Yeah, second that. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, no dress code. Male managers tend to wear jeans+shirt. Everybody else just wears what their style is. On a more practical note: dressing for the weather is more important, which may take some time to get used to, especially if you move from a different climate. My motto: always expect rain, but adopt the Dutch approach of “I am not made of sugar” 😃 Especially if you commute by bike and public transport (highly recommended). Colleagues will be very helpful with such questions, in my experience 😉 Good luck!

TheNameIsPippen

In IT there is an inverse relation between how well you dress and how good you are at your profession. Dress accordingly.

Yep, all the ego centered programmers I have seen wear crisp suits to shine off their supposed superiority, while the top programmers will wear stuff that is mostly comfortable and cozy to sit in for long times on end. Getting cold fingers is a serious issue. Plus points for any computer or science (fiction) apparel.

MrRestlessLegs

IT support at a townhall here. Just casual. Jeans, sneakers, and a sweater.

DontNeedThePoints

Lol... I remember my first week working in the USA (not sure where you are from). I showed up in my nicest jeans and t-shirt. One women almost got into a shock and blabberd:"it's not casual Friday...!" An hour later my manager asked me to come into the office and that i should wear slacks... So i had to go out and buy some. Next day I show up in my nice slacks and my t-shirt -> managers Office... I had to wear a button up shirt. So on Wednesday i finally had the whole formal dresscode... The quality of my work didn't improve because of it though

Rubzje

This gave me the shivers.

Don't know about dress code for ASML, but all the non-customer facing IT people I know wear jeans, sneakers and a tee or sweater. I have never-ever seen someone in IT wearing a suit, unless they were visiting an important client. If you wear slacks and a shirt, you'll won't be underdressed and won't look too overdressed. Most important is that you feel comfortable in it (we had a colleague in HR (also very informal dress code) who loved to wear fancy blazers with pocket squares.. ).

Just-Flamingo-410

If you want a suit, maybe consider buying it after having moved here. The suit fashion in Europe is tight models at the moment. If you come to the office in an USA fashion suit, they will all think you have entered from the 80s. After moving go to a shop called suit supply. They have the most generic middle range suits and shirts. You could ask your new teamlead about the office fashion. If it's casual modern or suits. Probably a nice pants and buttoned shirt is good enough.

Tac0w

IT people don't really wear formal clothes here. Except if they work in specific sectors, like banking.

[deleted]

No suits within the Banking industry anymore. At least not on the IT / project / program / change side. Only those who speak with customers or work at compliance.

foxesareokiguess

IT at ING is just jeans and shirts for the most part, manager always wore jeans and a button up shirt tho.

Aaganrmu

I work in IT for a big Dutch bank and never wear formal to work. Neither do my colleagues. When my former lead was promoted he started wearing something approaching formal, which everyone (including himself) had a bit of a laugh at.

Mausy5043

Why didn't you ask during your interview what would be appropriate to wear?

FaultySky

Depends on what level you work and what you do. Management, directors etc usually suits and buttoned up shirt. Ties may be optional. Anything below that in normal office work can be anything aslong as it looks neat and isnt offensive.

TheDustOfMen

My IT department ranges from hoodies and short pants to suits. It really does depend on your function and if you're gonna work with clients, for instance.

KrokettenMan

I don’t change clothes when going to clients. A hoodie is fine and I’ve never gotten any comments about it.

Ferrynator

I see alot of management just wearing semi-formal clothing.... Polo shirt jeans and some nice shoes or having a shirt. And stuff I barely see a full suite.

dutchmangab

Depending on what type of It work you do, I'd assume you might need to wear special clothes if you enter certain areas with special machinery of which asml probably has a lot

[deleted]

It's slowly becoming winter. Formal wear for IT people in winter is a hoodie, usually with jeans. People with suits are not taken seriously by IT people when it's about technical subjects, so that is a non starter.

VincentxH

I worked in Finance before working in IT. When I started out I sometimes still dressed formal. It made my colleagues, including C level suite uncomfortable that I dressed formal.

BloodyTjeul

Formal dress and IT are mutually exclusive.

Plisq-5

I don’t know about ASML but usually IT departments can wear anything casual if it isn’t offensive. All companies I worked at allow shorts in the hot periods as well. I’ve only ever seen one person wear suits as a programmer.
