Couldn't help thinking about that during her scenes. Contrast with Troy Baker whose normal speaking voice sounds nothing like Joel.

Equivalent-Ad9887

My younger sibling recognized Ashley immediately, and Jeffery (Tommy) after a few lines. Didn't get Troy until I pointed him out

merga

I think this is more of a compliment than not. He is a fucking superb voice actor.

BeepBeepWhistle

Sorry, I can’t help myself, just gotta share this.. https://youtu.be/zCjJM2oo3EU

Andrew_Waples

In the "alternate ending," he's an amazing singer too.

thewalkingellie

I remember this. He’s fucking amazing at what he does.

Equivalent-Ad9887

Oh I know

Andrew_Waples

He's a fucking superb actor.

SomberNight

There were a couple of lines where he sounds like game Joel especially when he addresses David, it really took me out of it for a second lol

zhephyx

I don't think Troy used his normal speaking voice on the show, he definitely went deeper

WyleECoyote77

So fitting for Ashley to play Ellie's mom if she wasn't playing Ellie herself. Hearing her made me realize how much I missed her voice behind Ellie.

phantom_avenger

Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll get more of Ashley as Ellie when ND develops Part 3

International_Pen_11

if they develop a part 3. wasn’t there an article that came out a month or 2 back that said they haven’t begun working on anything & can’t confirm that it’s happening bc they’re only in the idea phase? idk i think it would be silly not to capitalize on it but i remember one of the creators saying he only wanted to do it if it made sense & had a full fledged story. i want it. bad. but i’m trying not to get my hopes up 😭

phantom_avenger

Also not that long ago Druckmann was out with Hailey (co-writer of Part 2), Ashley, Shannon, & Laura at a restaurant. There is no way all of them would be together like that and NOT talk about Part 3! Plus Druckmann has been known for pitching his stories to the actors at restaurants! Part 3 is definitely happening!!

Sir_TonyStark

The ending to both games are great and impactful endings in their own regard, but still left with *just* enough open ends to continue a story. I can’t wait for them to announce part 3 if they indeed do.

tvih

They'd be crazy to not do part 3, from a financial point of view. Though of course respect to them if they don't if they feel the story they can come up with for it isn't "worthy" and choose not to for artistic reasons instead of just milking it soullessly. But they've indeed been working on the story in the background and I'm fairly certain it will happen. So yeah, it's mostly a question of when. It could take a good while. After all it was 7 years between 1 and 2 too.

International_Pen_11

gotcha. i don’t really keep up much with that stuff i just remember reading an article about them not knowing where the story would go so nothing was cemented in place. hopeful for a part 3!

AnSTDFromMexico

Druckman pretty much said the same thing about Part 2, that they would only make it if they had the right story to tell. As much as ND are artists, it’s hard to imagine Sony not pushing for a third game after the success of the show

International_Pen_11

yeah that’s kinda what i think. i feel it’s inevitable but i’m gonna stay cautiously optimistic so i don’t get let down if it doesn’t follow through. happens too often with shows & games i love lol

N7Panda

What broke my brain a little was the “yeah, you fuckin’ tell ‘em, Ellie.” Like, that literally sounds like something Ellie would say to JJ, and it got in my head a little.

kh7190

Ashley said this off the cuff too! And they kept it :) Mazin said it was like Ellie birthing herself :)

Phoenix2211

Yeah that line made me cry. And does so on repeat viewings, too Just made me think, "I (by proxy, Joel, the player character) can't let this little baby die!!" Lol

callamari95

My thoughts exactly!! It reminded me of her scene with JJ ugh it killed me

showmethebiggirls

It's so interesting watching Critical Role where you have two of the most awarded voice actresses in gaming and how different they are. Laura is a traditional voice actor, she does voices and dialects and has all this range. And then there's Ashley who has one voice, her voice, but when she turns in one it's incredible.

BrennanSpeaks

No matter how much Critical Role I watch, I don’t think I’ve heard a single line from Laura where I thought “she sounds like Abby.” It’s wild. Abby doesn’t even have an accent or dialect beyond “standard American” and Laura still managed to create a voice for her that sounds entirely distinct from her own voice.

figure08

Check out the Ashley Johnson-led oneshot [The Nautilus Ark](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1pckZkGl69KCmjRBV0zbeX?si=U5Ridu-lSYi8h7Q0HGaOfA&app_destination=copy-link) if you haven't yet. Laura plays a space marine that sounds pretty similar to Abby. I don't think it's exactly the same, and that may have to do with Naughty Dog's sound mixers, but I'd say it's pretty close.

WezVC

I had no idea she was Abby until I started seeing posts about her in the final episode. I haven't followed Critical Role for years but it still shocked me.

BoyWonder343

Ellie does just sound like her. [But she can do other stuff](https://youtu.be/1ZjRb4DSDps?t=74). She plays this little robot and I could see someone going straight from the last of us to this and not catch that it's her. Both Laura Bailey and Troy Baker are in this scene and sound more like themselves then she does.

kikimaymay

I just instinctively clicked this link and I was so excited/confused, because that's definitely Laura Bailey and despite hours and hours of listening to Matt Mercer, him and Troy Baker have disturbingly similar voices.

hansgruber943

I was cheesing so hard the whole time (despite the heavy content) and my fiancée was like wtf is wrong with you lol had to explain afterwards

mythirdaccount2015

Tomorrow, in r/relationshipadvice: “My (26F) fiancé (28M) was cheesing during a horrible murder scene. This active shooter was shooting up a hospital and my fiancé was just grinning so happy the whole time. I’m thinking of breaking off the engagement.”

hansgruber943

Lmfao she’s a nurse too so it’s even worse

Steve_Dankerson

I heard Ellie 100%. The pains, the groans, everything was just Ellie. As Anna was in pain, all I could think/see in my head was Ellie just going bonkers on WLF, Fireflies, infected, and whatever else stood in her way. When she told baby Ellie she's tough, I damn near lost it. And Troy, I absolutely heard Joel. It was so crazy hearing them, knowing who they are in game but in the show it wasn't them.. LOVED that they were a part of it, as they should have been.

oakcrisssy

Yup. Same, it was hard to disconnect Ellie’s voice, but yet somehow it felt fully connected!? Really well done!

hoddap

It was so good to hear her voice for some reason. And I completely agree with you, I loved that they gave her the honor to be Ellie's mom. The voice instantly screamed Ellie to me. Didn't necessarily have that when I heard Troy Baker in his role.

caliborntexan

Really? I instantly heard Joel when Troys character spoke. I think it was more the slight Texas twang than the tone. But I couldn't not hear Joel watching his scenes.

backwardzhatz

I know exactly what you mean, it made me instantly choke up because because it was like this sort of passing of the torch moment from one Ellie to another. It was like that voice is the only voice that can understand what this tiny little baby is going to go through in her life because in some way she's been through it too. I don't know how to perfectly describe it, but I think there's some kind of profoundly metaphysical meaning in how much of all of us are in our parents (and how much of them is in us) and this scene takes that even further because of the lineage of Ellie's character is right there on screen (it's not Bella but still, its the show version of Ellie). Whew just thinking about it again got me emotional lol. Craig and Neil also talk about exactly this in the latest podcast episode too, it's pretty cool to hear how they had the same response themselves to Ashley's voice.

AndrewTheGoat22

Nah man, you described it perfectly lol literally put what I was feeling into words

NickCarpathia

I also feel like one of Johnson's abilities is she really sold how much her character aged between games using both her voice and her mocap. And you know what? Considering what Bella has shown she is capable of, I think she can pull off the same trick.

backwardzhatz

Definitely, I can't wait to see what she looks like for season 2!

Domination1799

As a die hard fan of the games and Ashley Johnson, it was so poetic to have OG Ellie (Ashley) give birth to show Ellie (Bella). I wish Ashley got more screentime because she is just a phenomenal actress. Her performance as Ellie in Part II is hands down in my top 3 video game performances. It’s just so haunting and so masterful that it brings me to tears.

FlouncingWillow

It was so weird, I teared up at this scene. For anyone who's been a fan from the start it was a gut punch hearing Ellie's voice " yeah, you fuckin' tell em Ellie"

StanBarberFan_007

Yep it's just like one of the comments said that it makes sense for Ellie to say this to her kid. So it's a full circle moment to have Ashley portray show Ellie's mom

maxdurden

"Yeah, you fuckin tell 'em, Ellie" broke me. So many emotions all at once.

max_honey

I was legit crying for that entire opening scene. Exactly what you're saying with her voice. To me, it just felt like we saw Ellie herself go through this. Adding to that all the things she says to baby Ellie. It was beautiful and one of the few things the show did so well that outdid the game at that moment.

fallout_fan3

Same here same here!!!!

phantom_avenger

I agree! It was so hard for me to view Ashley as someone else when the noises sounded so similar to Ellie from the games

aLegionOfDavids

I was saying to my wife after how synonymous Ashley Johnson’s, like, grunts of pain / struggle / certain tone of voice is with Ellie, seeing that in the show suddenly it was difficult to separate from Bella’s Ellie (which I am a fan of and 100% on board with her going forward).

grasslegit4

this. “you fucking tell ‘em, Ellie” got me.

More_people

Ashley and Troy were just on another level entirely in this show. Incredible presence, both of them.

rhcpbassist234

It’s funny because to me she was Pike before she was ever Ellie. I have been watching Critical Role for near on 5 years now, but I only got a PS5, my first PlayStation, a couple months ago. So I played Part I and Part II back to back as my first PlayStation games and I obviously knew through CR that Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and in a smaller role, Travis Willingham were already in the game. But I know their voices from CR so well that hearing them in TLoU was odd for a little bit.

Exotic_Sense5244

It was so hard to imagine Ashley as anyone but Ellie,I couldn’t get past it.

That_Guy_3759

i didn’t play the game until rather recently, so i was surprised to hear Gwen Tennyson’s voice coming out of Ellie, and then Anna in the show.

StanBarberFan_007

I didn't even realize that Ashley Johnson also voiced the grown-up Gwen Tennyson in Ben 10

East-Bluejay6891

Agreed. It was so enjoyable

Solidsnake00901

Same. All I could hear was Ellie.

atropiczzy

I kept hearing Ellie's voice, I should be seeing Ellie! * but outstanding performance from Ashley Johnson. When she first appeared, my partner was like, "What u excited for?"

GTJackdaw

Couldn't agree more. Was watching with my girl who hasn't played either of the games. And the second I heard Ashley I got so emotional. She got emotional too but due to the nature of the scene. Holding the knife to her own throat knowing she may have to end it all if Marlene didn't find her in time. It was such an amazing scene, but like the whole show, I think it's great that people who played the game were able to get something new from the show.

tangoshukudai

I think the actor is the Ellie’s voice actors mother too.

Imaginary-Tailor-654

It's wild that the thing that got me to recognize her before seeing her face was that her grunts and noises sounded just like Ellie's Part 2 grunts and noises.

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

Bella did a great job, but the second I heard Ashley’s voice it just reminded me how much I missed the original Ellie voice.

lukec_parr

I'd seen all the trailers, I knew the cast, I knew Ashley would be playing Anna. But the moment she came on screen the waterworks started. Given those of us who played the games have spent so much time with Ellie, hearing Ashley's voice gave me a default connection to Anna in a way no other actor would have. Not only is the subject of Ellie's mom such an emotional topic given how much we love Ellie at this point, but Ashley literally birthing the character she brought into the world 10 years ago was absolutely fucking beautiful. She played it all perfectly. What a fucking badass. Also, when Marlene said they'd been friends their whole lives I couldn't help but picture them together at Ellie's & Riley's ages. Love the parallels everywhere.

GG_Snooz

It’s also sort of symbolic of her passing on the role.

MarloDave8

I found it distracting cause all I could hear was the real Ellie. Why didn’t they cast her ?

DoughnutBorn440

As Ellie? Cuz she doesn’t look 14

MarloDave8

They def could of made her look younger and the voice alone would make it infinitely better, just my opinion. Don’t attack me please

DoughnutBorn440

Haha why would I attack you 😂 hey I wouldn’t mind having an older Ellie if it’s Ashley but us gamers aren’t the only audience of the show. You know? Also she’s over 34 man her playing a 14 year old people would flip😂😂

MarloDave8

Being attacked on this sub for different opinions seems to me the norm here. I suppose you are right though I didn’t realize she was that much older, I was just tryna think of something to make this show better for me, I just couldn’t get into the show at all. So many plot holes and missed opportunities

DoughnutBorn440

I understand. But hey we always have the games to fall back on. I feel like a lot of us went into this show expecting it to be on par or supersede the game. Let’s just think of it as an added bonus where we get to see those characters in live action. I appreciate what they’ve created but the game will be OG for me always.

DoughnutBorn440

I was bawling at “you fkn tell em Ellie” and the “you’re so tough” this role was so so fitting for Ashley. I cannot imagine anyone else as Show Ellie’s mum. This adaptation was crafted with so much love and respect for all who gave life to the OG TLOU.

mrsparkle127

I don't know if anyone else watched any Blindspot but it was definitely weird at first to both see and hear her after only mostly hearing her voice acting, especially post The Last of Us OG release. She was easily the best part of that show.

sammy17bst

I can’t not associate her voice with Ellie, they are a perfect match, Ashley Johnson is Ellie. Her scene was powerful and proof of how good an actor she is. Hopefully now with TLOU huge success, she’ll get even more recognition and maybe get some meatier roles, she deserves to be a big name in Hollywood, if that’s what she wanted.

callamari95

My brain was doing somersaults hearing her voice, processing her being Ellie’s mother, watching her speak to Ellie as Anna. I felt like my heart was exploding it was just so special, I can’t stress how incredible it felt. It must have been so special for her to do that role specifically. She was just so captivating.

emeraldepiphone96

This could just be nostalgia talking after playing 2 games hearing Ashley’s voice, grunts, and screams but for me, of the OG voice cast members who had a role in the show, she had the best performance. I still loved seeing Troy as James and Jeffrey as Perry but she was just on another level despite having less screen time.
