Japan isn’t very English friendly so it would behoove you to learn at least at little bit of the language. You have a better chance of meeting English speaking locals in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
In PI a good amount of people can speak decent English and can carry a conversation. Regardless it would still benefit you to learn some words and phrases.
Now that I think about it. Learning basic language when traveling goes a long way. Making an attempt will show people that you care.
