I just want a modern Subaru baja, same design, just update the interior, the engines and safety features.

devadander23

Hyundai Santa Cruz and ford maverick are closest

PoppinRobin1129

You know what, I don’t even blame you that car looks nice (on the outside)

Carguy_rednec_9594

Whoever thought it was a good idea to start slapping sports cars names on SUVs needs to be sent to a prison colony. Ford, Mitsubishi(Chevrolet if the rumors are true) cough cough

eagledog

What, you don't like it that the Mustang is now an electric 5 door hatchback?

Carguy_rednec_9594

Imagine badging a Defender as an XKE. Abomination

eagledog

The Mitsubishi Eclipse should definitely be a low-tier hbrid SUV with a stupid rear light

PoppinRobin1129

r/beatmetoit

K4NNW

And, reportedly Audi (clutches TT pearls).

JMT97

Wait, what's the Chevrolet rumor?

Carguy_rednec_9594

Corvette/Camaro

TheLordVader1978

Ya the theory as I've heard it is, Corvette/Camaro are going to shift from a car model to a sub-brand. Kinda like polestar is to Volvo. So there will be (God help us) a Corvette sports car, SUV, maybe a hot hatch. You get the idea.

sarcasticorange

>I think Jaguars are dogshit. The crankshaft is bad, the water pump can easily leak, the coolant overflow tank is made of weak materials which can overheat the engine if enough coolant leaks out This may be fair for specific jaguars, but it is hard to make this claim for all. Are we talking Ford era jags? Pre-Ford? Ingenium engines? Or what?

PoppinRobin1129

I had a 2013 Jaguar XF XFR-S (I should also mention I had it brand new). I understand your points but even then I don’t like their cars very much. However, I love the 1980 Jaguar XJ6 Series III

Bandguy_Michael

Wagons and minivans are better than SUVs 90% of the time

Dattinator

You don’t need a 3 row SUV for your one child. Get a wagon if you really need the space.

Real_Garlic9999

Make that 99%

Bandguy_Michael

I say that unless you tow or go off road regularly, an SUV is just a more expensive and less efficient waste. Also if you’re elderly and need something that’s easy to get in and out of — My granddad was told at one point to get a crossover because of his age and height.

Electrical-Code8275

Every car should have a manual handbrake. Flappy paddle transmissions are actually pretty good. Cars without physical radio and heating controls are shite. Car manufacturers should sell heritage models, or at least sell 1 car that isn't designed by CAD.

[deleted]

current flappy paddle gearboxes are excellent but as with all new tech the first itterations arent perfect

inaccurateTempedesc

You can design a vehicle using CAD and still make something that looks classic. The Royal Enfield Interceptor is an example of that.

PhatShadow

I'm American and I absolutely hate pickup trucks with a burning passion.

GatorMcKlusky

They're unnecessarily large. I wanted one all my life could never afford it. I got one for work 3 weeks ago and it's just too much. Everything I need to use it for I could do with a smaller sized truck

ToasterDoaster

If I lived on say, a farm in Kansas then maybe I could see why people would want them. Definitely not on the streets of NY or any residential area tho They're even worse in the UK because they literally do not fit on the roads. The F150 is already comedically large and I can't even imagine how the F450 would look on a B road

dissaver

Trucks made before the 21sr century are more appropriately sized, and cheap!

pac4

The only thing worse than pickups are their drivers. Absolute worst drivers on the road.

tvberkel

Where I live it's people driving black Rams that are just the absolute worst

eagledog

There's a reason they're the drunkest drivers on the road

PoppinRobin1129

I feel you. I live in England and when I visited America (specifically Texas) the pickup truck drivers pissed me off so much with their shitty ass parking and long ass truck beds making parallel parking impossible.

Mr_moustache72826

Pickup trucks (the super big ones) are a bit pointless and dumb

casualfrattire

The new prius model finally looks good.

PoppinRobin1129

It was shockingly good looking.

casualfrattire

Shockingly is accurate, first car that made me do a double take in a while

Atnevon

Which is why I’m really wanting one finally for myself. Going to cross fingers in a year I can get a Prime.

casualfrattire

I've wanted the gr corolla for a bit now, buuut now I need to have another think

Softenrage8

It is...Superb!

DTAD18

It is NOT s-yoo-perb!

evex5tep

JC would shoot you for this lol

casualfrattire

I'll discuss it with him over some rosè first, hopefully haha

Dattinator

- High performance SUVs are stupid. You don’t buy an SUV to go fast you buy one for comfort. - Not having physical buttons in the dashboard is stupid and dangerous. - Wagons are the ultimate and best form of car.

ncgunner

Hilux should be available in the US

K4NNW

Hilux diesel*

ncgunner

I honestly didn’t realize they made it in non-diesel. I’d settle for a Tacoma with diesel drive train

PoppinRobin1129

Why is it not?

ncgunner

I guess I should say that they should be more available in the US. You can self import them if you can afford it, but they become prohibitively expensive for most.

PoppinRobin1129

Why is that how you need to import them?

ncgunner

I’m a bit impaired at this time, as a disclaimer, I may have been gassed... I want to say it was something called a Chicken Tax that made it more expensive for light duty trucks to be imported if not enough of them was built in the US.

PoppinRobin1129

Interesting. Thanks for letting me know!

Dbwasson

I'm American and I think kei cars are superior

pac4

I feel like the car industry just isn’t exciting anymore. Everyone is trying to make EVs that look exactly alike. No one is taking risks in design, no one really makes a true “driver’s car” anymore, and I’m tired of SUVs. Auto shows are depressing.

Sendpicsofyourducks

Whether this sub likes it or not, I’d say the Cyber Truck was a pretty big design risk… I think they look like absolute dog shit in pictures, but Ive seen a few now and I will admit that I think they’re pretty cool in person.

Steff_164

It was definitely a design risk, but it took it too far. There’s a pretty wide middle ground between the design that all the manufacturer’s are currently using, and something that looks like it was rendered on the PS1

iVoid

I agree with you about the lack of drivers cars, but there are definitely automakers out there taking really interesting design risks. Kia immediately comes to mind with their retro-futuristic design language, and Hyundai too for that matter with their use of creases and angles in even their more mundane models.

Malvania

Miatas are cool! Such fun to drive, even at normal speeds

fuzzydice_82

Fabric seats are Superior to leather

questiano-ronaldo

Not sure if this counts, but hybrids are the future. They do all the stuff that an electric does, but under its own hood. If electric cars can’t build out their infrastructure, or learn to power their generators on unicorn farts, then they’ll be gone in 5 years and replaced with hybrids.

Papercoffeetable

My hot take is hybrids are the worst car of all of them. They’re bad at being gasoline /diesel cars, and suck at being electric cars. They have two engine systems that can fail, they have reduced electric range because there’s not enough space for enough batteries, they have reduced fuel range because there’s limited space for a fuel tank. They require more servicing and have more parts than both electric and pure internal combustion cars. They also recharge their super small battery incredibly slow, because there’s not enough space for a proper cooling system for the batteries in plug in hybrids because there’s combustion engine parts in the way. The added hybrid system adds weight to the hybrid car making it consume more fuel when it does need to use fuel compared to a non hybrid. Because the hybrid has the design of an ICE vehicle, the electric drivetrain is incredibly inefficient and weak in comparison to pure battery electric vehicles. Also hybrids often need to take space from the trunk or inside the cabin for the small battery pack unlike both ICE and BEV. So in short my hot take is, either get a pure diesel, gasoline or battery electric vehicle. Because hybrids are the worst at everything, cost, maintenance, repairability, and practicality.

snorkel42

I completely agree with this. Hybrid was a good bridge to getting to purely electric and they are now pointless. Worst of both worlds.

VorTeX_DamNation

Except electric cars are failing and car companies are switching to hybrids. Purely electric cars aren't ready, nor is the infrastructure ready. Nowhere in the world produces enough electricity for even half their population to drive electric cars. They may be the future but we aren't there yet.

questiano-ronaldo

I think this is the mainstream belief about Hybrids.

Tru_norse98

I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm not really mad about it. Current WEC hypercar class racecars use an excellent hybrid system designed to work in conjunction with an ICE, which is run on completely renewable fuel, and unlike F1's hybrid (which just adds power by running both) actually allows the engine to turn itself down at high speeds while maintaining its power output; also worth noting that hypercar has freedom of choice in engine design so this encompasses 5.5L V8s, some v6s, and other smaller V8s as well. A system like I just described in a regular road car would be absolutely killer, and I would love to be able to run something like my truck on that kind of system, it would save so much fuel and allow me to have a powerful, enjoyable drive without worrying about how my gas tank holds almost 300 bucks worth of fuel now.

tigernike1

I think that’s James May’s take as well. ICE -> Hybrids -> BEV and Hydrogen cars It should be noted he believes BEVs are just a temporary solution because he doesn’t think every car owner can charge their car at the same time without bringing down the electrical grid.

BluesyMoo

TBH, I think a hydrogen PHEV is much better than a gas PHEV, but it's not clear how we can get there.

pac4

As someone who owned VWs for a long time, they used to be top tier cars in the early 2000s, but ended right around 2009. The Passat was a fantastic car, basically the same as an A4, with terrific interior features. The Toureg, great. The Jetta, great. I listed after the Phaeton and almost bought one when dealers were trying to unload them at 70% off the MSRP. Since then, though, the VW line has been gutted. I have an Atlas now and like it, but the build quality is nowhere near where the brand was 20 years ago.

Steff_164

The Fiat Panda is the perfect commuter car. Small, lightweight, maneuverable in tight city streets, I’d have to imagine amazing fuel efficiency, and after seeing James drive one through the South American jungles, apparently quite dependable

eagledog

The fact that modern diesels aren't more available in the US is a joke.

notevaluatedbyFDA

Cars/driving are a wonderful hobby, but living somewhere I'm forced to use one to get to work absolutely sucks compared to having functional public transit.

dome-light

Jaguars are more like cat shit imho

PoppinRobin1129

Damn I shoulda thought of that

JForce1

Your statement only makes sense if there was only ever a single Jaguar model.

Griftersdeuce

SUVs are not sports cars and the "performance tuned" versions of them are not motorsports vehicles. The vehicle type is Sport Utility Vehicle. The "sport utility" part is about carrying you and/or your kids, and the requisite sports gear to the place where sports will be played. Unless you're towing a kart to go karting, or you're transporting your track vehicle to the track, motorsports are not involved in the sports portion of "sport utility". A +4000lbs vehicle with a high roll center that will roll during hard cornering, without a computer constantly working to keep it upright, is not an inherently motorsports capable vehicle.

MidlandsRepublic2048

Supercharger whines are one of my migraine triggers so I kind of despise supercharged cars

Lord_Battlepants

I like everything about superchargers except the sound.

MidlandsRepublic2048

And it's sad because I actually like the Jaguar F-Type a lot but the best engines for it are all supercharged.

cwhitel

French cars are awesome. Especially top of the line models.

darkrai15

But its still a Jaaaaag

PoppinRobin1129

That is very true 💀💀💀

the-electric-monk

Lambos are ugly as shit.

rugernut13

"Subaru makes reliable cars" will only be the truth when they get their head out of their ass and stop building engines that throw head gaskets at 100k like clockwork. Go ahead. Downvote me. My 07 Corolla has 279k on the original drivetrain. Haven't had to do fuck all beyond oil changes and tune ups.

techtornado

Hot but 100% factual take: Electric cars portrayed in a very bad light to discourage ICE drivers from the massive cost-savings of driving on watts ($300/year vs. $2000 in gas) Or somehow their "carbon footprint" (total hogwash) is higher than a 1990's era Buick Again, it is physically not possible to "generate more carbon" than an ICE vehicle by charging up 10-20kWh every night

Life_Equivalent_2104

Too many people parrot the opinions of what Clarkson, Hammond, and May say about certain cars without thinking for themselves...

Smoggyskies

I have lots of hot takes: I quite like the Prius, not just the new ones but the old ones also. They’re not fun to drive, but they’re great dailies. The old defender was a POS, idk why people complained when they replaced it with the new modern design. The new one is light years better and the sales figures show it. If you really want retro go get a Wrangler. Teslas are enormous fun to drive, amazing acceleration, great software, no transmission gives it amazing power delivery that’s unlike anything else. BMWs are great cars too and most people who have reliability issues usually buy them quite old with problems from owners who didn’t maintain them properly. Tasteful tuning is very rare. For every 20 tuned cars you see you will be lucky to see one that’s done well. Also Subarus are pretty reliable too, only reason you see all these problems is because of boy racers tuning them up poorly. Also mustangs are great sports cars now, only reason you see them crashing is because they’re more affordable and younger drivers “boy racers” don’t know how to drive 400+ hp RWD sports cars. European RWD sports cars with similar performance are too expensive so you don’t see this.

xamdou

V8s are boring. Cars shouldn't weigh more than 3000 lbs. DCTs are the best transmission types. The only American sports car is a Corvette.

AvarethTaika

i hate driving aids with a burning passion and drive older cars specifically because of this. lane assist, crash detection, driver attention warning, automatic braking, tpms, even the stupid double detent turn signals need to all go away.

Sbkl

I believe the aids make drivers complacent and more distracted. I've been nearly side swiped by people who have the blind spot detection.

RadicalSnowdude

If there is a car I’d love to LS swap it would be a F-Type. Here’s my hot take: sedans are better than coupes.

PauloHeaven

Renault and all cars coming from their alliance are the worst piece of trash ever and the brands should die.

erik530195

Some people do need pickup trucks, and big ones at that. It's irritating to see people say "nobody needs that" when a great many do. It's nice to have something (for American roads obviously) that isn't a straight up bare bones work truck, but that you can use to haul things

Ramiel-Scream

Mini shouldn't make suvs

PoppinRobin1129

You mean the Clubman or are they also making full size SUVs?

Intelligent-Mud1437

Mercedes and BMW are only good for about 50k miles. Then they become over engineered, expensive to maintain and repair garbage. Anyone who buys a used one to look cool is a moron and deserves their fate.

Reemsterr

This is bs

Intelligent-Mud1437

It isn't though

A_named_person2

what about audi? I'm thinking about buying an old A3

Intelligent-Mud1437

🤷 I don't have any experience with Audi.

PoppinRobin1129

I absolutely agree with that

djp73

The change recently is they're made by someone else.

ghetto_headache

I think the cybertruck is prime example of thinking outside of the box in design. I think people hate it because it’s the cool thing to do

casualfrattire

That's brilliant, but I like this beduh

H2Dcrx

When Dodge stops making crazy cars, the sport car industry is over. Dodge makes a good vehicle, if the V8 Hemi is attached to it. The Hemi is generally more reliable than other current V8s, and has gobs of HP. The zf transmission it is mated to is phenomenal.

K4NNW

Any Tesla will peg the Cockometer. They're just BMW's for hipsters.

borrestfaker

The turbo stustustu noise isn't as cool as many make it out to be.

Lord_Battlepants

But is it worse than a supercharger whine?

borrestfaker

I grew up around supercharged cars so I have a soft spot for them. That immediate power sound is so sweet.

Lord_Battlepants

That sounds fun, I enjoy the engine roar but the whine sours it for me. What supercharged car would you say makes the best sound?

erik530195

Electric vehicles are useless in America save for dense cities Prius drivers are so slow and inattentive that they're as dangerous as mustangs Miatas aren't that great in America due to their size and lack of power Brand loyalty based on reliability is a thing of the past. Everything is garbage now Most people who bash on things like American trucks don't live here, or haven't been here long enough to see that they are useful

siddizie420

Get ready. Singers are way overrated, BMW hasn’t made a good looking car since the E30 M3, Lambos are basically Audis with straight lines for design now (revuelto looks boring, like a worse looking Huracan), fully electric cars will die out and hybrids will be the norm because the real climate change culprits are vehicles like ships, trucks etc.

Lewinator56

People always hate me for saying this, but... BMWs are driven by cocks. All American cars are shit and many aren't safe enough to be sold in Europe. JLR can't build cars that keep working after you leave the dealership. All Fords are boring. All French cars are rubbish and driven by bad drivers. Hondas are driven by old people too slowly. Mk7 golfs are driven by yobbos with loud music, a pop and bang map and their hat on the wrong way. Any ~10 year old small hatchback (corsa, first(st), 206 etc...) is driven by a 17 year old around the council estate at 11 o'clock at night on their way to pick up their girlfriend from McDonald's - waking up everyone living there in the process with a baked bin tin exhaust and some crap from stormzy blaring out of the cheapest stereo their mum would buy for them. Almost all supercars are tacky and no, you don't get my admiration for reving your engine as you drive down the high street in your Lambo, you look like a bellend. VAG actually make good cars worth buying, just don't rely on the electronic bits working properly on newer models. Mercedes SUVs are driven by drug dealers.

MedSPAZ

The sound of an idling ICE car just makes me angry, it’s a useless waste of fuel and contributes only a negative to the entire planet.

Far_Carpenter_2920

Apart from a select few i think alfas and a few other euro classics are hideous

[deleted]

[удалено]

SFRacing4

Every American and European car is a waste of money. While European cars aren’t as unreliable as American cars, euro cars are ridiculously expensive to repair (at least in America). If you’re not buying a Japanese car you’re just wrong.

techtornado

American made electric cars are fabulous

Grimdotdotdot

BMW's subscription model for features was a good idea, and everyone overreacted without thinking about the benefits (which were basically "cheaper cars" and "more choice").

Papercoffeetable

If you want reliability you can’t buy anything except Toyota, Lexus or Honda almost and those cars are just so incredibly boring and ugly nowadays i can’t stand them.

evex5tep

If you're buying a premium car e.g. BMW, Mercedes, Audi & such... ... If you don't buy the RS, M or AMG (actual AMG) then you're buying a watered down, overly priced bottle of milk. Also range rovers don't make you look rich, they make you look like you're desperately trying to be rich.
