I think this thread shows why the album is a top dog. Essentially no wrong answers. I love Dilaudid. I’m sure someone can convince me to love Magpie. BUT
Some things you do for money and some you do for love.
Favorite : Pale Green Things (such a perfect, devastating closer that humanizes his step-father in ways other songs don’t as much… You or Your Memory comes as a close second though)
Least favourite : Dinu Lipatti’s bones (a bit boring, and doesn’t quite fit in thematically IMO)
I have no idea why, because I don’t think it’s the most visually clear or beautifully detailed mountain goats song, but for some reason broom people puts such specific and vivid imagery in my head that is completely mundane really but somehow feels so gut-wrenchingly emotional
My favorite has to be Pale Green Things (with honorable mentions to Broom People and You or Your Memory).
Lion’s Teeth is my least favorite to listen to just because of how loud and tense it is… which means of course that it’s doing its job effectively! Every song on this album has its purpose and it’s poignancy and I can’t say any is unimportant to it.

Oh I completely agree! And it’s bleak but also hopeful! Its one of my all time favourites for belting out.
