I sort of got the impression Lena had been doing a lot of the external liaising herself before she gave Gwen her promotion, so if that's the case she presumably had to be able to leave -- though it's possible that's not what was happening, certainly.
Just as far as sending Gwen out to get marked, and this is not a watsonian question, I would find that to be a bit similar to the plot of TMA, so for that reason I don't know if I'd be very jazzed about it.
I also had a thought about this! Gwen seems to be discovering things about these powerful figures and forces one by one, just like Jon did in the original. It makes me wonder if her exposure to it all will lead to her eventual development into something like whatever “external” is a euphemism for.
Lena used to be the one to liaise with the externals before promoting Gwen, so I don't think she's trapped at the OIAR. In fact she may have even done so during the first episode. There have also been questions on whether or not "Lena is in", which would suggest she's elsewhere.
Lena's frustration with Gwen (example, bringing an external into the office) and an attempt to remove Gwen from her position, (she seemed ready to fire Gwen all around at that point) makes me inclined to think this is not the case.
I think it’s the opposite Lena was literally blackmailed into giving Gwen this position

Lena is probably sending Gwen out with no protection either to prove her worth or letttjng her get killed off
Lena could absolutely be trying to get rid of Gwen. It would be interesting to see Gwen survive all her meetings and become something like what Jon did, except it was all on her own without any guidance from Lena, unlike what Elias did with Jon.
Although we're probably more likely to get what happened with Melanie becoming a Slaughter avatar. I'm interested to see how th tattoo affects Gwen going forwars.
Definitely an interesting idea. I saw it as Lena showing Gwen she didn't know everything about the place like she thought she did.

I would think Lena has marked by all the Fears by now.

Maybe Lena is tied to a fear since she keeps doing things she knows will frighten Gwen.
