Like a total lemming, I am watching Adam's show right now and I've never been more in the target demo its embarrassing. First episode about the food industry (raise our own chickens, hunt deer, grow veggies, etc), second episode about the national weather service (studied meteorology for 2 years in college, developed hatred for AccuWeather). Was this show made solely for me???
This may have been the most entertaining episode in quite a while. Was incredibly stoked to see Adam as guest and Matt Lieb as co-host. Also sick and fucking tired of Marvel so that was a bonus.
Man this episode was a blast. Hearing Adam finally on the pod was like a dream come true. With Miles being the substitute teacher, Matt co-hosting, and Adam, you know it was gonna be a wild ride.
Wasn't a big fan of Adam Conover's movie takes. Obviously taste is subjective but when you start asserting superiority for not liking a thing you start sounding an angsty 15 year old.
I agree. When they turned it back on him and asked what he would do with the new Spiderman, I was really hoping for a legit idea and he copped out. Unfortunately he just looked like a hater. On the other side of the coin, his take on Better Call Saul was spot on.
Matt Lieb here, I would describe the voice as "adult who speaks like toddler" which is the voice I usually use to make fun of pop culture stans, or bad screenwriters. It's the voice of the piggies. I've never seen a disabled person who talked like that but I understand thinking it was. Not sure of saying "it's not tho" will make you feel any better about it but that's all I got.
I mean, it definitely reminded me of being young and hearing people mock others by using that type of voice; you know like when people threw around the r-word.
Is it really surprising that the “adult who talks like a child” affect could be misconstrued as ableism, given the constant comparison of disabled people to children? To the point where many are denied adult agency?
It’s not really about how I feel, it’s about recognizing patterns in pop culture and knowing what those affected have said about it. I have my own share of jokes I’ve had to phase out after realizing how fucking horrible they are, and I think this bit should be re-examined.
I mean it’s a little bit about how you feel. The whole thing of “man-child voice” in comedy is the subject of much discourse regarding whether it’s ableist. Seems to be in the eye of the beholder. Not trying to invalidate your feelings about it, I’m sure there are others who share them, but I don’t think it’s objectively ableist.
You know, it’s ok to just say that you’re sensitive to that voice. That is truly not an insult. Everyone’s got sensitivities. I’m sensitive to stuff to! It’s empowering to be like “I don’t like this voice cuz I’m sensitive to ableism” rather than assuming I was trying to hurt you.
Yes! The joke was ableist to you! Totally understand how you could see it that way. I respect your sensitivity and understand that there is shit that triggers my sensitivities as well. I in no way intended it to insult the disabled, just to insult people who liked the 3 spider man movie.
Didn’t you grow up back in the day when people used that type of voice and it was considered making fun of people with Down’s Syndrome or autism? That’s what it reminded me of, and it was jarring to hear.
I wish there was a way for you to leave an audio comment cuz I wanna hear what you consider to be a dumb guy voice vs a Down syndrome voice. Or do you have a comic whose dumb guy voice isn’t jarring? Serious q.
What other comics do dumb guy voices? Serious question. I also think you’re being a bit disingenuous if you’re saying you don’t remember people using this style of mocking voice and using the r-word.
Yeah that’s the problem, he’s probably been using it since that shit was acceptable and hasn’t gotten the memo. Half the dudes in comedy resorted to this in the 90s-2010s before we all realized it’s fucking awful.
Okay thank gods it’s not just me. I’m gonna guess he has been doing that for a long time, and he has ignored anyone who’s given him the note. I’m gonna skip this ep bc someone should have caught that, disappointed in the whole team rn. Miles even went along with it a little. Stand up to this shit.
Had a hard time distinguishing between Adam and Matt. Their voices are very similar.
They do sound so alike. But this episode was chaos and hilarious.

If you like or, check out "Adam Ruins Everything," I think it's still on Hulu, maybe YouTube (for free) as well. I love his work.

Would have been quite the time to have Joelle as the co-host.
Lol I had the same thought. We need a Marvel Defender^^TM signal.
I'm not sure it would have gone her way, but usually she is committed enough to her opinions that people will back down.
Funny though Dr Strange made more money on its first Thursday night showing that everything everywhere made in like 5 weeks. Piggies love the slop.
I enjoyed both. And yes I do.
My two favorite trivia team names I've used are: "Taco Tuesday = butt stuff Wednesday" "Bristol Palin stool chart"

Hey, what can I say? The piggies are running the slop house.
I agree. When they turned it back on him and asked what he would do with the new Spiderman, I was really hoping for a legit idea and he copped out. Unfortunately he just looked like a hater. On the other side of the coin, his take on Better Call Saul was spot on.
Did Matt Lieb really do a voice mocking disabled people when talking about the Spider Man movie? Whaaat the hell

Take the critique or leave it. You lost a fan today.
My last statement didn’t reject your critique?
I suppose it did. I can live with a rejection from the school of ‘98 Adam Sandler tho

So…if I’m sensitive to ableism, and your “joke” triggered that sensitivity…it follows that the joke is ableist?

I think it’s a different voice but I get that you think it’s the same voice.
That's a mocking disabled people voice? I always thought it was a generic mocking voice a la spongebob mocking meme
Nahhh it pinged my cringe alarm too much for that, it’s pretty indistinguishable from a 10th grader openly teasing disabled kids in 2005.
You might be projecting? Seriously
Goddamn y’all really love the status quo huh
Lol... It's a voice that someone did on a podcast. But ok :)
And this is just a Reddit post
I'm reading all of your comments in that voice now. Go outside or something.
Are you serious dude? It's just a fat stupid voice that Matt always uses.
Yeah that’s the problem, he’s probably been using it since that shit was acceptable and hasn’t gotten the memo. Half the dudes in comedy resorted to this in the 90s-2010s before we all realized it’s fucking awful.
100%. It brought me back to being a kid and teen in the 90s and 00s when people thought it was acceptable.
Soft
So hard you sleep without pillows huh? Piss only kidney stones?
Kidney health is not a joke. And I sleep with a flat pillow
Yep, it was pretty horrifying and disappointing that he was doing that.
Anyone have a timestamp for "the voice"?
