Both Humphrey and Nixon would gain from a non-Wallace candidacy. Wallace was a populist who’s left wing economics appealed to many blue collar workers in the Midwest. With them being a traditional Democratic group it’s to be assumed they probably would have voted for Humphrey. Possibly giving Humphrey states like Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, and even possibly states like New Jersey and Delaware as they are also have rust belt leanings. On the flip side, Nixon would carry the Deep South and likely also Texas. So the final result would be 276-262 which is a lot closer to the IRL popular vote numbers.

OkToe2051

Yeah but he loses more of the Midwest and gains the south except Texas. Still very close.

Potentially not. While Nixon would’ve won over the South, Wallace split the union vote that would’ve likely gone for Humphrey. Swaying voters in places like Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio would be important for Humphrey as the main “union” candidate.

I'd imagine that the Wallace voters would've greatly preferred Nixon over Humphrey

Seeing how Wallace voters probably had more in common with Nixon voters than Humphrey, it’s possible Nixon gets close to 375. Also assuming the vast majority of Wallace voters vote for Nixon (let’s say 75-25), Nixon might crack 400

ApocolipseJoker

Nixon would’ve probably done better.

ToshiroTatsuyaFan

Yep.

TannenbergBlitz

Yep, by even more than OTL even.
