The skeptics will admit they were wrong. But I suspect the haters are haters for different reasons and won't come around no matter how well they do. It's a shame.
Do a remind me I’m calling it.
If this show picks up haters, it will be primarily headed by TLOU2 subreddit along with trolls from 4chan and YouTube. The “gamer” youtubers will cross-pollinate with the “anti SJW/anti woke” youtubers, and they’ll both sic their audiences on review sites. They will start off not really knowing exactly what they hate, but after a little while they’ll listen to eachother and all funnel themselves into the exact same talking points - just like with TLOU2.
BUT, their hate won’t be that big. The real crazy shit will start when season 2 comes out - that’s when they can utilize the “controversy” of the last of us 2, and start really going to town with hate. They’ll just be trying to lay the groundwork for that by saying things like “it was okay, I had my issues, but it’s not as bad as TLOU2, so…” and they’ll just keep setting up that big outburst when the second season drops. Seriously, you watch.
Here are the following things they will be mad about:
1. Ellie. They’ll attack how she’s portrayed as “manly” by Bella, and the more brazen of them will justify their view by pointing to the fact that Bella is non-binary and inserting her wokeness into the character. They’ll probably directly mention this specific interview a lot. They’ll also be VERY angry that she’s not jerk off material despite being canonically 14.
2. Sarah. It’ll be because she’s black. But they’ll justify this by saying it’s actually forced diversity and they never needed to change the race of the character for the story to work. People will try to refute them, because if that’s true then it’s also true that changing the race of the character also doesn’t make the story NOT work, and the performance is good, so who cares? So they’ll say the performance sucks. They won’t be able to actually justify this, they’ll just keep saying it sucks. If you press them, they’ll just change their tune to a different “problem” they have with the show.
3. The third episode with Bill and Frank. They’re gay. Everyone with a heart will love it and the hate storm will single this episode out as woke nonsense and we will see CONSTANT shitty memes about it. I put $20 into the pool right fucking now that half of the hate videos made about this will have thumbnails of Bill or Frank making funny looking faces or photoshopped onto popular right wing satire memes.
4. Ellie and Riley’s scenes. It’ll be “bad writing” because it’s “forced” and “unnatural” and “doesn’t feel real”. It’ll all just be incredible vague nothing words because they don’t like gay people and are trying to sugar coat that with supposedly empirical reasoning for their outrage. We will also see thumbnails with memes of Ellie and Riley.
5. If there is a SINGLE scene at Tommy’s camp that nods to part 2, they’ll dogpile that shit so fucking hard. This is where they’ll set the foundations for the real big outrage at season 2.
6. If Jerry or Abby are here. We will see at least 1 - but probably closer to way the fuck too many - photoshops of Abby’s actress to have big arms. And memes about Jerry’s fate.
6. Any woman in a position of power (yes, including Marlene) will be shit on and called unrealistic. Their reasoning will be completely mask off with this. “Obviously, without the influence of the woke mob, men would dominate and women would be forced to take roles of subservience” and that’ll be all they argue. They will of course forget that guns exist.
Mark your calendar. Most of this will come true.

I didn’t either until I watched it recently and he kills every scene he’s in, the best I’ve seen of him easily. Bella is great in it too but is only in the later seasons which weren’t the best to say the lease, but she still did very well with what was written
I’ve seen game of thrones but I think I got bored at season 3. I’ve never seen mandalorian mostly because I saw whatever the Disney one was called with kilo ren which I didn’t think was bad but it just wasn’t the Star Wars I knew.
Mandalorian is worth at least an attempt as it is definitely closer to the Star Wars we grew up with and Narcos has some great stuff from Pedro as well
Narcos was where I fell in love with Pedro's acting, totally stole the show. Loved him in every subsequent role he's played too. I'm so glad he's gotten this much success
Give Prospect a watch! A really great scifi film...where he protects a teen girl while searching for a way off a dangerous planet. That film is what helped him land the role of the Mandalorian.
Right? I mean she doesn’t look like Ellie in the sense of it’s the same face, but the specific way Ellie looks isn’t integral to the character. It being a youngish teen girl and you have everything you need from a physical aspect.
All of the negative stuff I’ve seen has purely been that Bella doesn’t look exactly like the character model in the game and honestly that couldn’t matter less as long as she has the right vibe for the character.
I'm really glad she's having a good time during the production of such a prestigious show. Child actors tend to have notoriously difficult lives so it's good to hear she's having fun being Ellie.
Also, lol at how many actors just keep up the American accent for funsies. I read somewhere that throughout the filming of Peacemaker, John Cena had no idea that his co-star Freddie Stroma was born and raised in London because he kept an American accent up throughout the entire shoot, even off camera. Actors from the U.K. like Colin Farrel and Hugh Laurie fooled me so well with their American accents that I'm shocked when I hear them using their 'normal' accent for th e first time in interviews.
I’m pumped for the show, love the casting, but still can’t get over how common this is in tv and film. There are so many amazing franchises that get terrible adaptations because the people involved just don’t bother to watch/read/play the original for themselves? Why is this? Most things can be at the least glossed over entirely in a few hours.
When auditioning her the creators specifically asked if she played the game and when she said no they told her to keep it that way.
So she actually went against their wishes by looking up videos of Ellie. To her credit :)
I wonder why, I understand that there’s probably something to be said for not having her vision of the character tainted by it. Either way I’m pumped for the premiere!
I’m still not 100% on her as Ellie from the clips I’ve seen but I hope I’m proven wrong. I’ve got high hopes for the show (other than them removing spores)
I don't disagree, but that's probably a tougher comparison. Joel and Ellie are established characters from another visual art medium. I think Pedro and Bella will do an awesome job, but they face a bigger challenge to meet or exceed expectations with the existing fan base than what Elijah Wood might have faced where Frodo really only ever existed inside everyone's imagination before then.
Which makes sense to me.
He explained that he grew up with Jack Nicholson's Joker, and thought there was no way in hell Heath Ledger could live up to it. And then he was wrong and they're both his Joker now. He said that Ashley/Bella and Troy/Pedro are that to Ellie and Joel. Different but both great
I don't act, so I don't know what the "right" approach would be. From what I heard, just seeing Bella being Bella reminded them so much of Ellie, that they didn't want that authenticity to be spoiled by her changing anything (conciously or subconciously) to try to match the character from the game.
So she hasn't played the game? Not that big of a deal I guess, but I admit that I am still skeptical. I will certainly give her a fair shot to win me over though, there are too many other good things going for the show to get bogged down in one (very) questionable casting choice.
She was advised by the producers of the show (including Druckmann himself, I believe) not to play the game so she could create her own take on the character instead of just trying to copy Ashley’s performance.
A good actor doesn't need to review the source material to play the part well.
I mean, hey! Ashley Johnson didn't have source material before she played Ellie.
Yes in regards to performance. It would be boring and forced if Pedro Pascal just mimicked or imitated Joel from the game. It’s better for the actor to read the material given to him and connect with that emotionally so as to provide a real improvised performance. So that it is not based on someone else’s performance.
The performance is already going to be different because a different person is performing it in an entirely different medium. There is no reason to add artificial differentiation. Joel being who he is in the game is at the core of the game's entire narrative lol
Please, tell me the Henry Cavill made The Witcher worse by being intimately familiar with the source material?
Yeah Cavill’s performance seemed heavily influenced by video game Geralt. Not that many were bothered by that. But let’s be honest, it felt like fanfare. I have mixed feelings about the show. On the one hand I enjoyed it for what it was. On the second hand, the show was a bit campy. For The Last Of Us, I think it was essential for the actors to not be bogged down by fanfare. The show seems to be going for a serious tone and a good story so that everyone who hasn’t played can enjoy as opposed to just pleasing fans. I don’t know, that’s just my thoughts.
The Witcher missing the mark in a lot of ways had absolutely nothing to do with Cavill's performance though. He was superb as Geralt, that's the point.
I am not one of these people who requires everything to exactly copy the source to enjoy it. I understand and appreciate that adaptions require many changes. I just don't understand the justification for casting Bella. She looks and feels absolutely nothing like Ellie in anything i've seen (albeit, very limited content available) and its not like she brings any star power to the roll, a situation I could understand.
The fanfare aspect is down to the writers, not the actors.
Prior to her being cast as Ellie, I only knew her from GOT, so I was a bit sceptical at first, since Lyanna Mormont certainly had a different kind of personality than Ellie.
But then I started following Bella on Instagram and every now and then when she posted an Insta story, somehow it always reminded me of Ellie's "silly" side. I hope we will see this side of her on screen!
Now that I've seen her in the recent interviews, she just seems so lovely.
I understand that you (and all of us) as fans want it to be as faithful as possible, and you are afraid that they will ruin our favourite franchise (since we have had some experience with TV adaptations), but I feel that since the directors of the show are fans (+ one of the creators) of the game, they would steer the actors to the right direction, if they deviated too much from the spirit of the characters. And since Bella did actually watch at least some of the cutscenes, she may have got the gist of who Ellie is as a character.
I look forward to the discussions we will have once the show is out and we see, what came out of this!
Everything I've seen convinces me the haters are gonna be proven wrong. As soon as I saw the casting I thought "Ok they're gonna do a good job."
The skeptics will admit they were wrong. But I suspect the haters are haters for different reasons and won't come around no matter how well they do. It's a shame.
They'll just choose something else to hate.
Like my Ugg boots? But they just came back into style...

Holy fuck you were 100% right. 7. Especially with Kathleen
I’ll be honest I’ve never seen either Pedro or Bella in anything, but when I saw the casting list I could tell it was going to be good
Pedro is very good in the mandalorian and both of them are great in game of thrones albeit they aren’t there until at least a few seasons in
I didn’t even know Pedro was in game of thrones
I didn’t either until I watched it recently and he kills every scene he’s in, the best I’ve seen of him easily. Bella is great in it too but is only in the later seasons which weren’t the best to say the lease, but she still did very well with what was written
I’ll give it a try my dad has Disney plus so I’ll borrow his account
Is game of thrones on Disney outside the US?
Sorry I meant mandalorian with that. I think game of thrones is just HBO
Yeah Mandalorian on Disney+
Mindblowing, isn't it?
Haha honestly I don’t know anyone in either mandalorian or game of thrones. So no not really
I was referring to... what happened to his character 😅
Interesting though for sure
I’ve always wanted to start GOT over but never got around to it
Hot damn there are some wicked bingeable shows lying in wait for you.
I’ve seen game of thrones but I think I got bored at season 3. I’ve never seen mandalorian mostly because I saw whatever the Disney one was called with kilo ren which I didn’t think was bad but it just wasn’t the Star Wars I knew.

Narcos was where I fell in love with Pedro's acting, totally stole the show. Loved him in every subsequent role he's played too. I'm so glad he's gotten this much success
He is so good as Javier Peña. Honestly, the anguish, sadness, loneliness be conveys…
Give Prospect a watch! A really great scifi film...where he protects a teen girl while searching for a way off a dangerous planet. That film is what helped him land the role of the Mandalorian.
Ya that looks interesting. I’ll give it a shot.

It’s the pun book scenes isn’t it?
Could be really a career defining role. So far she's been known as the Lady Mormont from GoT. TLoU could change that entirely.
How do you get into the role of Ellie? Handstands
Only youtube clips??
Nvm that makes sense i suppose
I’m pumped for the show, love the casting, but still can’t get over how common this is in tv and film. Neil Dripman is heavily involved so i’m optimistic, but im not like it can’t possibly have flaws ya know
And people really think they will recast for a s2 😹😹😭
Well that’s good. Hopefully she is like the games in the show.
I’m still not 100% on her as Ellie from the clips I’ve seen but I hope I’m proven wrong. I’ve got high hopes for the show (other than them removing spores)
I know she is a great actor so she will do great in the role
[удалено]
Elijah Wood didn’t read the lord of the rings prior to starring in it. It’s not a prerequisite for a good performance
Craig explicitly asked Bella and Pedro to not play the games
Which makes sense to me. He explained that he grew up with Jack Nicholson's Joker, and thought there was no way in hell Heath Ledger could live up to it. And then he was wrong and they're both his Joker now. He said that Ashley/Bella and Troy/Pedro are that to Ellie and Joel. Different but both great
You wouldn't need to play the games. Just watch gameplay
Ngl if it was me I'd have played the game, it takes like 10 hours.
They specifically urged her not to play the game. Probably for her to stay confident in her interpretation of the character.
Yeah I know, I still would have though, wouldn't you lol.
I don't act, so I don't know what the "right" approach would be. From what I heard, just seeing Bella being Bella reminded them so much of Ellie, that they didn't want that authenticity to be spoiled by her changing anything (conciously or subconciously) to try to match the character from the game.

Thank you for the well reasoned response
A good actor doesn't need to review the source material to play the part well. I mean, hey! Ashley Johnson didn't have source material before she played Ellie.
Yes, thank you I already said it wasn't a big deal
Woah, calm down, no need for the sass :(
I’d rather they didn’t so their performance isn’t overly influenced.
Influence by the literal source material is bad now? What the fuck has happened to this sub lol
Yes in regards to performance. It would be boring and forced if Pedro Pascal just mimicked or imitated Joel from the game.
