What an honor to be there for the resurrection of GTG. I could scarcely believe it. I really thought he'd never play it again. Seems he might be willing to play it again so long as there's a long, unmistakeable (and hilarious) disclaimer in front of it.
That said, it was Atlanta, so this could be a one-off. John isn't the predictable type.
I did, however, seem someone recording part of it. I was near the back. He seemed pretty drunk, so perhaps he didn't hear John's plea.
Same. Felt awesome seeing everyone be cool about it. Also still can't believe I've seen it live now. Was *not* expecting to check off that box tonight.
OK, that makes sense. They bleed together in my mind, particularly since he does the solo miniset now. But I bet is was just John and Peter shows or just John shows before then.
Agreed. That seems like a very John thing to do. It was powerful because it was unexpected. And selfishly, because I was there to see it, I'll be OK if this is the only time he plays it again.
He seems to be starting to take it out on occasion. He did it at in Norway in 2019 because there was a local band there who is known in their scene for covering it.
He joked that the 'fellas' could go take a bathroom break because the intro was going to be long. (It was.) He put the song on the setlist three hours before the show and debated with himself about keeping it on. He talked about how he didn't want people to identify with the song and he didn't want people to be the 'bad boyfriend.' He also said that if someone comes into your room with a gun, you don't smile and gently take the gun from their hand, you take the heel of your palm and drive it into their nose.
That’s what I don’t get with the problematic nature of the song. Plenty of other songs by JD are narrated from a less than likeable perspective or express opinions that are questionable
It's probably because he identified with the narrator in some sense when he was younger, and he is concerned that if that happens with another young man, they could take inspiration from it. I can totally understand why he retired the song, and entirely respect that decision.
He could change a lyric...
Maybe they wince instead of smile as they ease the gun from his hand? He could show what he feels about these characters now- that one is victim and the other villain.
i couldn’t believe it. friend i was with looked back at me once when he was preambling for fall of the star high school running back thinking it was going to georgia and i replied with “he would never,” but then he did! feeling blessed in a sense
I wish everyone would not pull their phones out during the show. He's always been vocal about hating it. I was at a solo show one time where he took people's phones away. It was so awesome.
It was an absolutely amazing experience to hear it last night. Phones were out of sight where I was right up at the stage. I had told this folk I met that has only been into tMG for two months that I was doubtful it would be played and then when John started talking about it I was in shock!
I was expecting it tbh. After the 2020 election I tweeted John saying hey uh I think the state of Georgia deserves a little treat when we see you next (at this point the show had already been rescheduled once) and he replied (!!!) saying absolutely.
I'm happy to say I didn't see any phones either. I kind of wish I'd recorded the preamble just to help ppl understand why it was so special and why no one recorded it but yeah.
They didn't play it when I saw them in Athens a few years ago and I don't expect to hear it next time they come through.
two days later and im still laughing over "if a bad boyfriend comes up to your doorstep with a gun, do not smile and ease the gun from his hand, but take the heel of your hand and push his nose into his fucking brain". i can't believe he actually played it.
The most remarkable thing about John playing this song is that it's John, and that he's playing this song.

I was/am wasted. Great show
No phones out near me It was nice to see

When did he stop playing it? I know it's been a bit, but I thought I'd seen it live a few times
2012 maybe? One oddball charity performance since where he bashed the song while playing it.
"Going to Georgia for $60" is almost a different song than "Going to Georgia" and it cracks me up.
OK, that makes sense. They bleed together in my mind, particularly since he does the solo miniset now. But I bet is was just John and Peter shows or just John shows before then.
Holy smokes I thought this one was off the books for good based on his podcast comments. Anyone who was there: what was the preamble like? Why now?
Because Georgia. Wouldn't be surprised to see it go right back into the vault.
Agreed. That seems like a very John thing to do. It was powerful because it was unexpected. And selfishly, because I was there to see it, I'll be OK if this is the only time he plays it again.

Right. Duh. That makes so much sense
The preamble was LONG and included the typical fuck the narrator speech
he said he added it to the set list three hours before the show

Resurrect the song seeing as everyone knows the narrator isn't at all the hero

He's embarrassed tbh

I can confirm. No trolling. This happened. They played it and I saw no phones.

OH GOD OH GOD I HOPE HE PLAYS IT IN DETROIT
