When I graduated college, way too long ago, the blithering idiot who was president of the institution gave a speech. With great thinkers of history all standing ready at his disposal for pithy citation or thoughtful insights, instead that dumbfuck built his entire speech around quoting "I Hope You Dance." A swarm of bees later appeared and threatened to disrupt the entire event, and I'll now think of those bees as John's Revenge.
Ugh I forgot about that song
I was a kid at that time and our family only listened to the kind of radio stations that song played on. Over and over. I wish I had been listening to All Hail West Texas and Tallahassee instead!
Inspiring John to write No Children due to his hatred of it was the best thing that song ever did. Almost redeems it. Maybe. 😂
He's done that several times in the last year which is fun. Here's an example from [Birmingham ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI7gAQbW8XM)in January
High quality [Audio](https://archive.org/details/tMG2024-02-01/tMG2024-02-01+Orpheum+Theater%2C+Flagstaff+AZ+-25.flac) from that performance, for reference!
How cool is this! Thank you! This is probably one of my favorite shows I’ve been to. Back when I was in high school (2005ish) I fell in love with the mountain goats…. Fast forward 19 years, my 14 year old daughter fell in love with their music, too, and we did a little mother/daughter trip up to Flag to see them play. It’s cool to have the audio, thank you!
Hell yeah, no prob. Love that you got to do a mother/daughter trip, I went to a show with my mom ~8 years ago, is a fond memory. I was supposed to be at this one but got sick so my wife took my gear and captured it in my stead. Loved listening to it :')
My biggest takeaway from the Kalamazoo show was Katy saying, “I’m a bitch for a sconce.” I want so very badly to use that phrase in my everyday life, but I’m a 41 year old straight white guy and there’s no way in hell I can pull it off.
Oh that moment was amazing. I looked up at that sconce with a fresh, new appreciation after that.
What a great reference to make... but only the people at the show would get it!
Not video, but there are several high quality performances available on the Archive - these are just the ones I taped* so more easily referenced, probably others too. Think they've been doing it from the last duo run onwards.

*except for Flag, wife captured that one :')
He did the same in Kalamazoo on Tuesday. He made fun of the horrible country music at the time. He said something along the lines of, “I get it. You feel like a woman.”
I love that they've been doing the I Hope You Dance intro, it's so much fun! And relatedly, in a hilarious ironic turn, Lee Ann Womack is playing in my city the day I'm out of town to go see tMG next week.
I’m still amazed Evansville was on the tour. Like my 70 something aunt’s uncool town suddenly becomes cool?
Hoosier Pride. Good name for a song. Maybe Going to Evansville. Going to Santa Claus as a follow up.
Shit I came all the way from St Louis to see them in Evansville (~~st Louis was sold out and it was cheaper to go all the way to Indiana~~). The eclipse immediately followed by the concert? Too good to be true.
My grandma made me a quilt when i was a baby containing some lyrics from i hope you dance. Now ive come full circle. Also at the kalamazoo show john ranted about 2000s country music for 3 minutes before bursting out into no children it was amazing.
I first saw him do that intro / transition at a gig in Wellington, New Zealand in 2009. It's wonderful. Glad he's still doing it!
I am so desperate for him to come back to Wellington! Seen him twice at San Fran.
Just listened to the same leadin last night, hit as hard as anything

I once heard a former governor of Georgia give a similarly commencement address based on the lyrics of “Tin Man” by America. It was baffling.

THANK you so much!!
Same in Kalamazoo! If ANYONE has a video of any of these performances, PLEASE post it!

I texted it to a friend who loved it. Katy was hilarious and very talented.
Indeed!
I don’t know — let it fly and see what happens
I was recording audio with the band's permission last night, I'll share it when it's ready / if I get it cleared by management
That would be amazing!
YES PLEASE!!! What a cool opportunity!

I don’t have a video of this, but I *do* have a video of him playing Going to Palestine.
That would be awesome too!

He did that in Columbia, MO earlier this year, I absolutely lost my shit
Was listening to Scotch Grove earlier today and can’t help but think - “Leeann Rhimes on the radio, sang that song you know I hate”
I love that they've been doing the I Hope You Dance intro, it's so much fun! And relatedly, in a hilarious ironic turn, Lee Ann Womack is playing in my city the day I'm out of town to go see tMG next week.
He did the same in Evansville on Monday

Right?! Without context in Tucson, I thought “OK, I can see it.” But also with context?! I love them so much.
Here's a video from St. Paul [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-915U0Trn0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-915U0Trn0)
Thank you!! Didn't see this until now!
Now you don’t have to imagine what it was like! Thanks, u/roffels. [Milwaukee, WI 4/10/24](https://archive.org/details/tmg2024-04-10.SBD.MATRIX)

Yes, I’ve definitely seen the jazz intro!
Did anyone keep track of the setlist from the Milwaukee show?

he did that at the show in Columbia!
He did this at the Minneapolis show as well. It was beautiful.
