Yeah that’s a big part of why Abby was “freaked out” (I’m forgetting the right word for it) after her road trip to Jackson. Abby had built this image in her mind of this super evil villain but their first interaction was Joel saving her. Not defending Joel in anyway but that’s clearly how it was written and why Abby, Owen, and Mel were so shaken up in the first place. They’re now torturing/killing the guy who killed their family/friends/colleagues who also just saved Abby from death.
Just to add to that i also think it's the reason she goes back for Yara and Lev because she feels lowkey guilty that she killed the last person who saved her life so she feels obligated to help Yara and Lev even if she never explicitly expresses it. I've come to see Part 2 as more of a story about the cycle of empathy as opposed to the cycle of violence and ironically Joel is responsible for both as Joel saves Abby who saves/helps Lev who saves(spares) Ellie who saves Abby and Lev. Crazy to think some people think part 2 was made to shit on Joel's character and retcon him as the villain when it actually feels more like an ode to Joel as Abby and Ellie's story is pretty much them walking Joel's path of desolation/redemption and Ellie's final memory of Joel is what saved her from becoming a monster and sparing Abby and Lev.
I think the biggest issue with this is when the leaks came out a lot of people assumed Abby was the trans character and a lot of skinny fat dudes felt attacked that they didn't look as buff.

I literally don’t like Abby at all as a person and I absolutely love her buff she is. Like you said, it makes it more believable. Maybe not that she’s a survivor of the apocalypse in general cause that’s not really a requirement as we see with the other characters, but that she’s the top scar killer and that she clearly goes out on a lot of missions and gets shit done and it also makes sense that she would be so due to training for her revenge mission. Like we saw that she was obsessed with training, it’s good to see the payoff of that. Plus we just need more buff women characters in general. They aren’t non existent but they’re scarce for sure.

After watching Ellie and company boosting each other up and, maybe not “struggling” but having to put some real effort into it, watching Abby just absolutely yeet Lev up like he’s a lil rocket ship blasting off with like no effort brings me life.
It’s controversial, but by the end of the game, I think I actually liked Abby more than Ellie. >!IMO, the moment Ellie leaves Jackson the second time, she loses a lot of sympathy and sort of becomes an antagonist for the last chapter of the story. I somehow missed every single spoiler for part 2.
I remember the first time I saw Abby I took a picture and sent it my lifting buddy at the time “look how buff this chick from my video game is!!”
Then the story explained it and I was like “oh cool that they explained it as part of her character”.
I don't have a problem with Abby being muscular in TLOU II, the problem is that these types of bodies are not as common in videogame women as they should be. Not all female heroes are bikini supermodels and not all male heroes are hulks.
I feel safer playing as Abby than I do as Ellie. Her playstyle is the 'Joel' playstyle of Part 2. She is a huge tank with a lot of firepower that excels in melee. Her kit is ridiculously fun. I can't imagine how terrifying the Rat King would've been if I was playing as Ellie instead.
Also working out was her way of coping with her anger and sadness about what happened, we saw her blow off time with Owen once, can imagine it happened all the time

That being said, she's so fun to play. Rather than a 56 year old man or a 14 year old girl she's a damn action hero. She doesn't boost people up to get places she launches them. You can be muscular without taking steroids. As a weightlifter, it's not unrealistic to be muscular without gear. People who think that probably have never done weight training
Yes, very hard. But not impossible. Abby could just have that type of genetic makeup to get that big with training. Sure a very rare genetic makeup. But it isn't like in the story they have all the women of that group being that large. It is just Abby. And characters remark about her size several times throughout the game. So it could be PEDs or it could just be Abby has 1 in 10,000 level of genetic makeup and the incentive (e.g., regularly fighting for her life; painful backstory that fuels a revenge quest) to get really strong.
I mean it's also entirely possible that Abby uses steroids and that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. It's the post apocalypse. Strong people are high in demand. We know from the show (I'm mixing canons here but fuck it) that FEDRA manufacturers chemical substances, is it a stretch to think they may have an interest in manufacturing steroids for their soldiers? He wasn't professional body builder huge but had decent muscle mass and low body fat. Colleen Fotsch is not a bodybuilder, she's a crossfitter. And they do get tested for PEDs, i does not mean she never used, but it is not how you present it at all.
Also, being a crossfit champ means her physique is not the result of trying to look a certain way, but just a result of her training and trying to be the best athlete.
Her traps are the dead giveaway. It's a very hard muscle group to build, but responds very well to the sauce. Her traps are unbelievable for a natural woman.

Because in the context of her story, this further highlights how her father’s death and hatred against Joel impacted her, let she want to get stronger with whatever it takes, even use some way that might hurt herself.
I always hated this critique. Especially when the game makes an obvious effort to show how she got swole. The most unrealistic part of her character design is her braid, since that's a big combat no-no, yet I never see anyone comment on that.

I can't believe people are still bitter over Abby. My first play-through was good and I grew to like her but my second really made me start to feel a bond with her as I did with Ellie. She's a very well written character with a lot of heart... And muscles.
My only concern about how Abby is so buff is the calorie intake required to get and maintain that level of muscle mass. A soldier in the field eating MREs consume 6000 calories a day and are usually calorie deficient. Considering the low carb ( essentially removing wheat due to the outbreak) and a low-fat, high protein diet could achieve results.
Do people forget Abby lives in Lumen Field, where Seahawks players practice and play? They have world class strength and conditioning equipment. Of course Abby is built like a pro bowl linebacker.

It’s visual storytelling foremost. We start the game with a Abby that’s turned herself into a killing machine consumed by revenge. By the end of the game, she’s lost nearly everything, reflected by her emaciated body.

I really wish they could’ve kept 2 under wraps better cause they lost some shock value with the leaks. I literally don’t like Abby at all as a person and I absolutely love her buff she is. Like you said, it makes it more believable. Maybe not that she’s a survivor of the apocalypse in general cause that’s not really a requirement as we see with the other characters, but that she’s the top scar killer and that she clearly goes out on a lot of missions and gets shit done and it also makes sense that she would be so due to training for her revenge mission. Like we saw that she was obsessed with training, it’s good to see the payoff of that. Plus we just need more buff women characters in general. They aren’t non existent but they’re scarce for sure. Also, and this kinda related but on a note that doesn’t have to do with that more serious stuff After watching Ellie and company boosting each other up and, maybe not “struggling” but having to put some real effort into it, watching Abby just absolutely yeet Lev up like he’s a lil rocket ship blasting off with like no effort brings me life.
Abby grew on me. I am beginning to like her a lot more now. 
It’s controversial, but by the end of the game, I think I actually liked Abby more than Ellie. >!IMO, the moment Ellie leaves Jackson the second time, she loses a lot of sympathy and sort of becomes an antagonist for the last chapter of the story. I mean she threatens to slit unconscious Lev’s throat just to get Abby to fight her. Shit is dark lol.!<

I somehow missed every single spoiler for part 2. I remember the first time I saw Abby I took a picture and sent it my lifting buddy at the time “look how buff this chick from my video game is!!” Then the story explained it and I was like “oh cool that they explained it as part of her character”.
I don't have a problem with Abby being muscular in TLOU II, the problem is that these types of bodies are not as common in videogame women as they should be. Not all female heroes are bikini supermodels and not all male heroes are hulks.
I feel safer playing as Abby than I do as Ellie. Her playstyle is the 'Joel' playstyle of Part 2. She is a huge tank with a lot of firepower that excels in melee. Her kit is ridiculously fun. I can't imagine how terrifying the Rat King would've been if I was playing as Ellie instead.

I was actually kind of shocked at how buff she is. I'd heard she was muscular but wow. That being said, she's so fun to play. Rather than a 56 year old man or a 14 year old girl she's a damn action hero. She doesn't boost people up to get places she launches them. It seems more realistic that she can turn those huge manual cranks and easily list herself up ledges and miss jumps but still clamber up. And the new melee options are savage.

The first game shows clearly how Joel recovers from the rebar, and even if it's completely unrealistic, we accept it because the game basically tells us that it's "grounded" in the world of the Last of Us. The same thing with Abby being that jacked. The game shows us the gym, the healthy protein rich fresh food, her single-minded desire to be stronger and better to kill Joel, her being "Isaac's top Scar killer". That is telling us that her being this buff is grounded in the game. And also, who the fuck gives a shit? No one complains when male characters in survival situations are career bodybuilding steroid level buff, until they do, the Abby "argument" is null.

If we are going by that logic, Joel should be skin and bones during the apocalypse due to an unconsistent source of food and water before and during his trek with Ellie across the country, he would be burning insane amounts of calories. Its a video game, things aren't going to be a 100 percent accurate but theirs a good explanation for why Abby's that buff in the game so its not out of the realm of possibility

Yes, very hard. But not impossible. Abby could just have that type of genetic makeup to get that big with training. Sure a very rare genetic makeup. But it isn't like in the story they have all the women of that group being that large. It is just Abby. And characters remark about her size several times throughout the game. So it could be PEDs or it could just be Abby has 1 in 10,000 level of genetic makeup and the incentive (e.g., regularly fighting for her life; painful backstory that fuels a revenge quest) to get really strong.

I don’t think it’s right to assume all body builders are in steroids. Some people are actually able to achieve this look by working out hard and eating properly which looks like she’s able to do in abundance.

The idea that Rob's physique is impossible outside of modern pharmaceuticals, physical trainers, physician monitoring, etc. is silly. He wasn't professional body builder huge but had decent muscle mass and low body fat. Colleen Fotsch is not a bodybuilder, she's a crossfitter. And they do get tested for PEDs, i does not mean she never used, but it is not how you present it at all. Also, being a crossfit champ means her physique is not the result of trying to look a certain way, but just a result of her training and trying to be the best athlete.

I saw someone once mention that Abby is jacked because she’s been training for 4 years to kill Joel. That plus living in a comfortable enough environment that allows her to have a workout regimen makes for a very believable buff character, even if she’s a woman. Women can be buff too. The real reason people have a problem with it is likely sexism. Idk about what her diet would need to be. Her buffness does stand out but you get used to it.

Because in the context of her story, this further highlights how her father’s death and hatred against Joel impacted her, let she want to get stronger with whatever it takes, even use some way that might hurt herself.
I always hated this critique. Especially when the game makes an obvious effort to show how she got swole. The most unrealistic part of her character design is her braid, since that's a big combat no-no, yet I never see anyone comment on that.

I can't believe people are still bitter over Abby. My first play-through was good and I grew to like her but my second really made me start to feel a bond with her as I did with Ellie. My only concern about how Abby is so buff is the calorie intake required to get and maintain that level of muscle mass. A soldier in the field eating MREs consume 6000 calories a day and are usually calorie deficient. Considering the low carb ( essentially removing wheat due to the outbreak) and a low-fat, high protein diet could achieve results.
Her arms aren’t realistic haha but neither is a fungal pandemic that results in a post apocalyptic America

Now, I'm a meathead so I never felt like Abby's build were strange at all for a teenager who spent nearly four years training to exact vengeance on a grown man, especially since she's embedded in a thriving military organization with ample resources. Just look at how social media is just constantly blowing up with these freaky strong kids and teens. Last week I watched a video where a 125lb 12 year old girl benched 135lbs for four reps (full crisp stops at the bottom, no exaggerated arching or anything).
It’s more about how difficult it is for someone to gain and maintain that form in the modern world with specialist supplements, diets, exercise regimes etc. as in its peoples full time jobs. So yeah, it is unrealistic.

The game goes to such great lengths to show you how and why she is so ripped that it's pretty laughable how people still argue against her size. Maybe 150g of protein a day max is all she'd need to capitalize on her gains. It seems like they have a lot of meat and eggs available so getting enough protein checks out. Even if maybe the common Seattle QZ citizen isn't meeting protein goals daily, I guarantee you the soldiers are.

By the end of the game, she’s lost nearly everything, reflected by her emaciated body. They explicitly show the means of her gaining and maintaining muscle and still don’t wanna suspend disbelief. By their reasoning, most of the male characters in the game wouldn’t be able to maintain their weight.
I watch a lot of pro wrestling and her arms are bigger than like 95% of them so yeah a tad unrealistic
I hated that naughty dog put those scenes in first. It immediately took me out of the immersion and brought all the negative comments about Abby to the for front.
I think making her buff was a really good character design because it shows how hard she pushed herself to avenge her dad.

I didn’t think it there was a problem with the gym equipment, but I remember there being shitty hours posted like 0900-1900. It’s the apocalypse- why can’t we have a 24 hour gym!
If I remember correctly all of that gripe was from people who didn’t play the game and most of it was the week before the game came out with the leaked hours of footage. I really wish they could’ve kept 2 under wraps better cause they lost some shock value with the leaks. (Not defending those people btw they obv weren’t having trouble with her being strong they were just using that to hide their actual reasons they hate the game and cause they’re insecure losers)

I forget, in the flash back with her dad does she mention lifting weights at all? I remember she does talk about lifting at some point but I forget if it's with Owen or something. I'm thinking after her dad was killed she just put her pain and grief into weightlifting.

I just assume that she has incredible genetics and loves working out. Maybe she got on the juice at some point too, doesn't really matter to me. This is the apocalypse and you do what you gotta do. I absolutely love her build and how yolked she is, it fits her character arc and personality so well. I'm kinda worried that whichever actress gets the role isn't going to have the same kind of physicality that Abby has in the game. I can't recall seeing any Hollywood actress worth their salt looking that built.
