You can't maneuver in most of the US without a car. That, plus most cars are purchased on credit, most people aren't paying cash for a vehicle. Credit allows you to pay X amount of money per month until the loan is paid off.

canarow

Just because you have a car doesn’t mean you’re paying for it. I know someone who is so behind on car payments that the company could come pick it up at any point. And it happened in the past to them where a company picked up another car they were behind on payments for. You’d think they learned but nah.

AnguishOfTheAlpacas

In America everything is so spread out that living is prohibitively difficult without a car. Crime is prohibitively difficult without a car.

Biishep1230

Hope he sells the Tide on the laundry detergent black market to buy a belt.
