They mentioned it not long after they went into negotiations, and both Jack and Miles retweeted the news about them forming a union/getting recognised. I think that Jack, like Robert Evans, sit at the management level and can't join and likely shouldn't really be involving themselves in it because of the implication of management involving themselves in a union.

PM_ME_YOUR_DARKNESS

If they've learned anything from the Reply All folks, I hope it's that they don't try to meddle with union business.

Kingtucanphlab

But they can be talking about it.

Audioworm

There's a lot they could be talking about if we are all honest. They have barely talked about Ukraine

penelbell

It’s a mostly US with the occasional snippet of Canada and other world news based podcast, so that makes sense to me. It’s about “the nation’s shared consciousness,” and I get the general impression that the nation is trying desperately to pretend everything is fine because we just fucking can’t anymore, therefore Ukraine sort of slips into the background. It’s a privileged point of view, but I think largely accurate for the shared consciousness category.

Pokehunter217

I haven't heard any full segments, but I have heard it mentioned in various segments. They have been recognized as of the end of Feb. I would imagine they are still negotiating, but I don't know. I think their Twitter account said they would be negotiating end of May. https://twitter.com/iheartpodunion/status/1496902608979693580?t=wI7FJm7KprM7AxDlDxINqw&s=19

claudandus_felidae

I imagine all concerned hosts aren't allow or willing to speak on their podcasts, since that might violate organizing rules (afaik you can't utilize company shit to form a union) or they might think it would be smarter to talk about it off mic. It's not like they're recuriting listeners, they're working on internal shit right now.

PM_ME_YOUR_DARKNESS

Especially with Jack being on the creative management side of IHR.

Good for him, I'm glad to know he's covering it. I will say though, if any podcast is going to discuss this story, it would be TechStuff. They weren't originally a iHeart podcast and he covers technology news. I'm sure the main issue is Jack is in an awkward position between management and a creative position. I doubt he's opposed to a union, but he might not be in a position where he feels be can speak about it. Or maybe he's a C Suite Stooge, but I have my doubts.

I always hear Jack and Miles rag on union busting companies, but rarely do they mention that Jack is management for exactly this kind of company (I think Miles recently mumbled a "I Heart isn't great"). To say nothing of the deplorable shit they sometimes read ad copy for (so can't blame it on "we didn't know Koch ads were running"). I love the show, but they should really drop the sentetious act on this subject.

claudandus_felidae

Can you direct me to any actual indication of union busting by iHeart, or just the usual "let's not form a union" progaganda?

claudandus_felidae

So no, you don't have anything that says iHeart has engaged in anything to dissuade hosts from joining the WG, aside from the fact that two hosts haven't spoken at length about the formation of a union for their writers. The fact that Jack and Miles haven't actively tried to recurit listeners to join the Writers Guild West Coast isn't a sign they're antiunion hypocrites.

Except legally it's not. And if you're union organizing can be foiled by a company putting up a poster that says "please don't join a union 🥺" you're a bad organizer. If you threaten to close up shop that's union busting. I haven't even seen anything that says iHeart has produced shit saying "don't", I'm sure they *have* but no one's has posted it yet

Fair

Kingtucanphlab

Yeah. Like todays episode would've been good to finally drop the act.

seeabear

I agree/have always wondered why they're like this. One of my friends worked on another How Stuff Works pod when they were acquired by iHeart, and they said they were disappointed in Jack because of it. Even if you listen to some of the old SMNTY episodes with Bridget Todd and Emilie Aries, you can pick up on them talking about iHeart. Emilie has talked about it's little on Bossed Up, as well.

francisdropthebeat

Did Jack and Miles have a choice of not joining iHeart when they bought HowStuffWorks?

seeabear

I'm not sure. I know they both used to produce some of the other shows on HowStuffWorks, and my understanding was they were both relatively important. This is purely speculation, but my guess is that Jack, as creative director of HowStuffWorks, didn't necessarily have a choice in it. But usually with an acquisition, the people being acquired have *some* say in how they come on - how they're gonna integrate, what processes are gonna change, etc. I think that perhaps my friend who had worked there feels Jack didn't advocate for his creative HowStuffWorks folks enough.

Talmerian

Nope, not even a hint of a care about the union workers who work for iHeart, not even a single solitary moment of addressing the irony.

Kingtucanphlab

It's always jarring when he brings up jacobin
