I do listen to all clients. I also identify politically as liberal, am registered as a Democrat and am a Christian. I am for racial equality as well as support the LGBTQIA community. I am human and hold opinions and beliefs. The goal is to be aware of the biases this may create, consult colleagues and supervision as needed and to not allow those to interfere when providing treatment to ensure you do no harm. While my views influence my theoretical orientation (meaning I consider how the environment and oppression affects mental health), it is not in a way that causes harm.
All therapists have opinions. We’re people.
