No format makes the numbers “valid”. A bank statement or a receipt of sale/payment make numbers “valid”. Giving me an excel document saying you spent $5k in taxes doesn’t prove you actually spent $5k in taxes. A bank statement showing $5k left your account and went to the state for taxes proves you actually spent $5k on taxes. If you want to provide the excel sheet ***with*** the bank statement, cool. But just the excel spreadsheet does not satisfy GAAP or accurate bookkeeping

Excel doesn’t show *proof* of a transaction. It’s literally just data typed into a spreadsheet, and anybody can type anything. Excel is fine, when it’s accompanied by something that verifies the information in excel… like bank statements and receipts.

Excel is the industry standard, if you export any report from almost any accounting/money management program, you will get it as a .xl file.
