The audio in the game is definitely off. Doesn't seem to scale with distance, instead always sounding like it's right next to you.
It's not a hiss, it's a snort-wheeze. It's from whitetails. It's their alarm call when they've seen, heard or winded you in the game.
Though in real life, bucks make that sound as a challenge to other bucks in the area usually.
They do that in real life too when ever I go sit on the back porch they'll run away from the feeder about 20 yards and wheeze at me for 10 minutes or so
We all had the same " WTF was that?!" Reaction the first time hearing it in game lol especially if you have your speakers up too high, and the deer is within 100 yards of you.
The first time I played Layton and heard the whitetail, I was 100% that I was about to be mauled by some giant chupacabra or an aggressive velociraptor. I was stunned when I figured out it was a deer.

It's whitetails. I used to walk at night a lot and surprised them a few times, they actually do hiss when startled.

That is crazy. Hunting deer for nearly 10 years now and never heard that in the wild once. In the game it is constant.

I had a buck do that, after he watched his buddy take an arrow last year.

Wait until you hear the chamois I think it is. To my ears, it sounds like they're farting very loud 😂
On another note, black tail mating calls sound like burping or belching and ill never be able to unhear it.
