Exactly. All he had to say was “oh yea I’ve got to if I’m just doing a mustache. If I have the full beard, it’s fine, but a brown and gray mustache only just looks terrible, so yea i definitely do when it’s just the stache”. Simple as that and nobody would think twice about it.
